To facilitate surgery without violating their belief against transfusions, the Governing Body has set up "Hospital Liaison Committees" to enroll doctors and surgeons who will practice "bloodless surgery" for Witness patients. Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Doctrines of Jehovah's Witnesses - Religious Symbols

The group categorically rejects the use of images or icons in worship as they believe this violates Biblical prohibitions against idolatry. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that an idol is any image or symbol that is an object of intense devotion, veneration, or worship; whereas, other Christian denominations would disagree. Regarding the cross as a religious symbol, Jehovah's Witnesses cite three additional reasons why Christians should not use it as a symbol for Christianity. 1 - They consider that the instrument of Christ's ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Practices of Jehovah's Witnesses - Kingdom Halls and Assembly Halls

Jehovah's Witnesses call their meeting places "Kingdom Halls" instead of churches, to indicate that the gathering of the congregation is what is important, not the physical location itself. Another reason is that they deem the use of the term church to now be largely confusing and inaccurate because the term in its Biblical context actually refers to a gathering or a "congregation" of people and not to the meeting place or the building itself (see the etymology of the word). In gene ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Doctrines of Jehovah's Witnesses - Creation and the Flood

According to Jehovah's Witnesses, the biblical view of creation encompasses all things living and non-living and extends to the very creation of the Universe itself. They believe that Jehovah is the First Cause of creation, bringing all things into existence. They believe that Jesus (in his pre-human existence as a spirit creature) was the first direct creation of God and that, after that, Jesus was actively involved in the ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Persecution of Jehovah's Witnesses - Mob violence in the USA

Strong resentment and anger were sometimes directed at the group (then called Bible students) in the 1910s and 1920s. At the time, this was largely due to the Watch Tower Society's outspoken manner, members carrying placards outside many churches, and in the streets proclaiming the imminent destruction of church members, along with both church and government institutions if they did not flee from "false religion" was not an uncommon sight. Typical examples of the Watchtower's attitude are found in the Watch Tower Society's book publication < ...

Jehovah's Witnesses: Encyclopedia II - Organizational structure of Jehovah's Witnesses - Servants

Jehovah's Witnesses do not have the clergy-laity distinctions common among many other religious denominations. Rather they believe that according to the Bible, all of Jehovah's worshipers are ministers. Nevertheless, as a practical matter there are overseers appointed to take the lead in the ministry and the teaching in the local congregations, and to fulfill certain directorial roles. This appointment creates a distinction between the overseers and the overseen that is equivalent to a clergy-laity distinction in all but name. See also:
