| | | | Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - George Moscone - Assassination
George Moscone - Background.
In 1977 Moscone, Freitas and Hongisto all easily survived a recall election pushed by defeated Moscone opponent John Barbagelata and big business interests. That year also marked the passage of the district election system by San Francisco voters. The city's first district elections for Board of Supervisors took place in November of 1977. Among those elected were the city's first openly gay Supervisor, Harvey Milk, single mother and attorney Carol Ruth Silver, Chinese-American Gordon ...

His parents' response was to send him to Phillips Exeter Academy. From there, he went on to study biology at Stanford University, graduating in 1960. A civilian again, in the year 1962 he studied design at San Francisco Art Institute, photography at San Francisco State College, and was a participant in a legitimate s ...

| | | | Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Jello Biafra - MusicBiafra has been a prominent member of the Californian punk rock scene and, while a member of the Dead Kennedys, was one of the founding members of the San Francisco hardcore punk scene. The Dead Kennedys was one of the first U.S. punk bands to write politically themed songs (possibly inspired by Black Flag, another major Californian punk rock band of the era). The lyrics Biafra wrote with the Dead Kennedys helped popularize the use of humorous lyrics in punk rock. Many later punk rock bands would cite the Dead Kennedys as a major influence.See also:Jello Biafra, Jello Biafra - Biography, Jello Biafra - Early years and the Dead Kennedys, Jello Biafra - After the disbandment of the Dead Kennedys, Jello Biafra - Music, Jello Biafra - Political beliefs, Jello Biafra - Discography, Jello Biafra - Filmography, Jello Biafra - Notes Read more here: » Jello Biafra: Encyclopedia II - Jello Biafra - Music |

He claims that mankind is not yet ready for anarchy, and still needs government to control the order of human life for the safety and progression of human events.[16] In speeches, he has advised people to partake in civil disobedience, political pranks, and hacktivism. Some such acts that he has ...

| | | | Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Flat tax - Possible implementationsThere are several ways that flat tax implementation has been proposed, and very rarely has the proposition ammounted to a "true" flat tax where everyone pays exactly the same rate across their taxable income.
Flat tax - Flat tax with deductions.
The most common flat tax implementation proposition, and the type that has been proposed in the United States by Steve Forbes in his presidential campaign and by Dick Armey to congress, calls for base deductions for people and dependents. For example, the Armey pro ...

| | | | Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Howard Stern - The Move to Satellite RadioOn October 6, 2004, Stern announced on his show that he signed a five-year, $500 million deal with the satellite radio service Sirius. The deal, which took effect on January 1, 2006, enabled Stern to broadcast his show without the content restrictions imposed by the FCC. Stern's move to satellite radio has been compared with Milton Berle's move to television in 1948 - both Stern and Berle are/were the leading radio personalities of their times (Related: Mil ...

| | | | Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Flat tax - Fairness of taxationThis is a hotly debated issue with regards to flat taxes. Broadly, proponents of the flat tax claim it is fairer than progressive taxation, since "everybody pays the same". Opponents point out that for the state to raise the same amount of money under a flat rate tax requires that the rich pay less and the poor pay more than they would under a progressive tax system. Discussing the possible future introduction of flat tax in the UK, the journalist Neil Clark described it as "a far-right wheeze that would leave, according to a Treasury report, up to 30 million Britons worse off and the super-rich even ric ...

| | | | Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Iowa caucus - HistoryWhile the Iowa caucus has been the first such caucus each year in the United States for a century, it only came to national attention in 1976, when obscure Georgia governor Jimmy Carter won the most votes at the Democratic caucus. In a major upset, he went on to win his party's nomination and eventually the presidency. Since then, presidential candidates have focused increasingly on achieving a win in Iowa. In 2000, for example, the Iowa caucus results placed Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush far ahead of their rivals. The two would go on to win their ...

| | | | Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Howard Stern - BiographyHoward Stern was born into a Jewish family in Roosevelt, Long Island, New York. His father Ben worked at a radio station and Howard developed an interest in broadcasting as a child when he would accompany his father to work.
Stern often joked that his parents "abused" him as a child, and the strong possibility of frequent verbal abuse was confirmed when Stern played old family recordings during a 1990 broadcast. Many pieces of those old recordings have become soundbites, with such paternal gems as "I told you not to be stupid, you moron" and "Shut up! Sit down!" being screame ...

| | | | | Jerry Brown: Encyclopedia II - Flat tax - History and current useHistorically, the introduction of flat taxes was considered an improvement over the previous situation, where nobility and the clergy were often (nearly) exempt from paying any taxes at all. This was for instance one of the causes of the French Revolution. During the nineteenth century, flat taxes for all incomes were eventually introduced in most European countries.
After World War I, a progressive income tax was introduced in the majority of countries to fund increased government spending for social programmes and, in particular, la ...

San Francisco California - Roads and highways.
Because of its unique geography —making "beltways" somewhat impractical— and the "Freeway Revolt" of the late 1950s, San Francisco is one of the few cities in the US including Boston and New York City that has opted for European style arterial thoroughfares instead of a large network of major highways.
From San Francisco, the Bay Bridge is the only direct automobile link to the East Bay. Similarly, the Golden ...
