Intimacy: Encyclopedia II - Psychology of torture - The torture process

Although torture induces both physiological and psychological effects, the psychological impact is often greater and tends to remain with the subject long after the actual activity is discontinued. The process of torture is designed to invade and destroy the belief of the subject in their independence as a human being, to destroy presumptions of privacy, intimacy, and inviolability assumed by the subject, and to destroy their unspoken trust that these things can save them. Beyond merely invading the subject's mental, physical independ ...

Intimacy: Encyclopedia II - Psychology of torture - Psychological results of torture

Subjects typically oscillate between emotional numbing and highly sensitive arousal: insomnia, irritability, restlessness, and attention deficits. Recollections of the traumatic events intrude in the form of dreams, night terrors, flashbacks, and distressing associations. Intimacy: Encyclopedia II - Psychology of torture - Psychology of torture

As normal developing human beings, people internalize certain concepts needed to support their ability to face life. For example, they come to understand there are people and authorities who will support them, they psychologically become independent and individual from their peer group (individuation), they believe they have validity purpose and "a place" simply by virtue of being a human being, that they are not simply an "object", they have many life-experiences which give them pride and self-confidence, and so on. These are a very profoun ...

Intimacy: Encyclopedia II - Petting - Technique

Different animals respond well to different types of petting, even within the same species: one cat may enjoy a light scratch, just between her eyes, while another cat may demand to be kneaded like a loaf of bread. An elephant might like a stiff brush scrubbed in circles, a horse prefers a medium brush, front to back. Some animals, including many cats, seem to hate being pet in the reverse direction from the way their fur goes, so much so that for one to 'rub someone the wrong way' has become an idiomatic w ...

Intimacy: Encyclopedia II - Psychology of torture - Background

Torture is common in situations where disparities in interpersonal power and control occur. It is a well known theme in religious, political, and military histories. It is less well known in social contexts such as domestic abuse, child abuse and elder abuse. It is just beginning to become well known in sexual contexts such as rape, pedophilia, and incest. Well known or little known, torture is no less terrible to its subjects. Torture to children, in particular, induces incredible damage because, in addition to the terrible suffering ...

Intimacy: Encyclopedia II - Psychology of torture - Psychology of torturers

It was long thought that "good" people would not torture and only "bad" ones would, under normal circumstances. Research over the past 50 years suggests a disquieting alternative view, that under the right circumstances and with the appropriate encouragement and setting, most people can be encouraged to actively torture others. For more details of the psychology of torturers, rather than their subjects, and the process by which torture becomes acceptable to its practitioners ...

Intimacy: Encyclopedia II - Jody Watley - The late 90s and the Millennium

Jody Watley - Flower. After spending most of 1997 in the recording studio crafting her sixth studio album, Flower, Watley was back in early 1998 with its lead off singles "Off The Hook" and "If I'm Not In Love." In spite of both songs hitting #1 on the Billboard Dance Charts, and "Off The Hook" peaking at #23 on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart, both ultimately failed to make waves on the pop chart. Big Beat Records was absorbed into its parent label, Atlantic Records, which then shelved the album from a US re ...

Intimacy: Encyclopedia II - Triangular theory of love - Forms of romantic love

The relative emphasis of each component changes over time as an adult romantic relationship develops. Liking includes only one of the love components - intimacy. In this case, liking is not used in a trivial sense. Sternberg says that this intimate liking characterizes true friendships, in which a person feels a bondedness, a warmth, and a closeness with another but not intense passion or long-term commitment. Infatuated love consists solely of passion and is often what is felt as "love at first sight." Bu ...

Intimacy: Encyclopedia II - Pound hug - Cultural aspects

Greetings will vary from culture to culture. Certain cultures, such as the Chinese or Japanese, are seen as low-touch cultures, in which men are more likely to bow to each other. Other cultures, such as the Central Asian, the Middle Eastern, and the Mediterranean, are characterized by a marked physical intimacy between men. Still other cultures, such as the American, are an amalgam between the two, and the m ...
