John Stott: Encyclopedia - Annihilationism

Annihilationism is one of several doctrines of hell in the Christian religion. It states that the final fate of the wicked (sinners) is total destruction, similar to eternal unconsciousness. It rejects the Traditionalist view that hell is a place of never-ending torture and/or separation from God. Annihilationism - Annihilationism in Christianity. In contrast to Traditionalism, which holds that the wicked will suffer in torment forever, and Universalism, which holds that all humanity will eventually ...

Sermon - The delivery of sermons. John Stott: Encyclopedia - Christian left

The Christian Left encompasses those who hold a strong Christian belief and share left-wing or socialist ideals. Contrary to the situation in the United States, the majority of Christians in western Europe have left-wing inclinations in their political views. Many such people assert that their left-wing views derive directly from their Christian faith, and some cite Jesus as "the first socialist". Many adherents hold also that the early Church practiced socialism, or even something resembling communism ("The community of ...

John Stott: Encyclopedia II - Annihilationism - Annihilationism in Christianity

In contrast to Traditionalism, which holds that the wicked will suffer in torment forever, and Universalism, which holds that all humanity will eventually be saved, Annhilationism concludes that, although God may use hell to exact some conscious punishment for sins, he will eventually destroy or annihilate the wicked completely, leaving only the righteous to live on in immortality. The doctrine is often, although not always, bound-up with the notion of "Conditional Immortality", a belief that the soul is not innately immortal. At deat ...

John Stott: Encyclopedia II - Sydney Anglicans - Evangelical Distinctives

Because of Sydney's commitment to Evangelical theology and practice, many non-Evangelical Anglicans within the diocese have felt threatened and isolated. John Stott: Encyclopedia II - Expository preaching - Systematic exposition

There are two ways in which texts are selected for exposition: use of a lectionary (common in mainline denominational churches), or letting the preacher or individual church decide which books or passages are examined (common in fundamentalist and evangelical churches). Expository preaching - The Lectionary Method. A lectionary is a pre-arranged set of passages on which the preacher is to expound. The passages found in the lectionary are usually influenced by the church calenda ...

John Stott: Encyclopedia II - Oxford Inter-Collegiate Christian Union - History

Oxford Inter-Collegiate Christian Union - Foundation. OICCU was modelled after the CICCU, founded two years earlier, but later incorporated a Daily Prayer Meeting established in Brasenose College in 1867. Like Wycliffe Hall (also 1877), it could be seen as a response to the University's abandonment of its previous officially Protestant position. The initial members included Frank Chavasse, subsequently Bishop of Liverpool and founder of St Peter's College. Oxfor ...

Sermons are occasionally known as homilies, especially in the Roman Catholic Church and similar traditions. John Stott: Encyclopedia II - Today's New International Version - TNIV Controversy

When TNIV was launched first in 2002, its publication caused considerable controversy, especially among American fundamentalist Protestants. Some claimed the publication of a gender-inclusive bible was a betrayal, because Zondervan Publishing House promised (in a press statement in 1997) not to revise the existing NIV to include gender-accurate language. Although TNIV was published as a separate translation, and its word choices are much more conservative than many other Biblical translations, TNIV has received much more attention than other comparable projects, mainly because the original NIV has been the b ...

John Stott: Encyclopedia II - Expository preaching - Scriptural basis for exposition

For those who believe that the dominant source of Christian understanding is the bible, it may seem obvious that expository preaching should be essential (though this is not the case with the seeker movement). Nonetheless the logic of their position demands that preaching itself should have a scriptural warrant. The biblical basis for expository preaching can be found in many places in the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 is perhaps the most important, for it states that Scripture is "breathed out by God", which means that the Bible is actual ...

John Stott: Encyclopedia II - Expository preaching - The expository preacher

Expository preachers generally believe that their main duty as a pastor is the preaching of the Bible. As such, they will spend a considerable amount, if not the majority, of their time studying and understanding the text in question, as well as associated texts on the same subject, believing it to be absolutely necessary for the welfare of their congregation. While studying, they will also be praying that God will reveal to them the proper meaning of the text, and that the hearts and minds of the congregation will be changed by it (believing that they do not have ...

John Stott: Encyclopedia II - Trinity College Cambridge - History

The college was founded by Henry VIII in 1546, from the merger of two existing colleges: Michaelhouse (founded by Hervey de Stanton in 1324), and King's Hall (established by Edward II in 1317 and refounded by Edward III in 1337). At the time, Henry had been wiping out and seizing church lands from abbeys and monasteries. The universities of Oxford and Cambridge, being both religious institutions and quite rich, expected to be next in line. The king duly passed an Act of Parliament that allowed him to suppress (a ...

John Stott: Encyclopedia II - Trinity College Cambridge - Legends

Many apocryphal stories have been told about the college's wealth. Trinity is sometimes suggested to be the second or third largest landowner in the UK (or in England) - after the Crown Estate and the Church of England. (A variant of this legend is repeated in the Tom Sharpe novel Porterhouse Blue.) Despite the legend's falsehood, it is frequently repeated by tour guides. A second legend is that it is possible to walk from Cambridge to Oxford on land solely owned by Trinity. Several varieties of this legend exist - others refer ...

The Great Court Run The Great Court Run is an attempt to run round the perimeter of Great Court (approximately 367 metres), in the 43 seconds during the clock striking twelve. Students traditionally attempt the complete the circuit on the day of the Matriculation Dinner. It is a rather difficult challenge and the only people believed to have actually completed the run in time are Lord Burghley in 1927 and Sebastian Coe when he beat Steve Cram in a charity race in October 1988. Today the challenge is only open to freshers, many of whom ...

John Stott: Encyclopedia II - Expository preaching - Expository Preaching and the Seeker Movement

The seeker movement stresses the use of topical preaching in an attempt to make the Bible "relevant" to the congregation, specifically visitors with little or no recent church background. As such, expository preaching is very seldom used, and if so it may cover a book of the Bible at a very surface level (no more than 4-8 weeks total). Many verses that do not neatly fall into a topic, or where the topic (such as the Old Testament sacrificial system) is not considered "relevant" to the needs of the congregation, are thus not covered within the seeker movement. T ...
