Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Eastern span replacement of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge - Earthquake damage

During the earthquake, which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, a 50-foot section of the upper deck of the eastern truss portion of the bridge collapsed onto the deck below, indirectly causing one death (actually due to misdirection of traffic by the California Highway Patrol). The bridge was closed for a month and one day as construction crews repaired the fallen section. It reopened on November 18th of that year. Given the distance to the epicenter of the Loma Prieta (roughly 70 miles south of San Francisco), there was great surpris ...

Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Gray Davis - Governorship

With his political successes, he was strongly viewed as a possible Democratic candidate for President in either 2000 or 2004. The California electricity crisis of 2001 and budget deficit of 2003 hurt his reputation, and any talk of Presidential candidacy completely evaporated. His early administration focused on balancing the state budget and education reform. However energy problems soon came to dominate his agenda. As a result of a flawed bipartisan energy deregulation signed into law by the previous governor Pete Wilson, electric p ...

Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Talk radio - Talk radio in the U.S.

Talk radio - Politically oriented talk radio. The United States saw dramatic growth in the popularity of talk radio during the 1990s. The repeal of the FCC "fairness doctrine" in 1987-which had required that stations provide free air time for responses to any controversial opinions that were broadcast-provided an opportunity for a kind of flatly partisan (and often intentionally inflammatory) programming that had not previously existed. (There had been some precursors for this, such as the Los Angeles-area contro ...

Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Populism - Populist methods

Populism is characterized by a sometimes radical critique of the status quo, but on the whole does not have a strong political identity as either a left-wing or right-wing movement. Populism has taken left-wing, right-wing, and even centrist forms. In recent years, conservative politicians have begun adopting populist rhetoric; for example, promising to "get big government off your backs", or to stand up to "the powerful trial lawyer lobby", "the liberal elite", or "the Hollywood elite". Also in recent years, left-wing politicians have incre ...

Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - One Enneagram - Instincts

One Enneagram - Self-Preservational Instinct. These types of Reformers worry about their material well-being, and have a strong drive for self-gratification. However, their superegos tend to counter such drives. Each mistake they make is a catastrophe to them. They are often fastidious about their environments, such as Felix Unger in The Odd Couple. Whatever they worry about, they scold in others. Health conscious Reformers would scold others for not taking care of their health, while penny-pinching Reformers would scold others for ...

Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Talk radio - Talk radio in Canada

In contrast to talk radio stations in the United States where syndicated programs tend to make up a significant part of most schedules, privately-owned Canadian talk radio stations tend to be predominantly local in programming and focus. There is no Canadian content requirement for talk radio, or "spoken word", programming. The only nationally-syndicated, politically-oriented weekday talk radio show in Canada is Adler On Line, hosted by Charles Adler and heard on eleven stations across the country. Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Talk radio - History

Talk radio has existed since at least the mid-1950s. New York's John Nebel was among the first to explore the medium. Two radio stations—KMOX, 1120 AM in St. Louis, Missouri, and KABC, 790 AM in Los Angeles—adopted an all-talk show format in 1960, and both claim to be the first to have done so. KABC station manager Ben Hoberman and KMOX station manager Robert Hyland independently developed the all-talk format. In the 1970s and early 1980s, as many listeners abandoned AM music formats for the high fidelity sound of the FM ra ...

Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - U.S. presidential election 1976 - General election

U.S. presidential election 1976 - Campaign. Jimmy Carter ran as an honest outsider and reformer, which many voters found attractive in the wake of the Watergate Scandal. President Ford, although personally unconnected with Watergate, was seen by many as too close to the discredited Richard Nixon administration, especially after Ford granted Nixon a presidential pardon. Carter led consistently in the polls, as Ford was never able to shake voter dissatisfaction following Watergate. Ford was seen as the winne ...

Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Linda Ronstadt - Controversy

On July 18, 2004, during a performance at the Aladdin Casino in Las Vegas, Ronstadt praised Michael Moore and his documentary film Fahrenheit 9/11. It was reported that some members of the audience walked out, tore down posters, threw drinks, and demanded she be removed from the stage. Initial reports were that Aladdin president Bill Timmins escorted her out of the premises without having a chance to go to her hotel suite to obtain her property, and vowed that, as long as he was running the casino, she would no longer be welcome. Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Herbert W. Armstrong - Beliefs

Many, but not all, of Herbert W. Armstrong's teachings appear to have been influenced by Church of God ministers Andrew N. Dugger (1886-1975) and Clarence O. Dodd (1899-1955). Herbert W. Armstrong preached a gospel that was quite different from that of mainstream Christianity because he did not primarily intend to attract members, but to serve as a base with which to warn the world of a timetable of coming events. The climax of those events, in his concept, would result in the return of Jesus Christ to Earth as King of kings and Lord of lords in order to establish the Kingdom of God. Herbert W. Arms ...
