Intellectual Knowledge

A selection of articles related to Intellectual Knowledge:

Not surprisingly, intellectuals commonly use allegations of anti-intellectualism as a charge against their critics. Critics of certain intellectuals in turn argue that "anti-intellectualism" is itself a loaded term. The term 'intellectual' implies knowledge, wisdom, and intelligence, and thus to be called 'anti-intellectual' can often be perceived as meaning one favours ignorance or stupidity

Jnana (Jnanam) (Sanskrit) (from the verbal root jna to know, have knowledge, understand): Intelligence, understanding, knowledge; the old philosophers said that parabrahman is not jnata (known), not jnana (knowledge), and not jneya (that which may be known), nevertheless parabrahman is the one source of which these three modes of understanding are manifestations. Jnana and vidya are closely similar, with perhaps the suggestion of intuitive intellectual cognizance expressed in jnana, and a more active and individualized activity expressed by vidya. Either word can stand for knowledge or wisdom; in theosophy jnana is often translated as innate or intuitive knowledge, and vidya as reflective or stored-up cognizance of intellectual and other values, or wisdom, though these distinctions are somewhat arbitrary

* Encyclopedia II - Anti-intellectualism - A loaded term?

Not surprisingly, intellectuals commonly use allegations of anti-intellectualism as a charge against their critics. The term 'intellectual' implies knowledge, wisdom, and intelligence, and thus to be called 'anti-intellectual' can often be perceived as meaning one favours ignorance or stupidity. Sometimes criticism of intellectuals can take the form of a specific critique of an intellectual's specific field of study or theory. Not all ' ...

* The Path of Knowledge - Jnana Yoga

Jnana yoga is the yoga of knowledge - not knowledge in the intellectual sense-but the knowledge of Brahman and Atman and the realization of their unity. Where the devotee of God follows the promptings of the heart, the jnani uses the powers of the mind to discriminate between the real and the unreal, the permanent and the transitory.

* Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Sorcerers

Sorcerers [from Latin sors lot]

Those using occult powers and arcane knowledge for evil purposes. It covers various degrees of black magic, from ignorant practitioners -- such as the followers of Voodoo -- to others who, with greater knowledge and a larger intellectual development, are often called black magicians instead of sorcerers, though these terms are virtually synonymous.

* Para Vidya, Path To Eternal Bliss

Para vidya alone can show us the path to eternal bliss. Mundane knowledge, which produces 'intellectualism"cannot confer wisdom on us. Even the most amazing of scientific and technological advances have failed to bring lasting happiness in our lives. The exponential increase in knowledge has, surprisingly, led to more conflicts and destruction.

Para vidya is transcendental knowledge, which leads to wisdom.

Apara vidya or secular knowledge merely enhances our vision of the outer world. Wisdom is perennial while knowledge is mainly informative and therefore transient. The former is stable, the latter, subject to change.

* The Eternal Query - Just Who Are We?

Erwin Schrodinger, father of quantum-wave mechanics declared that the one and only task of science is to answer the one philosophical question: 'Who are we?' In the Kathopanishad, Nachiketa requests Jamaraja: "Please give me knowledge of the Self."

Whether extrovert or introvert, for those who go deep into their respective fields of knowledge, a single, universal enigma incessantly and insistently surfaces at the very core: What is the nature of the observer of the field? And, for many scientists and intellectuals, the answer has remained elusive. In The Astonishing Hypothesis - The Scientific Search for the Soul, Nobel laureate Francis Crick admits in the very opening sentence, "The mystery of consciousness... at the present time... is far too difficult to explain."

* Vedic Astrology and Mental, Emotional and Spiritual Health

Vedic Astrology and Mental, Emotional and Spiritual Health
In order to maintain a healthy mind we must realize the true realities of life. Therefore we must consider our spiritual nature to understand the subtleties of mind, intelligence and ego. Accordingly mental, emotional and spiritual health go together and, unless you have some knowledge in this regard, you cannot stop the onslaught of negative emotions brought on by ignorance and fear. We not only need to engage ourselves in some sort of fulfilling work to occupy our minds but need to understand why we fall victim to feelings of hate, envy, greed and avarice. These emotions only serve to destroy us intellectually, psychologically, emotionally and spiritually. Why is there so much hate in the world, anyway?

* Holistic Yoga Practices For Today

The process of acquiring healthy physical, emotional and mental attitudes begins when we recognise the need to live a wholesome life. The basic principles to follow in yoga are those propounded in the classical yoga principles of Maharishi Patanjali (500 BC). We should go to a yoga school that has a long history and tradition rather than posh schools with even more flashy 'gurus' who end up doing us more harm than good. We will be able to recognise the old traditional schools from method of teaching employed, which are generally simple and direct. The emphasis should be more on an individual participant experiencing these concepts rather than gaining an intellectual understanding or knowledge.
