Joy Division - 1976.
Inspired by a Sex Pistols gig at the Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall on July 20, 1976, Bernard Sumner (also credited as "Bernard Dicken", "Bernard Albrecht" and "Bernard Albrecht-Dicken") and Peter Hook formed a band with friend Terry Mason. Sumner bought a guitar, Hook purchased a bass, and Mason a drum kit. The band placed an advertisement in a Manchester record store and recruited Curtis as their singer. Curtis knew Sumner, Hook and Mason from previous gigs and was also in attendance at ...

| | | | Joy: Encyclopedia II - Joy Division - EquipmentJoy Division often experimented with different sounds, and Bernard Sumner was said to have been the main brain behind instrumental ideas and usage. He, for instance, instigated the use of synthesizers in Joy Division's music.
Synthesizers were used quite predominantly in Joy Division's music towards the end of their time together, with songs such as "Isolation", "Decades" and "The Eternal" from the Closer album featuring quite heavy electronic undertones. Interestingly, a rare Joy Division track entitled "As You Said" (sometime ...

| | | | Joy: Encyclopedia II - Bill Joy - SunIn 1983 he co-founded Sun Microsystems.
There is a story about him: DARPA had contracted BBN to add TCP/IP, devised by Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn, into Berkeley UNIX. Joy had been instructed to plug BBN's stack into Berkeley Unix. But Joy refused to do so. In his opinion, BBN's TCP/IP wasn't good enough. So he wrote his own high-performance TCP/IP stack.
As John Gage tells it, "BBN had a big contract to implement TCP/IP, but their stuff didn't work, and Joy's grad student stuff worked. So they had this big meeting and this grad s ...

| | | | | Joy: Encyclopedia II - Joy Electric - Pre-Joy Electric HistoryHaving experimented with live shows, formed countless after-school bands, and recorded an album that was never to be released, Ronnie and his brother Jason found their way onto Michael Knott’s fledgling label, Blonde Vinyl, with a dance album to produce.
After buying an old Akai sampler and a few synthesizers, Ronnie began crafting his own spin-off of current electronic "club" music. Still working with his brother Jason, Ronnie's new band, Dance House Children, posited cold, hypnotic electronica against quaint, old-fashioned lyrics. After producing two similar-sounding albums, Dance House Children ...

| | | | | Joy: Encyclopedia II - Joi Ito - BiographyIto was born in Kyoto, Japan, and moved to Michigan in the United States at the age of four with his family. At 14, he returned to Japan when his mother became President of the Japanese subsidiary of Energy Conversion Devices, Inc.
Ito returned to the U.S. to attend Tufts University near Boston as a computer science major, where he met, among others, Pierre Omidyar, later founder of eBay. Finding his course work too rigid and believing that "learning computer science in school was stupid", Ito dropped out of Tufts to later attend the ...

| | | | Joy: Encyclopedia II - Joy Division - Live performancesThe usual scene at a Joy Division gig was Curtis in the middle at the front, Sumner standing to Curtis' right, Hook standing to Curtis' left and Morris and his drum kit behind Curtis. The band usually played with little light, probably due to Curtis' epilepsy, which sometimes inhibited his performances. Curtis usually held onto the microphone stand for most of a song, only leaving it to dance. He sometimes walked off stage after he had finished his vocals, leaving the rest of the band ...

| | | | | Joy: Encyclopedia II - Joy Electric - The Volatile YearsDuring the process of writing his fourth album (originally intended as "Beautiful Dazzling Music No. 2", then "Fairy Tale Melodies" (some Tooth and Nail promotional material came out with this name), and then later to be renamed simply as "Melody"), Martin found the sound of his project changing radically. Of course, changes were quite evident during "Beautiful Dazzling Music", but this fourth album carried things to the extreme. Analog synths began to dominate the studio floor-space. Furthermore, Martin began perfecting a clock-like musical ...

| | | | Joy: Encyclopedia II - Joy Electric - The Legacy Series2001 saw the release of Legacy Volume 1: The White Songbook. A year and a half in the making, The White Songbook continued in the synthesized tradition of the past few albums (indeed, on the same semi-modular monosynth; a Roland System 100), but with many intricate and interwoven layers of sounds building on each other. The whole project had a very literary feel to it. The music was divided into four thematic chapters, and the very sparse artwork of the album was meant to invoke the sense of an old book. This album also brought the relativel ...
