Manson himself was involved in the production of several music albums including his Lie: The Love & Terror Cult (Performance 1970). He later visited Manson in jail in the late 1980s and caused a stir when he was searched on one such visit and was found to be in possession of a single gun bullet, although he cl ...

Joni Mitchell: Encyclopedia II - Music history of the United States 1980s to the present - 1980s

The American music industry of the very early 1980s was in a state of flux, which Reebee Garofolo claims reflects the state of American society, in turmoil with the election of Ronald Reagan (p. 353). Disco, the most popular style of the late 1970s, was dead, and the once vibrant field of punk rock was fractured, producing offshoots like New Wave music. The term New Wave was used very loosely, describing a vast range of styles from the arty punk of Elvis Costello to the Talking Heads and the New Romantics; this vagueness temporarily t ...

Joni Mitchell: Encyclopedia II - EMOTIVe - Tracklist

"Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums" was originally perceived to be a remix of the song "Pet" from Thirteenth Step. Maynard James Keenan spoke about this song on aMOTION and insists that it is not a remix, but rather a second part of "Pet". The track "Passive" is actually a remake of a song created by Keenan, Trent Reznor, et al for the Tapeworm project which never saw the light of day. Note: This album has been released with the Copy Control protection system in some regions.

Joni Mitchell: Encyclopedia II - Freak scene - Hair and clothes

The hairstyles were mostly long and unkempt but people were experimenting with other possibilities. Rock stars of the era such as David Bowie and Roxy Music were trying shorter styles and hair dye. Roy Wood of the pop group Wizzard had hair down to his knees with odd colours dyed in. These musical icons were influential. Shaven heads were seen occasionally but were not yet as common as they would become when punk began. There was a reluctance to make hair too short for fear of looking like skinheads (who at that time were still thought ...

Joni Mitchell: Encyclopedia II - Boards of Canada - Early Boards of Canada 1970s-1995

Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin experimented with creating music together through their teens. Growing up in musical families, they began playing instruments at a young age, and experimenting with recording techniques at around 10-years-old. Using tape machines they experimented with laying cut-up samples of found sounds over compositions of their own. Although they had made music together as children, "Boards of Canada" did not exist until much later. The band would have a nebulous roster throughout its history, encompassing at least f ...

Joni Mitchell: Encyclopedia II - Neil Young - Early years

Young was born in Toronto; his father was sportswriter and novelist Scott Young and his mother Rassy Young. Having first played in high school instrumental rock bands in Winnipeg (one of whom, the Squires, had a local hit with "The Sultan") he began to work the folk clubs of Toronto, where he befriended guitarist Stephen Stills. Before fame, Young spent a summer in Thunder Bay, Ontario, playing at local clubs and gigs. Joni Mitchell: Encyclopedia II - Honorary degree - Practical use

Recipients of an honorary doctorate who do not also hold a bona fide doctorate often choose not to use the title of "doctor", though it may be appropriate to use the title provided it was conferred based on some tangible and relevant achievement. Even so, one who holds a honorary doctorate may use the title "doctor". Pink Floyd - Syd Barrett led years: 1965-1968. Pink Floyd evolved from an earlier band, formed in 1964, which was at various times called Sigma 6, The Meggadeaths, The Screaming Abdabs, and The Abdabs (see Band members for previous line-ups). When this band split up, some of its members - guitarist Bob Klose, bass player Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason, and future keyboardist Rick Wright, who at this point played primarily wind instruments - formed a new band called Tea Set. A short time after their formation, they were joined by guitarist Syd Barrett, who ...

Joni Mitchell: Encyclopedia II - Daryl Hall - 1980s

Daryl Hall - Voices 1980. The eighties brought about change for Hall & Oates. They had determined that the biggest problem was that their music was being filtered through outsider producers and studio musicians who weren't familiar with their own tastes and thoughts. They also wished to capture the sound of New York City, which by then had become their home. So, instead of recording in Los Angeles like they'd done previously, they decided to record at Electric Lady Studios in New York, just five minutes away ...
