Because Lynch was elected as somewhat of a "compromise candidate" it appeared to many that he would only remain as an interim Taoiseach. This thought couldn't be further from his mind, and he outlined this intentions shortly after coming to power. John Mary Lynch was born on 15 August 1917, just yards from the famous Shandon bells and St. Anne's in Cork City.
