Janus: Encyclopedia II - Doublespeak - Examples of doublespeak in current usage

Doublespeak is most reminiscent of Orwell's "newspeak" when it is used by a government agency to cover up something unpleasant. The government may find the need to talk about something that has negative connotations to large portions of the public, and avoids backlash by replacing the term with a new one that most people will not recognize as the same thing. Thus "area denial munitions" means "landmines", "physical persuasion" means "torture", and "operational exhaustion" means "shell shock". A stray 2,000-pound bomb causes "a significant em ...

Janus: Encyclopedia II - Ozzie Slash and Flea - Ozzie

Ozzie is a rather fat and large Mystic. He is the leader of the Mystics when young Janus arrives in a time portal after being teleported out of the Kingdom of Zeal in 12,000 B.C. From the events provided, Ozzie raised Janus and developed his magical skills. However, Janus soon became too powerful for even the great Ozzie to handle and the roles were switched: Janus became Magus and the new leader of the Mystics. Ozzie remained loyal as a war started against the Kingdom of Guardia and the human rac ...

Janus: Encyclopedia II - Neptune - Naming

Shortly after its discovery, Neptune was referred to simply as "the planet exterior to Uranus" or as "Le Verrier's planet." The first suggestion for a name came from Galle. He proposed the name Janus. In England, Challis put forth the name Oceanus, particularly appropriate for a seafaring people. In France, Arago suggested that the new planet be called Leverrier, a suggestion which was met with stiff resistance outside France. French almanacs promptly reintroduced the name Herschel for Uranus and See also:

Janus: Encyclopedia II - Future programming - Implementations

The future construct became more better known by its inclusion in programming lannguages such as MultiLisp and Act1. The use of logic variables for communication in concurrent logic programming languages is quite similar. Janus: Encyclopedia II - The Criterion Collection - Corporate history

Because it is a privately held company, there is a dearth of publicly accessible information regarding the Criterion Collection as a business, as well as its relationships with other entities. Nevertheless, what information can be gathered from media sources reveals that the Criterion Collection shares a close business relationship with Janus Films and with Home Vision Entertainment (HVE). The Criterion Collection was founded in 1984 by Robert Stein, Aleen Stein (then Robert's wife), and Roger Smith. In 1985, the Steins, William Becke ...

Janus: Encyclopedia II - American Quarter Horse - Breed History

The American colonists began, in the 1690s, to cross imported English horses with Chickasaw Ponies (which originated from Spanish and Barb stock brought over to Americas by the conquistadors). The resulting horse was small, hardy, and quick, and it was used as a work horse during the week, and a race horse on the weekend. The influence of Thoroughbreds like Janus and Matchem contributed crucial genes that developed the colonial ...

Janus: Encyclopedia II - Essential thrombocytosis - Pathophysiology

The pathologic basis for this disease is unknown. However, essential thrombosis resembles polycythemia vera in that cells of the megakaryocytic series are more sensitive to growth factors. Platelets derived from the abnormal megakaryocytes do not function properly, which contributes to the clinical features of bleeding and thrombosis. Recently, in 2005, a mutation in the JAK2 kinase (V617F) was found by multiple research groups (Baxter et al., 2005; Levine et al., 2005) to be associated with essential thrombocytosis. JAK2 is a member of the Janus kinase family. This mutation be help ...

In 1952 Merwin's first book of poetry, A Mask for Janus, was published in the Yale Younger Poets Series. W.H. Auden selected the work for that distinction. Janus: Encyclopedia II - Minor planet - Quasi-satellites and horseshoe objects

Some asteroids have unusual horseshoe orbits that are co-orbital with the Earth or some other planet. Examples are 3753 Cruithne and 2002 AA29. The first instance of this type of orbital arrangement was discovered between Saturn's moons Epimetheus and Janus. Sometimes these "horseshoe objects" temporarily become quasi-satellites for a few decades or a few hundred years, before returning to their prior status. Both Earth and Venus are known to have quasi-satellites. Such objects, if associated with Earth or Venus or even hypothetically Mercury are a special class of Aten asteroids ...
