Jackie Blanchflower: Encyclopedia II - Munich air disaster - Cause

Captain James Thain, the pilot, tried to take off twice, but both attempts were aborted due to a problem with the engines. When a third take off was attempted, at 3:04pm, the plane failed to gain adequate height and crashed into the fence surrounding the airport, then into a house, which was unoccupied at the time. Although the crash was originally blamed on pilot error, it was subsequently found to have been caused by the build-up of slush towards the ends of the runway, causing deceleration of the aircraft and preventing safe flying speed ...

Jackie Blanchflower: Encyclopedia II - Bobby Charlton - Management & Soccer Schools

He became the player manager of Preston North End, taking United and England team-mate Nobby Stiles with him as a player-coach, but Charlton was not suited to management and quit after just one season. He then spent some time playing in South Africa. In later years Charlton has been known for his successful "soccer schools" scheme, which were designed to give footballing youngsters some proper coaching during school holiday periods. Jackie Blanchflower: Encyclopedia II - Northern Ireland national football team - History

The Northern Ireland team is the successor to the all-Ireland national football team that existed before the formation of the Irish Free State (now the Republic of Ireland) in 1921. The team selected by the Irish Football Association (based in Belfast, Northern Ireland) continued to claim to represent (and pick players from) all of Ireland even after the partition. A rival Ireland team was set up by the Football Association of Ireland (based in Dublin, Irish Free State) in 1926 which also claimed to represent all of Ireland. It took u ...
