Ion Iliescu: Encyclopedia II - Mineriad - June 1990 mineriad

In this case, the Romanian miners of Jiu Valley were called by the newly-elected power to Bucharest to end the riots that broke up on 13 June 1990. As Ion Iliescu put it, the miners were called to save the "besieged democratic regime" and restore order and democracy in Bucharest. A democracy and order disturbed by a months long demonstration labelled in the same parodic style Hooliganiad (Golaniada in Romanian and the participants were called golani (rascals) or huligani (hooligans)), happening in University Square and trying t ...

Ion Iliescu: Encyclopedia II - Michael I of Romania - Rule

A regency functioned on behalf of the 5-year-old Michael, but in 1930 Carol II suddenly returned to the country at the invitation of politicians dissatisfied with the regency, and had himself proclaimed King, designating Michael as Crown Prince. In September 1940 the pro-German régime of Marshal Ion Antonescu staged a coup against Carol, whom it considered anti-German. Antonescu had Michael proclaimed King, but as an 18-year-old he could not exercise any authority and served as a figurehead for the Antonescu regime. He already had a reputation for taciturnity. He once said to his grandmother, "I have learned not to say wha ...

Ion Iliescu: Encyclopedia II - Adevărul - History

The original paper bearing the name Adevărul was published at two different moments in Romanian history. The very first version appeared between 1888 and 1916, the second one between 1919 and 1937 (with a third, much more politicized, version between 1946 and 1951). It was a voice on the Left, at times very critical of the Romanian Monarchy, and always backing alternatives it viewed as progessive. Its very first ed ...

Ion Iliescu: Encyclopedia II - Academia Caţavencu - Current activities

Academia Caţavencu have been long-time press freedom advocates. They maintain a "press monitoring agency", a watchdog against manipulation through mass-media. During the 2004 election campaign, Academia Caţavencu published as supplements two parody issues of Scânteia (the old-time Communist Party newspaper), containing reprints of articles written by important current day politicians during the Communist era. Almost 40,000 copies were bought in bulk from newsagents, [1] along with other newspapers [2]. The alleged perpetrato ...

Ion Iliescu: Encyclopedia II - History of Romania since 1989 - 1996 - 2000

Emil Constantinescu of the Democrat Convention of Romania (CDR) won the second round of the 1996 presidential elections by a comfortable margin of 9% and thus replaced Iliescu as chief of state. (see: Romanian election, 1996) PDSR won the largest number of seats in Parliament, but was unable to form a viable coalition. Constituent parties of the CDR joined the Democratic Party (PD), the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) to form a centrist coalition government, holding 60% of the seats in ...

Ion Iliescu: Encyclopedia II - Romanian Revolution of 1989 - Bucharest

The events in Timişoara were widely reported by Radio Free Europe, Voice of America and by students returning home for Christmas holidays. There are several conflicting views on the events in Bucharest that led to the fall of Ceauşescu in 1989. One view is that a portion of the Romanian Communist Party CPEx (Political Executive Council) tried and failed to bring about a scenario similar to that in the rest of the Eastern bloc Communist countries, where the Communist leadership would resign en masse, allowing a new government ...

Ion Iliescu: Encyclopedia II - Social Democratic Party Romania - History

On April 7, 1992, the struggle for power inside the National Salvation Front (Frontul Salvării Naţionale, FSN) between the more hard-line group led by Ion Iliescu and the more reformist group led by Petre Roman resulted in the Iliescu group withdrawing from FSN and founding of the Democratic National Salvation Front (Frontul Democrat al Salvării Naţionale, FDSN), which would later become the present-day PSD. FDSN won the 1992 elections and went on to govern Romania until 1996. On July 10, 1993 it took the name of Par ...

Ion Iliescu: Encyclopedia II - Nicolae Ceauşescu - A rough sketch of Ceauşism

While the term Ceauşism became widely used inside Romania, usually as a pejorative, it never achieved status in academia. This feature can be explained taking in view the largely crude and syncretic character of the dogma. Ceauşescu attempted the inclusion of his views in mainstream Marxist theory, to which he added his belief in a "multilaterally developed socialist society" as a necessary stage between the Marxist concepts of Socialist and Communist societies (a critical view reveals that the main reason for the interval is ...

Ion Iliescu: Encyclopedia II - Corneliu Vadim Tudor - Ideology

In June 1990, with the approval and encouragement of Romanian leaders Ion Iliescu and Petre Roman, Tudor and his maître founded the National-Communist weekly România Mare ("Greater Romania"). In 1991, they founded the Greater Romania Party, the platform of which Time magazine described as "a crude mixture of anti-Semitism, racism and nostalgia for the good old days of communism." To this, one ought to add ultra-Nationalism, anti-Magyarism, anti-Gypsyism, and frequen ...

Ion Iliescu: Encyclopedia II - 1990s - Events and trends

While optimism and hopes were high following the collapse of Communism, the backlash of the Cold War's effect was only beginning, precipitating the continuation of terrorism in Third World regions that were once the frontlines for American and Soviet foreign politics, particularly in Asia. However, during the 1990s many First World economies such as the United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia, and South Korea experienced steady economic growth for nearly the entire decade. The United Kingdom, after the recession of 1991-92 and Black Wednes ...

TVR was established in 1956, and first emitted on December 31 on the same year. A second channel, TVR2, was created in the 1970s, but was suspended from 1985 until after the fall of the Communist regime. In the late 1980s, the TVR schedule was severely limited - to only about two hours per day (between 20:00 and 22:00), most of which were dedicated to the cult of personalities of Nicolae and Elena Ceauşescu; with an exception on sundays, when it w ...
