Jahnavi: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Jahnavi

Jahnavi (Sanskrit) Jahnu's daughter; applied to the river Ganges. In the Mahabharata, when the Ganges came from heaven it flowed over the earth and inundated the sacrificial ground of Jahnu, who drank up its waters. He consented to discharge them from his ears, and hence the river is regarded as his daughter.

Kāyastha or Kayasth is a Hindu caste in South Asia, whose place inside the four Varnas or main castes is disputed. Chitragupta decided that his lineage would wield the pen (quill) as its weapon rather than the sword. Legend says that he is employed by Yama, the God of Death, to maintain records about every human in Mrityulok or the mortal world. Hence Kāyastha became caste of scribes. A holy river of India. The principal river given this name originates in the Himalayas, flows past Hardvar, Prayag (Allahabad), Varanasi (Banaras), and Gaya, and empties into the Bay of Bengal at Gangasagar.

 

This Ganga is said to have come from the feet of the Hindu god Vishnu and to have landed first on the matted hair of the god Shiva, where it aroused the jealousy of Shiva's wife. It is also called Bhagirathi and Jahnavi. Other Gangas include a Ganga in the sky (Akashaganga, the Milky Way), a Ganga in the underworld (Patalaganga), and numerous replicas of the Ganga on earth.
