John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Magical Mystery Tour - History of the project

After Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Paul McCartney wanted to create a film based upon the Beatles and their music. This film was to be unscripted; various "ordinary" people (including John Lennon's uncle Charlie Lennon) were to travel on a charabanc bus and have unspecified "magical" adventures, in the manner of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters. The Magical Mystery Tour movie was made, but it turned out that no interesting adventures actually occurred. (At least, none that would have suited the original concept; during the ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Paul McCartney - 1990s

Following the release of the album Off the Ground, the similarly-scaled New World Tour took place in 1993. The live album capturing this tour, Paul Is Live, parodied the famous Paul Is Dead conspiracy of the late '60s - in both the title, and in the cover art which showed McCartney walking across the famous Abbey Road zebra crossing on his own - once again showing his willingness to acknowledge his Beatles past. (The dog with him is a descendant of Martha, his pet sheepdog from the Beatles years and inspiration for the song "Martha ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Paul Is Dead - Yellow Submarine album

A small number of alleged clues have also been found in the Yellow Submarine album. Paul Is Dead - The cover. On the cover of Yellow Submarine, all the cartoon characters are pointing towards Paul, who is at the top of the hill in front of the group. John Lennon is holding his hand up over McCartney in what has been interpreted as a sign of benediction or the devil's horns. Many of the other characters are showing the same gesture.

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Yoko Ono - Musical Career

Ono achieved success as a musician in her own right. In 1961, years before meeting Lennon, she had her first major public performance in an all-Ono concert at the 258-seat Carnegie Recital Hall (not the larger "Main Hall"). This concert featured radical experimental music and performances. She also collaborated with experimental luminaries such as John Cage and jazz legend Ornette Coleman. Ono's music changed after her marriage; while many of her early songs retain the surreal quality of her art and films, her later songs are usually more conventional — for example, the seven pop songs that she contr ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Paul McCartney - Early solo career

As the Beatles broke up in 1970, Paul launched a solo career with his album McCartney, which featured him playing all the instruments and singing all vocals except for some backing vocals from his wife Linda. While some found this record underwhelming (including Lennon in an interview), it did contain "Maybe I'm Amazed", which has remained a centerpiece of McCartney's concerts ever since. Another successful track was "Every Night", which was later a hit for singer Phoebe Snow. The simplicity of the album later became a touchstone for ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Paul McCartney - Early years

James Paul McCartney was born at Walton Hospital, located in northern Liverpool, where his mother had worked as a nurse, and where his brother, Michael McCartney (also a musician, whose stage name is Mike McGear), was born a year later. He (and presumably his brother) were baptized Roman Catholic, but otherwise raised non-denominationally; his parents were a mixed-religion couple. His father, Jim McCartney, was a self-taught pianist, and dance-band leader who encouraged Paul to be musical. His father gave him a trumpet, which he largely aban ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Liam Gallagher - Lead Singer

Liam is well known for his original style of singing and his stage presence. Grating, arrogant and often nasal, Liam's voice in the Oasis tracks is recognisable. Noel has hinted that he uses certain words regularly in his songs because of the way Liam pronounces them when he sings. For example, Noel has included the word 'shine' in several songs because Liam famously sings it as 'Sheee-yienn-ah' (probably influenced in part by John Lennon's protracted, nasal phrasing on words such as "shiiiine" in the Beatles song "Rain") and John Lennon's s ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - World peace - History

Some historians identify a long-term trend where nation-states stop fighting and become united. For example, old Europe with wars culminating in World War I and World War II, compared with the European Union; warring Chinese states compared with the modern Chinese nation. Certain historians theorize that the whole world will eventually follow this pattern as well. Dr. Frank Laubach, an American missionary to the Philippines in 1935 saw poverty, injustice and illiteracy as impediments to world peace. He developed the "Each One Teach One" literacy program which taught about 60 millio ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - World peace - Assessment

Whether world peace is achievable or not depends on what exactly we mean by it. The utopian ideal of conflict-free interaction between all humans (or even all sentient beings) is seen by some as highly improbable, due to the wide range of behaviour and personal circumstances that exist. Some people, acting in some manner, in some circumstances, are likely to get into a conflict over one thing or another. Indeed, the case can be made that if we did not conflict in any way with others, we would either be totally independent from them (rendering the issue moot) or we would have none ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Paul McCartney - Solo again: 1980s

In 1980, as Wings came to an end, McCartney made international headlines when he was arrested for possession of marijuana in Japan and he spent nine days in prison there before being deported. Since that time, he has reportedly stopped using all drugs, although it is generally believed that he used marijuana consistently throughout the late 1960s and 1970s. He was quoted in the 2000s as saying that he had recently ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Paul McCartney - Pseudonyms

Over the years McCartney has released work under a number of alter egos. This has generally been for more experimental and less commercial material. In 1967 he produced the song "I'm the Urban Spaceman" by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, but McCartney was credited as "Apollo C. Vermouth". In 1977 he released an orchestral version of the Ram album under the name Percy 'Thrills' Thrillington. In the 1990s he collaborated with Youth of Killing Joke under the name The Fireman and released two ambient albums, Strawberries Oceans Ship ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - The Hurdy Gurdy Man - History

Donovan wrote and recorded much of The Hurdy Gurdy Man in late 1967 not long after recording the songs that would form A Gift from a Flower to a Garden. The rest of The Hurdy Gurdy Man was recorded in April of 1968, after Donovan visited Rishikesh, India to study under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. John Lennon, Cynthia Lennon, George Harrison, Pattie Boyd, Paul McCartney, Jane Asher, Mia Farrow, Prudence Farrow, and Mike Love were there as well. Donovan has since said in concerts that George Harrison wrote a line for "Hurdy Gur ...

Shortly thereafter, during the Fall 1970 recording sessions for the Pearl album with Doors and Phil Ochs producer Paul A. Rothchild, Joplin died of an overdose of unusually pure heroin on October 4, 1970 at the Landmark Motor Hotel in Hollywood, California, aged only 27. The last recordings she completed were Mercedes-Benz and a birthday greeting for John Lennon on 1 October; Lennon later told Dick Cavett that her taped greeting arrived ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Liverpool - Transport

There are three tunnels under the River Mersey: one railway tunnel, the Mersey Railway Tunnel, and two road tunnels, Queensway Tunnel and Kingsway Tunnel. There is also the Mersey Ferry, made famous by the song Ferry Cross the Mersey by Gerry and the Pacemakers. In fact the song is now played on the ferryboats themselves every time they prepare to dock at Liverpool. In 2001, Liverpool Airport, situated near Speke in the south of the city, was renamed Liverpool John Lennon Airport, in honour of the late Beatle John Lennon. The a ...

John Lennon: Encyclopedia II - Jimmy Nicol - With the Beatles

When Ringo Starr collapsed and was hospitalized on June 3, 1964 with tonsilitis on the eve of the 1964 Australasian Tour, the Beatles were in desperate need of a substitute drummer in order to continue as planned. Brian Epstein telephoned Nicol, then 24, who at the time was playing with a small band in Liverpool. Nicol was excited by the concept of being a short-term Beatle, as he was a fan himself. Epstein took him to meet John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison; they hit it off, and Nicol was hired. His first show with the B ...
