Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Jehovah's Witnesses splinter groups - Second crisis : Pastor Russell's death

After Charles Taze Russell's death in 1916, Joseph Franklin Rutherford was elected second president of the Watchtower Society and immediately started an intensive work of restructuring the movement which, by 1928, led to nearly three-quarters of the membership departing association with the Society. One of Rutherford's most controversial moves was the expulsion of four members (R. H. Hirsh, I. F. Haskins, A. I. Ritchie, and J. D. Wright) of the seven-member Board of Directors appointed by Pastor Russell, with his own appointees in July 1917. ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Jehovah - Jehovah is an 18th century English translation of יְהֹוָה [Hebrew word #3068]

Jehovah ( Latin Iéhova ) is an 18th century English translation of "יְהֹוָה", which is a Masoretic vocalization of "יהוה" [ i.e. the Tetragrammaton ]. "יְהֹוָה" is found 6518 times in the Ben Chayyim Hebrew text of 1525 A.D., which underlies the Old Testament of the King James Bible. The 1611 edition of the King James Bible translated "יְהֹוָה" as "I ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Jehovah's Witnesses splinter groups - Later departures

In 1928, Norman Woodworth left the Watchtower society to create the radio program Frank and Earnest with the help of the Brooklyn congregation of Bible Students. This eventually led to the founding of the “Dawn Bible Students Association” for the purpose of printing and distributing the Studies in the Scriptures series that the Watchtower Society had officially ceased publication of in 1927. In 1928, the Italian Bible Students Association in Hartford, Connecticut also withdrew its support from the Watchtower Society and changed its name to the Millennial Bible St ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Jehovah - KJVO Christians defend the vowel points of יְהֹוָה and the name Jehovah

Most modern scholars hold the view that the vowel points of the spelling "יְהֹוָה" (which would seem to indicate a pronunciation "Yehowah", if taken literally) are not the correct vowel points of God's name — and that they were actually never intended to be such, but were instead a masoretic Q're perpetuum, or implicit textual note to indicate that the letters YHWH should be pronounced out loud as "Adonai" when reading the text (something later misunderstood by early Christian Hebraists). Therefore most scholars ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Jehovah - Translations of YHWH found in writings of the Greek Fathers

The evidence of the Greek church fathers shows the forms Jabe and Jâo to be traditional, as well as the shortened Hebrew forms of the words Jah (see Psalms 68:4, for example) and Jahu (in proper names). It could indicate that the name was originally spoken Jaweh or Yahwe (often spelled Yahweh in modern usage). This is supported by Yahwitic names of the Masoretic text, the Peshitta Aramaic and the Marashu texts. The pronunciation of Yahweh is also preserved in ancient transliterations of the name written in Egyptian Hieroglyphics, cuneiform ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Faithful and Discreet Slave - Effect of Current Doctrine on Teaching Authority

Although the Faithful and Discreet Slave is believed to be the earthly source of doctrine for Jehovah's Witnesses, very few from this group have any decision making authority regarding institution of doctrine, changes to doctrine, or decisions relative to Jehovah's Witnesses worldwide. All decision making authority with regard to doctrine is vested entirely in the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses. Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Jehovah's Witnesses splinter groups - First splits : 1909

In 1907, Pastor Russell more pointedly expressed that Christians were not developed under the New Covenant, but that the New Covenant was future, and made between God and the nation of Israel for the purpose of teaching the world his plan. This, and controversy over other doctrines, led some to leave in 1909, leading to the formation of New Covenant Bible Students. M.L. McPhail, Pilgrim member of the Chicago Bible Students, also disassociated himself from Russell's movement at that time and led the New Covenant Bible Students in the ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Faithful and Discreet Slave - Current Doctrine

Jehovah's Witnesses believe only 144,001 humans (including Jesus) are ever going to be rewarded with immortal heavenly life as spirit creatures. They teach that Jesus was the first to be rewarded in this way, but that Revelation 7:4 and Revelation 14:1, 3 refer to a literal number (144,000) of additional people who will become "self-sustaining," that is, not needing anything outside themselves (food, sunlight, etc.) to maintain their own life. ( ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - American Standard Version - Usage of the ASV By the Jehovah's Witnesses

The ASV was used for many years by the Jehovah's Witnesses. They first began publishing the ASV in 1944 and have continued publishing the translation until the present time. The reasons for their choosing of the ASV were twofold: One reason for adoption of the ASV was due to its usage of "Jehovah" as the Divine Name, which was congruent with their doctrine, although their usage of it seems to have predated the release of the ASV. Also, there was a perception that the ASV had improved the translation of some verses in the King James Version, ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Nathan Homer Knorr - Contribution to Jehovah's Witnesses

Knorr's most striking contribution to Jehovah's Witnesses was an intense educational focus. Within a month of his taking office, arrangements were made for an Advanced Course in Theocratic Ministry, a school that featured Bible research and public speaking. On September 24, 1942, Knorr suggested that the Society establish another school to train missionaries for service in foreign countries where there was a great need for Kingdom proclaimers. The suggestion was unanimously approved by the board. In upstate New York, ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Bible Student movement - The Associated Bible Students

Many of the Bible Student congregations which hold to the writings and views of Pastor Russell refer to themselves under the generic title "Associated Bible Students". All congregations are autonomous, and despite use of this title, may not necessarily have contact with others. Those using this name are the largest segment of the massive exodus from the Watchtower Society in the decade following Russell's death in 1916. This occurred after Joseph Franklin Rutherford was elected the new pre ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - American Standard Version - History of the ASV

The ASV is rooted in the work that was done with the Revised Version. In 1870, an invitation was extended to American religious leaders for scholars to work on the Revised Version (RV) project. A year later, 30 scholars were chosen by Philip Schaff. These scholars began work in 1872. Any suggestion the American team had would be accepted by the British team only if 2/3 of the British team agreed. This principle was backed up by an agreement that if their suggestions were put into the appendix of the RV, the American team would not publish their ver ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Bible Student movement - The New Covenant Bible Students

In 1909, Pastor Russell more pointedly expressed that faithful Christians, as the "true church", were not being called and developed under the New Covenant, but rather that the New Covenant was future, a covenant applied to the nation of Israel. This, and controversy over other doctrines, led some to leave the movement in 1910. The result was the formation of the New Covenant Bible Students, who began to hold their yearly Christian Believers Conferences, teaching that Christians were being called and developed under the ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Shunning - Shunning in Christian denominations

Several passages in the New Testament suggest shunning as a practice of early Christians, and are cited as such by its modern-day practitioners within Christianity. As with many Biblical teachings, however, not all Christian scholars or denominations agree on this interpretation of these verses. 1 Corinthians 5:11-13: But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Restorationism - Restorationists

Restorationism draws attention to the reason it exists, which is sometimes called the Great Apostasy, or the fallen state of traditional Christianity. Because of its divisions, errors, and compromises with the world, the corrupted church fell out of line with the church founded by Jesus. If there were no apostasy-at-large and a church on the true-and-legitimate pattern was present, there would be no need for a Restoration. Thus, Restorationists can be compared to one another in their conviction that there has ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Excommunication - Christianity

Excommunication - Anathema. The biblical form of excommunication is to declare one anathema. The difference between an anathema and excommunication is that generally excommunications are pronounced by the Catholic Church, which has created a ceremony that corresponds to them. This ceremony is proper only to Bishops and other prelates, and is contained in the Pontificale Romanum, a liturgical book of the Roman Rite which contains all of the sacraments and other ceremonies a Bishop might perform. Anathemas were emp ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Restorationism - Restorationist dates for the Great Apostasy

Restorationism is often criticized for rejecting the traditions followed by the early church, but different restoration groups have treated tradition differently. While some view all the Church Fathers as unreliable witnesses to the original Apostolic Church, others find in the earliest Church Fathers proof that the early church believed and practiced as some Restorationists do, and the late Church Fathers differences as evidences of a gradual or sudden falling away. Common to all Restorationism is the belief that the Church Fathers or post-apostolic church leadership had no author ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Shunning - Shunning in the Bahá'í Faith

Members of the Bahá'í Faith are expected to shun those that have been declared Covenant-breakers by the head of their faith. These are the leaders of schismatic groups that resulted from challenges to the Bahá'í leadership, as well as those who follow them, or who refuse to shun these. Since unity is the highest value in the Bahá'í Faith, any attempt at schism by a Bahá'í is considered a spiritual sickness, and a negation of what the religion stands for.[1] People ...
