Janus: Encyclopedia - Zündapp Janus

Zündapp Janus was the name of a microcar model made by Zündapp between 1957 and 1958. Originally Zündapp made motorcycles, but in 1954 decided to make a more weatherproof vehicle. They looked at designs from Kroboth, Brütsch, and Fuldamobil before settling for a design by Dornier. The "coming or going" design was given the name of the Roman god, Janus, usually pictured having two faces: one looks forward while the other one looks back. (January is also named after this god.) The car was powered by a mid-mounted 2-stroke single cyl ...

Janus: Encyclopedia - January 1

January 1 is the first day of the calendar year in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Here a calendar year refers to the order in which the months are displayed, January to December. The first day of the medieval Julian year was usually a day other than January 1. This day was adopted as the first day of the Julian year by all Western European countries except England between about 1450 and 1600. The Gregorian calendar as promulgated in 1582 did not specify that Janu ...

Janus: Encyclopedia II - British Rail Janus - The Janus

The Janus locomotive was of 0-6-0 wheel arrangement, diesel-electric, weighed 48 tons and had a maximum speed of 23mph. The two Rolls Royce 2xC6SFL diesel engines gave a total of 400hp. The locomotive demonstrated on British Railways was second of this type built (works number 2595/56), both of the first two locomotives being demonstrated to potential customers before going to the Appleby-Frodingham Steelworks in Scunthorpe. It is thought to have been in use there until being scrapped 1982. Eventually just short of 100 Janus locomotives were built (one even being built for use in India), some ...

Janus: Encyclopedia II - Janus moon - Name

Janus is named after Janus, the two-faced Roman god. Although the name was informally proposed soon after the initial 1966 discovery, it was not officially given this name until 1983. Epimetheus received its name at the same time. According to the OED, the adjectival form of the moon's name is Janian. ...

Janus: Encyclopedia II - Janus moon - Orbital relationship between Epimetheus and Janus

Janus and Epimetheus are "co-orbital". Janus' orbital radius from Saturn is currently 151,472 km and Epimetheus' orbital radius is 151,422 km, a separation of only 50 km. Since closer orbits have higher velocities the two moons must inevitably approach each other, and since Epimetheus' diameter is 115 km and Janus' is 178 km it would seem at first glance that a collision is also inevitable. But as the inner moon catches up with the outer moon their mutual gravitational attraction boosts the inner moon's momentum and raises its orbit, causing ...

Janus: Encyclopedia II - British Rail Janus - The Taurus

The Taurus locomotive was an 0-8-0, diesel-hydraulic, weighed 56 tons and had a maximum speed of 36mph. The two Rolls Royce 2xC8SFL diesel engines gave a total of 600hp. The transmission of this locomotive worked on a similar principle to that of the Fell diesel tested during the early 1950s. In this case, at low speeds only one engine was used, the second being engaged to increase to allow higher speeds. The maximum speed with one engine was 12mph while the minimum speed with both engines was 3.5mph. It would appear that the name came from Taurus the bull while maintaining the ‘….us’ theme of Yorkshire Engine Co ...

Janus: Encyclopedia II - Janus moon - Discovery and orbit

Janus occupies essentially the same orbit as the moon Epimetheus. This caused some confusion for astronomers, who assumed that there was only one body in that orbit, and for a long time struggled to figure out what was going on. It was eventually realised that they were trying to reconcile observations of two distinct objects as a single object. The discovery of Janus is attributed to its first observer: Audouin Dollfus, on December 15, 1966 (IAUC 1987). The new object was given the temporary designation S/1966 S 2. Previously, ...

Janus: Encyclopedia II - Door - History

The earliest records are those represented in the paintings of the Egyptian tombs, in which they are shown as single or double doors, each in a single piece of wood. In Egypt, where the climate is intensely dry, there would be no fear of their warping, but in other countries it would be necessary to frame them, which according to Vitruvius (iv. 6.) was done with stiles (sea/si) and rails (impages): the spaces enclosed being filled with panels (tympana) let into grooves made in the stiles and rails. The stiles were the vertical boards, one of ...

Janus: Encyclopedia II - Epimetheus moon - Discovery

Epimetheus occupies essentially the same orbit as the moon Janus. Astronomers assumed that there was only one body in that orbit, and accordingly had a hard time figuring out their orbital characteristics; it is obviously impossible to reconcile the observations of two distinct objects as a single object. Audouin Dollfus observed a moon on December 15, 1966, which he proposed to be named "Janus"[3]. On December 18, Richard L. Walker made a similar observation which is now credited as the discovery of Epimetheus[4]. However, at the time, it was believed that there was only one moon, unoff ...
