Great Awakening
Great Awakening A Christian revivalist movement that swept the American colonies from 1725 to 1760. In experiences of ecstatic joy and release, converts "awakened" to Christ and knew him experientially. By 1730, Theodore J. Frelinghuysen, a Dutch Calvinist, and Gilbert Tennent, a revivalist Presbyterian, had begun the Awakening from their churches in New Jersey. In 1734, Jonathan Edwards, the most formidable apologist for this experiential religion, witnessed to the "surprising work of God" in his Congregationalist church at Northampton, Massachusetts. British evangelist George Whitefield toured the colonies between 1738 and 1740 lending impetus and cohesiveness to the movement. Itinerant revivalists carried the Awakening to the South. Its distinguishing characteristics included the insistence on the personal nature of conversion to Christ, itinerant ministry, and a novel preaching style appealing openly to the emotions. Mobile ministry and individual conversion tended to undermine the parish structure of the old tax-supported churches and led to a proliferation of separate and voluntary ones. The revivalists succeeded in revitalizing colonial Protestantism by a typically modern appeal to individual experience. They accommodated New World Calvinism and Anglicanism to conditions of dramatically expanded personal liberty.

 | | | Jersey Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Bill Bradley - U.S. SenatorBradley had harbored political ambitions for years, and in 1978 decided to run for United States Senate in New Jersey, for a seat held by liberal Republican and four-term incumbent Clifford P. Case. Case lost his primary to anti-tax conservative Jeff Bell, and Bradley won the seat in the general election with 55% of the vote.
In the Senate, Bradley acquired a reputation for being somewhat aloof and a definite policy wonk, specializing in complex reform initiatives. The best known of these was the 1986 overhaul of the federal tax code, ...

 | | | Jersey Dictionary: Remote Viewing Education Students often
ask how they can become involved in psi research and what educational courses
they can pursue to become employed in the field. I often have to disappoint
them. As mentioned elsewhere, actual funding for parapsychology in America has
been abysmal. Private sponsors have kept the field afloat, but more and more
research groups are disappearing.

 | | | Jersey Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Lindbergh kidnapping - The BodyOn May 12, 1932, delivery truck driver William Allen pulled his truck to the side of a road about 4.5 miles from the Lindbergh home. He went to a grove of trees to relieve himself, and there he discovered the corpse of a toddler. Allen notified police, who took the body to a morgue in nearby Trenton, New Jersey.
The body was badly decomposed, and had been partly eaten by scavengers. The skull was badly fractured, the left leg and the right foot were missing; and it was impossible to determine if the body was a boy or a girl. Because the right foot was missing, the body could ...

In that year, he was chosen as a delegate from Virginia to the First Continental Congress. Although the American Revolution had not yet devolved into open warfare, tensions between the colonies and Great Britain continued to rise, and Washington attended the Second Continental Congress, in 1775, in military uniform—the only delegate to do so. He strongly supported independence.
The Second Continental Congress needed to select as commander in chief of its newly forme ...

The event that year was still called the Atlantic City Pageant, and the winner of the grand prize, the Golden Mermaid trophy, wasn't even called "Miss America" until 1922, when she re-entered the pageant. The pageant was initiated in an attempt to keep tourists in Atlantic City after Labor Day. In the early years of the pageant, a beauty competition of the women wearing bathing suits was the main event. When the Miss Americ ...
