The Patent Commission of the U.S. was created in 1790. Its first three members were Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of War Henry Knox, and Attorney General Edmund Randolph. On July 31, 1790 inventor Samuel Hopkins of Pittsford, Vermont became the first person to be issued a patent in the United States. His patented invention was an improvement in the "making of Pot Ash by a new apparatus & process.". The earliest patent law required that ...

The Subcommittee on Investigations ordered the inquiry into the matter, which was broadcast live and on television. For the duration of the proceedings, the chair was temporarily relinquished to Karl E. Mundt (Republican, South Dakota). Acting as Special Counsel for the Army was Joseph Welch of the Boston law firm of Hale & Dorr. This was the first nationally televised congressional inquiry, and was broadcast on the new ABC and DuMont networks. The televised hear ...

ITES: Encyclopedia II - Marcus Junius Brutus - Caesar's assassination and its aftermath

A conservative by nature, Brutus never concealed his convictions. He married Porcia Catones who was his first cousin and a daughter of Cato, and wrote a text praising his deceased father-in-law's qualities. Caesar was very fond of him and respected his opinions. However, Brutus, like many other senators, was not satisfied with the state of the Republic. Caesar had been made dictator for life and approved legislation to concentrate power in his own hands. Together with his friend and brother-in-law Cassius and other men, Brutus started to con ...

ITES: Encyclopedia II - Isra and Mi'raj - Controversy over its historicity

Obviously, many non-Muslims regard the incident as implausible a priori. However, while most scholars accept that Muhammad claimed to have made this trip, a few dispute this as well. John Wansbrough (a leading exponent of extreme scepticism regarding early Islamic sources, best known for his idea that the Qur'an was compiled only 200 years after Muhammad's death), for instance, argues that the entire story of the Isra and Mir’aj constitutes later Islamic scriptural exegesis designed to explain away the vagueness of ayah 17:1 ...

ITES: Encyclopedia II - River Little Ouse - Its origin

The most distinctive feature of the headwaters of the Little Ouse and the Waveney is the valley in which they flow; the Little Ouse westwards and the Waveney, eastwards. It has a broad, fenny bottom, lies at an altitude of up to 26 metres and both rivers rise in the fen alongside the B1113 road, between South Lopham and Redgrave. (See map). The explanation of this oddity is that the valley was formed, not by these rivers but by water spilling from Lake Fenland. This was a periglacial lake of the Devensian glacial, fifteen or twenty thousand ...

ITES: Encyclopedia II - Jake LaMotta - Film about his early life and its effects

In 1980, Hollywood executives approached him with the idea of a movie about his life. The film, Raging Bull, was a huge success both for director Martin Scorsese and actor Robert De Niro, who gained about 60 pounds (27 kg) during the shooting of the film, to play the older, corpulent, broken-down LaMotta in the scenes of LaMotta's later life. The movie depicted a violent and problematic LaMotta who once even went as far as beating his own brother, manager Joey LaMotta, accusing him and his wife ...

ITES: Encyclopedia II - Jan and Dean - Jan's car wreck and its aftermath

On April 12, 1966 Jan was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident, resulting in severe head injuries. Earlier that month, Berry had separated from his girlfriend of seven years, singer-artist Jill Gibson, later a member for a short time of The Mamas and the Papas who had co-written many songs with Jan. As a result of Berry's accident, Jan & Dean did not perform again until the mid-1970s. Jan traveled a long and diffi ...

ITES: Encyclopedia II - Billboard magazine - Methodology of its charts

Currently, Billboard uses a system called Nielsen Soundscan to track sales of singles as well as different genres of albums. Essentially, it's a system that registers sales when the album or single is purchased at the cash register of SoundScan-enabled stores. Billboard also uses a system called Broadcast Data Systems or BDS, which they own as a subsidiary, to track radio airplay. Essentially, each song has something like a fingerprint. When it is played on a radio station that is contracted to use BDS, a detection is made. These detections are added up ...

ITES: Encyclopedia II - Genesis - Historical placement of its content

Based on the genealogies in Genesis and later parts of the Bible, both religious Jews and Christians have independently worked backwards to find the implied time of the Creation of the world, around the beginning of the 4th millennium BC. This dating is based on a literal reading of the creation account and the bases that the six days in which God created the heavens and the earth were 24-hour days, that Adam, Eve, and the Garden of Eden existed, and that a complete trace of events from Creation to a ...

ITES: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Shi`ites

Shi`ites [from Arab shi`a sectary]

Moslems are divided into two main groups: the Sunnites, the most numerous, who accept the orthodox tradition (sunna), basing their beliefs on the words of the Koran); and the Shi`ites who uphold `Ali as the representative of Allah, and reject the pronouncements of the other caliphs. The shi`ites are located principally in Iran, although they are represented throughout the Moslem world. They incline towards interpreting the Koran, rather than holding to the letter of the law as do the Sunnites.

ITES: Oceanography Dictionary - internal transcribed spacer, ITS

Definition and meaning of internal transcribed spacer, ITS:

internal transcribed spacer (ITS) - a sequence of RNA in a primary transcript that lies between precursor ribosomal subunits and is removed by splicing when the structural RNA precursor molecule is processed into a ribosome. These sequences are coded by ribosomal DNA. Eukaryotic organisms have two internal transcribed spacers; ITS-1 is located between the 18S gene and the 5.8S gene, and ITS-2 is located between the 5.8S and the 28S gene. Ribosomal genes and spacers occur in tandem repeats that are thousands of copies long. The ITS region is widely used in molecular phylogenetics and taxonomy
