James Bond - Bond characters: Encyclopedia - William Haggard

William Haggard was an English writer of fictional spy thrillers set in the 1960s through the 1980s. Like C. P. Snow, he was a quintessentially British Establishment figure who had been a civil servant in India, and his books vigorously put forth his perhaps idiosyncratic points of view. The principle character in most of his novels was Colonel Charles Russell of the fictional Security Executive. During the years of the fictional spy mania initially begun by the James Bond stories Haggard was considered by most critics to be at the ve

James Bond - Bond characters: Encyclopedia II - Inspirations for James Bond - Ian Fleming

Many Ian Fleming biographers agree that James Bond is largely based on Fleming himself. The author was known for his glamorous and licentious lifestyle. Fleming has also been said to have been inspired by his contemporaries in British Intelligence during World War II. During the war Fleming was the personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence starting as a Lieutenant then rising to the rank of Commander, the same rank as James Bond throughout Fleming's series. Other incidents in Fleming's books that aren't possibly derived from the author's own life are completely fictional, pe ...

James Bond - Bond characters: Encyclopedia II - Q James Bond - Major Boothroyd

The ancestry of the Q character is rather complicated. In the Fleming novels there are frequent references to 'Q branch' and in sixth novel, Dr. No, the service armourer Major Boothroyd appears for the first time. Fleming named the character after an army officer who had written to him suggested that Bond was not using the best firearm available. Boothroyd is also referenced occasionally in the Bond novels of John Gardner, but the author preferred instead to f ...

In The World Is Not Enough an assistant to Major Boothroyd (Q) was introduced, teasingly called "R" by Bond and played by John Cleese. His real name has yet to be revealed, but he is initially credited as R in The World is Not Enough stemming from a joke in which Bond asks the elder Q: "If you're Q does that make him R?" (Cleese's character responds, "Ah yes, the legendary 007 wit. Or at least, half of it"). The character continued to be referred to as "R" in videogames pro ...

Everything or Nothing is the second Bond game played in the third-person and is the first Bond game to feature a two-player cooperative mode, however, unlike its modern predecessors, Everything or Nothing lacks a true deathmatch multiplayer mode, a popular staple in Bond games since 1997's GoldenEye 007. The game received high praise from some quarters, some critics calling it "the Bond movie for 2004" due in part to its high production values. For the first time in any James Bond game, Electronic Arts hired many ...
