This novel marks Rincewind's reappearance on the Discworld after the events of Faust Eric. The Patrician of Ankh-Morpork is sent a letter from the Agatean Empire on the Counterweight Continent (by albatross mail) commanding him to "send us the Great Wizzard". The wizards of Unseen University, after some discussion, eventually realise the spelling of Wizzard can refer to only one man - Rincewind. After using Hex to assist in performing a spell to summon Rincewind to UU, Archchancellor Ridcully convinces him to go to the A ...

Interesting Times: Encyclopedia - Agatean Empire

The Agatean Empire is a fictitous country that occupies the Counterweight Continent of Terry Pratchett's Discworld. It is the home of Twoflower and the Luggage. It is similar to feudal Japan or Imperial China, most obviously in the vast wall that surrounds it, and the belief that anyone from outside the Empire must be an invisible vampire ghost. The name is a pun on the term "Jade Empire," referring to ancient China. The Empire was founded by the Emperor One Sun Mirror thousands of years ago and until fairly recently it ...

Interesting Times: Encyclopedia - Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler

Cut Me Own Throat (C.M.O.T) Dibbler is one of the numerous bit part characters that enrich the world of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. A "merchant venturer" in Ankh-Morpork, he is most famous for selling meat by-products to unsuspecting souls. His name originates from his catchphrase 'I'll sell it for less, and that's cutting me own throat'. He has also been a "moving pictures" (movie) producer/director where his lack of scruples was entirely reminiscent of the pioneers of modern motion pictures and, similarly, the agent o ...

Interesting Times: Encyclopedia II - Discworld gods - The Old High Ones

These are beings far more powerful than gods (who are, from their point of view, only slightly more troublesome versions of human beings) who control the workings of the multiverse. There are eight of them, according to The Discworld Companion, and they are not worshipped on the Discworld, the general populace being unaware of their existence. They are only very ambiguously referred to in some of the Discworld religions and the most that Discworld s ...

Dragons are a genus of reptiles which apparently evolved on the Disc's Moon. Fauna of Discworld - Draco lunaris. Possibly the original species of dragon, these Moon Dragons inhabit the Disc's moon. They are quite similar to draco vulgaris, but have silver scales and flame from their rears. This allows them flight by means of the rocket principle. They subsist on a silvery plant which apparently covers much of the Moon and glows by means of phosphorescence, creating moonlight. This species is seen in The Last Hero. ...

Interesting Times: Encyclopedia II - Havelock Vetinari - Staying in power

While he is quite as unpopular as his predecessors, unlike them Lord Vetinari is disturbingly sane and still alive. He has achieved this by ensuring that even though all power-wielding groups in the city dislike him, they dislike each other more. He also carefully arranges matters so that a reality which includes him as Patrician is slightly better than one which does not. The Assassins' Guild no longer accepts contracts on the Patrician - he is the only person besides Samuel Vimes to have been taken off the register. He had the highest o ...

The Auditors convince a young clock maker, Jeremy Clockson, in Ankh-Morpork to build a perfect glass clock. They do not reveal that this will imprison Time (the anthropomorphic personification) and thereby freeze time (the physical quantity) on the Discworld. Naturally, Death isn't about to let that happen, but since his hands are tied he sends his granddaughter Susan to thwart them. Meanwhile, in a distant valley, a young apprentice of the History Monks, Lobsang Ludd, and his old teacher, Lu-Tze, called 'The Sweeper', hear that a gla ...

Hex has its origins in a device that briefly appeared in Soul Music, created by student wizard Skazz in the High Energy Magic building. In this form it was simply a complex network of glass tubes, containing ants. By the time of Interesting Times Hex had become a lot more complex, and was constantly reinventing itself. Part of it is now clockwork, which interfaces with the ant- ...
