Jet Li: Encyclopedia II - Boxer Rebellion - In fiction

The events were made into the 1963 film 55 Days at Peking. The film, which was shot in Spain, needed thousands of Chinese extras, and the company sent scouts throughout Spain to hire as many as they could find. The result was that many Chinese restaurants in Spain closed for the duration of the filming because the restaurant staff - often the restaurant's owners - were hired away by the film company. The company hired so many that for several months there was scarcely a Chinese restaurant to be found open in the entire country.See also:

During the 1840s, the Opium Wars broke out between Britain and China. The wars were fought after China had banned the importation of opium, which the British demanded they had a right to sell to the Chinese population. The French, Russian, and Japanese also soon advanced on China. Due to their inferior weapons and navy, the Qing Dynasty was forced to sign many Unequal Treaties including Treaty of Nanking (1842), the Treaty of Aigun (1858), the Treaty of Tientsin (1858), the Convention of Peking (1860), the Treaty of Shimonoseki (1895) ...

Jet Li: Encyclopedia II - Chinese martial arts - History of Chinese martial arts

The oldest evidence of martial arts in China goes back to the Zhou dynasty (1111-255 BC). There are passages in the Zhuang Zi (a.k.a. Chuang Tzu) that clearly pertain to the psychology and practice of martial arts. The Dao De Jing by Lao Zi contains many principles that are applicable to martial arts, and is similar in point of view to the Sun Zi Bing Fa (Sun Zi's Art of War) which deals directly with martial arts. History says that Zhuang Zi lived during the reign of King Hui of Liang and King Xuan of Qi, which m ...

Jet Li: Encyclopedia II - Wushu sport - Other routines

The majority of routines used in the sport are new, modernized recompilations of traditional routines. However, routines taken directly from traditional styles, including the styles that are not part of standard events, may be performed in competition, especially in China. These routines generally do not garner as many points as their modern counterparts, and are performed in events separate from the compulsory routine events. Among these, the more commonly seen routines include: Baguazhang (八卦掌) - Eight-Trigrams Palm ...

Jet Li: Encyclopedia II - Chinese martial arts - Training in Chinese martial arts

Most styles of Chinese martial arts contain practice of the application of techniques (both as prepared drills and as free sparring), but also the practice of what is known as forms, or taolu (套路 - tào lù) in Chinese. Forms are a pre-choreographed series of techniques and movements, performed alone or with one or more partners. Wuxia - Plot and setting. The modern wuxia stories are basically adventure stories with a strong dose of cultural and historical context. Plot differs largely from writer to writer. A common plot typically features a young male protagonist (only two modern wuxia novels have detailed female protagonists) in ancient China, who experiences a tragedy (e.g. the loss of a family or an old master), goes through exceeding hardship and arduous trials, and studies under a great master(s) of martial arts, or comes in ...

Jet Li: Encyclopedia II - Arcadia California - Demographics

Arcadia has experienced a tremendous demographic shift in recent years. A city that was almost uniformly white Protestant 30 years ago is now 45% Asian and is expected to have an Asian majority before the 2010 census. The transformation is linked to a rapid increase in wealth in Asian countries such as Taiwan, China, Korea and Hong Kong. This has led to the immigration of many Asians to countries like the United States. Arcadia offers excellent public schools, which are seen by many young upper-middle class Asian immigrant families as a tick ...

The famous Route 66, immortalized in song and literature, passes through Arcadia, where it is known as Huntington Drive. Running parallel to and about a mile south of the 210 freeway, it cuts across the middle section of Arcadia. The city is mentioned by Jack Kerouac in his novel On The Road: Dean, the protagonist, is run out of town by a group of hostile teens when he stops for food at a local drive-in restaurant with a young Mexican woman. The vignette demonstrates the intolerance and racism prevalent in many places during 1950s America. The drive-in restaurant may be based o ...
