John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Apple Records - Releases on the Apple label

The first LP release from Apple Records (also the first "solo" album by a Beatle) was George Harrison's Wonderwall Music, his soundtrack recordings for the movie Wonderwall, on November 1, 1968. Shortly afterward came the Two Virgins album by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, released on November 11. (Both EMI and Capitol Records refused distribution, because John and Yoko were shown naked on the cover; the album was licensed to Track Records in the UK and Tetragrammaton Records in the US.) Two Virgins was closely followe ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - The Catcher in the Rye - Controversy

The Catcher in the Rye has been shrouded in controversy since its publication. Reasons for banning have been the use of offensive language, premarital sex, alcohol abuse, and prostitution. According to some extremist theories, the book is an FBI or CIA tool for mind control. Mark David Chapman, murderer of musician John Lennon, was carrying the book when he was arrested immediately after the murder and referred to it in his statement to police shortly thereafter. Oddly enough, Lennon had been reading the book at the time of his ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - The Beatles - Song catalogue

In 1963 The Beatles gave their song publishing rights to Northern Songs, a company created by Brian Epstein and music publisher Dick James. Northern Songs went public in 1965 with Lennon and McCartney each holding 15% of the company's shares while Dick James and the company's chairman, Charles Silver held a controlling 37.5%. In 1969, following a failed attempt by Lennon and McCartney to buy back the company, James and Silver sold Northern Songs to British TV company Associated TeleVision (ATV), ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - The Beatles - Studio style evolution

Many observers have noted that understanding the success of The Beatles and their music begins and ends with an appreciation for the diverse ways in which they (especially Lennon and McCartney) blended their voices as instruments. The role of producer George Martin is often cited as a crucial element in the success of The Beatles. He used his experience to bring out the potential in the group, recognizing and nurturing their creativity rather than imposing his views. His earlier production experience ranged through acts such as Jimmy ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Let It Be - The released album

In March and April of 1970, the project was given to producer Phil Spector, who compiled the eventually released album - now entitled Let It Be. The album and the movie with the same name were released on May 8, 1970; the Beatles had already broken up by that time. The movie captured on film some of the tensions within the band, and also included footage from the rooftop concert. The rooftop performance closed with the song "Get Back", and afterwards John Lennon remarked, "I'd like to say 'thank you' on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we passed the audition." The joke was added to the studio ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Runcorn - Transport

Runcorn is well served by roads (the M56 motorway passes to the south of the town, and fast Expressways run round and through the new town), railways (Runcorn station on the Liverpool to Crewe line and Runcorn East of the Chester to Warrington line) and is within 15 minutes drive of Liverpool John Lennon Airport. It is connected to Widnes across the Mersey by a rail bridge. Road transport went by ferry until the 1890s when a transporter bridge was built. This was replaced in 1962 by a steel arched bridge resembling the Sydney Harbour Bridge. ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Norwegian Wood This Bird Has Flown - Inspiration from infidelity

The song was apparently inspired by Lennon's extra-marital flings. Ironically, he wrote it while he was on a holiday with his wife, Cynthia, in the Alps. They were joined by the Beatles' producer George Martin, who had injured himself early in the holiday, and his wife. Martin recalled: "It was during this time that John was writing songs for Rubber Soul, and one of the songs he composed in the hotel bedroom, while we were all gathered around, nursing my broken foot, was a little dit ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Paul Is Dead - Yellow Submarine album

A small number of alleged clues have also been found in the Yellow Submarine album. The following list does not include alledged clues found in non-original songs on the album. Paul Is Dead - The cover. On the cover of Yellow Submarine, all the cartoon characters are pointing towards Paul, who is at the top of the hill in front of the group. John Lennon is holding his hand up over McCartney in what has been interpreted as a sign of benediction or the devil's horns. Many of the other characters are showing the same gesture.

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - The Beatles - In film

The Beatles had a limited but largely successful film career, beginning with A Hard Day's Night (1964), a loosely scripted comic farce, sometimes compared to the Marx Brothers in style. It focused on Beatlemania and their hectic touring lifestyle, and was directed in a quasi-documentary style in black-and-white by an up-and-coming Richard Lester, who was known for having directed a television version of the successful BBC radio series The Goon Show as well as the offbeat short film The Running, Jumping and Standing Still Film - written, produced by and sta ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Hot Chocolate - Biography

Hot Chocolate was a British band of the 1960s, and 1970s, and 1980s formed by Errol Brown (a Briton who was born in Jamaica). They were originally named 'The Hot Chocolate Band' by Mavis Smith, who worked for the Apple Corps press office. This was quickly shortened to just Hot Chocolate. Errol started their recording career making a reggae version of John Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance", but he was told he needed permission. Much to Errol's surprise, he was contacted by Apple Records, and discovered that John Le ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Francis Beaumont - Selected works

The true extent to which each play was written by Fletcher and by Beaumont is unknown (compare also the shared song-writing of John Lennon and Paul McCartney), and it's now generally agreed that others collaborated with them to some extent—Massinger, Rowley, Shirley, and even Shakespeare, though the following categorizations are generally agreed upon. As regards their respective powers, Beaumont is held to have had the graver, solider, and more stately genius, while Fletcher excelled in brightness, wit, and gaiety. The former was the stronger in judgment, the latter in fancy. The plays contain many very beautiful ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Loser person - Loser in popular culture

The word is used in several songs, movies, television shows and magazines. John Lennon wrote the song "I'm A Loser" which is featured on The Beatles' album Beatles For Sale. The Born Loser is a comic strip based on the concept of loser. Beck penned a song entitled Loser that included the phrase "I'm a loser" in both Spanish and English. Embittered Cleveland NBA fans lashed out at the former Cavalier Carlos Boozer by creating the rather obviously titled satire cartoon "Carlos Loozer". Loser was a 2000 film starring Jason Biggs as a clueless farm boy attending ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Ernie Sigley - Beatles

Sigley is especially remembered for his 1964 association with the Adelaide leg of The Beatles tour of Australia. His intelligent questioning of The Beatles during media meetings, was a relief for the group after the banal media probing that had already started to see the group growing disillusioned with their success. In one famous press conference, Sigley's questioning of The Beatles about their rock influences, and being able to discuss them (e.g. Buddy Holly), bought about an enthusiastic response from John Lennon, which contrasted strongly from all the questions asked by o ...
