John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - Rorke's Drift - Victoria Crosses

Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded to the British defenders, the most ever received in a single action. This high number may be interpreted as a reaction to the earlier British defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana. The extolling of the victory at Rorke's Drift took the public's attention away from the massive defeat at Isandlwana and the fact that Lord Chelmsford had disobeyed orders by entering Zululand. Dalton was not originally named among the VC recipients, eventually receiving his medal in January 1880 after an outcry because a n ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - Dalton McGuinty - Member of Provincial Parliament

His father, Dalton Sr., served as Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Ottawa South until his death in 1990. An often-told anecdote relates that Dalton Sr.'s ten children met to decide who among them should run to replace their father and selected Dalton Jr, "since they already had 2000 signs with that name on it in the garage." Dalton Jr. won the Ontario Liberal Party's nomination for Ottawa South for the provincial election of 1990, and was elected to the Legisla ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - Rorke's Drift - The Prelude

At two o'clock in the afternoon on the 22nd Major Spalding, still unaware of the disaster at Isandlwana, left the station in order to ascertain the whereabouts of a company of the 1/24th due two days earlier, while Lieutenant John Chard of the Royal Engineers rode down to the drift itself in order to inspect the work being carried out there. At roughly 3.30 two officers of the Natal Native Contingent - Lieutenants Vane and Adendorff - came upon the drift bearing the news of Isandlwana and that one wing of the Zulu impi was bearing down on th ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - Myoglobin - Role in disease

Myoglobin is the putative protein that causes acute renal failure in rapid breakdown of muscle (e.g. rhabdomyolysis, severe crush trauma, malignant hyperthermia, status epilepticus and neuroleptic malignant syndrome), due to its toxicity to renal tubular epithelium. Myoglobin is a sensitive marker for muscle injury, making it a potential marker for myocardial infarction in patients with chest pain. Its specificity and the cost of t ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - Licence to Kill - Reception

Taking inflation into account Licence to Kill is the least financially successful James Bond film. Since its release many authors, fans, and critics have debated the reasoning for this. More often, Licence to Kill is blamed for its increase in violence over previous Bond outings. This led to a 15 rating in Britain and a PG-13 rating in the United States; the latter having been created in 1984 and gone through a ma ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - UMIST - The Mechanics' Institute 1824-1882

The foundation of UMIST can be traced to 1824 during the Industrial revolution when a group of Manchester businessmen and industrialists met in a pub, the Bridgewater Arms, to establish the Mechanics' Institute in Manchester, where artisans could learn basic science, particularly mechanics and chemistry. Hundreds of such institutions were founded in towns and cities throughout the country and while many of the fine Victorian buildings built to house them remain, Manchester's alone survived as an independent institution serving some ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - An Experimental Enquiry Concerning the Source of the Heat which is Excited by Friction - Experiments

Rumford had observed the frictional heat generated by boring cannon at the arsenal in Munich. Rumford immersed a cannon barrel in water and arranged for a specially blunted boring tool. He showed that the water could be boiled within roughly two and a half hours and that the supply of frictional heat was seemingly inexhaustible. Rumford confirmed that no physical change had taken place in the material of the cannon by comparing the specific heats of the material machined away and that remaining were the same. Rumford argued that the s ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - Darwin from Insectivorous plants to Worms - Background

In the aftermath of the publication of On the Origin of Species through Natural Selection in 1859, Charles Darwin's allies Charles Lyell, Joseph Dalton Hooker, Thomas Huxley, Alfred Russel Wallace and Asa Gray in America worked to spread acceptance of its ideas despite difficulty in coming to terms with natural selection and man's descent from animals. Darwin's research and experiments on plants and animals continued, and his extensive writings countered the arguments against evolu ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - Progressive Conservative leadership convention 1967 - Background

The leader was elected by the approximately 2,200 delegates to the convention who voted. Most of the delegates were elected from the party's associations in each riding (electoral district), as well as from the party's women's and youth associations. Many delegates were ex officio delegates, i.e., they received delegate status as a result of their positions on the national executive committee of the party, the executives of its affiliated provincial parties, and the party's national women's and youth organizations. John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - Publication of Darwin's theory - Asa Gray and the young guard

Others helped with providing information, including Asa Gray with regard to American plants. Darwin wrote to Gray saying that he had "come to the heterodox conclusion that there are no such things as independently created species – that species are only strongly defined varieties. I know that this will make you despise me". An intrigued Gray admitted to his own belief that there was some law or power inherent in plants making varieties appear, and asked if Darwin was finding this law. Realising that Gray had not grasped what he was suggest ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - Henry Cavendish - Weighing the Earth

Cavendish is also credited with one of the earliest accurate calculations of the mass of the earth. The apparatus used was actually designed and built by John Michell, who died before he could begin the experiment. The apparatus was sent in crates to Cavendish, who completed the experiment in 1797. The apparatus consisted of a torsion balance to measure the gravitational attraction between two 350 pound lead spheres, from which he calculated Newton's gravitational constant, G, which he used to calculate the earth's mass. His re ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - British Guiana 1c magenta - Description and history

Only one copy of the 1¢ stamp is known to exist. It is in used condition and has been cut in an octagonal shape. A signature, in accordance to Dalton's policy, can be seen on the left hand side. Although dirty and heavily postmarked on the upper left hand side, it is nonetheless regarded as priceless. It was discovered in 1873, by 12-year-old Scottish schoolboy Vernon Vaughan in the Guyanese town of Demerara, amongst his uncle's letters. There was no record of it in his stamp catalogue, so he sold it to a collector some weeks later f ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - Hollywood blacklist - The Hollywood Ten

Following his blacklisting, Trumbo and others were able to continue working without screen credit by using a pseudonym or having a fellow member of the MPAA submit their scripts to the studio in their name. This tactic enabled movies such as The Bridge on the River Kwai to be completed. Several screenwriters moved to the United Kingdom, where they were either able to find work in film and television, or wrote scripts that were then sent surreptitiously to a Hollywood studio. Some, like playwright Arthur Miller, and actor John Randolph ...

John Dalton: Encyclopedia II - George Brown Baron George-Brown - Entry to Parliament

As a TGWU official, Brown was an attractive candidate to Labour constituencies seeking a candidate, as the TGWU would sponsor him and pay election expenses. He was selected for Belper, a mixed constituency near Derby which was one of the top Labour target seats. In the 1945 general election Brown won the seat with a majority of nearly 9,000. He was invited as one of a dozen 'Young Victors' to a private dinner given by Hugh Dalton on July 30, 1945 who was talent-spotting and networking. Brown was immediately picked to be a Parliamentary Private Secretary by Ge ...
