Inspirational: Encyclopedia II - Treemonisha - Inspiration

Joplin's desire in writing Treemonisha was to make it both serious, like the European opera, as well as entertaining, drawing on the ragtime idiom only in the dance episodes of the story [15]. There has been speculation that the inspiration for Treemonisha may have come from Joplin's second wife, Freddie Alexander [16]. Like the title c ...

Inspirational: Encyclopedia II - The Terminator - Inspirations

Some aspects of the story were sufficiently similar to two episodes of the TV series The Outer Limits — both episodes written by Harlan Ellison — that Ellison pursued legal action against Cameron. Cameron settled out of court and acknowledged Ellison's work in the film's credits. The episodes in question were called "Soldier" (which involves a specially-trained man sent back in time to assassinate a rival) and "Demon With A Glass Hand" (concerning a time traveler who suffers memory loss and relies on a computer chip implanted in h ...

Inspirational: Encyclopedia II - Deadpool - Inspiration

Liefeld's critics point out the number of similarities between Deadpool and Deathstroke the Terminator, a character created for DC Comics' Teen Titans by George Pérez in the 1970s. Both characters' costumes share similar themes, both are mercenaries who use similar weaponry, and (most tellingly) Deathstroke's real name is Slade Wilson, while Deadpool's was originally given as Wade Wilson. Deadpool's relationship with Siryn also mirrors Deathstroke's relationship with Terra. Additionally, Deadpool routinely clashes with X-Force, a group of teenage superheroes, which is not unlike Deathstroke clashing with the Teen Titan ...

Inspirational: Encyclopedia II - Rohan - Inspiration

Several aspects of Rohan's culture and history seem to be inspired by both Goths, Scandinavians and the medieval Anglo-Saxons. Just like the Germanic Ostrogoths, Rohirric culture was a mounted culture. It had separated from the Northmen, moved south, and had settled in close proximity with a civilisation. In the Goths' case it was the Byzantine Empire and in the case of the Rohirrim, it was Gondor. Especially Hervarar saga, with its Mirkwood, Gothic horsemen and shieldmaidens, appears to have inspired Tolkien when creating the Rohirrim, although he exchanged the Gothic tongue with the Anglo-Saxon. The song is about Hernán Cortés, conquistador (conqueror) who conquered Mexico for Spain in the 1500s. The song also references Aztec ruler Moctezuma II and other events that occur in the Spanish conquest of the New World. The song seems to stress the beauty and peaceful nature of the Aztec people. Inspirational: Encyclopedia II - Inspirations for James Bond - Ian Fleming

Many Ian Fleming biographers agree that James Bond is largely based on Fleming himself. The author was known for his glamorous and licentious lifestyle. Fleming has also been said to have been inspired by his contemporaries in British Intelligence during World War II. During the war Fleming was the personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence starting as a Lieutenant then rising to the rank of Commander, the same rank as James Bond throughout Fleming's series. Other incidents in Fleming's books that aren't possibly derived from the author's own life are completely fictional, pe ...

Inspirational: Encyclopedia II - A Contract with God - Inspirations

In the introduction, Eisner cited as inspiration the 1930s books of Lynd Ward, who produced complete novels in woodcuts. "One of these books, Frankenstein, fell into my hands in 1938," two years before Eisner's acclaimed newspaper-supplement comic book. The Spirit debuted, "and it had an influence on my thinking thereafter. I consider my efforts in this area attempts at expansion or extension of Ward's original premise." The book's genesis was twofold. The first inspiration, Eisner said, came after he'd attended his firs ...

Inspirational: Encyclopedia II - Hex Discworld - Inspiration

The inspiration for Hex, which evolves through seemingly unexplainable upgrades like extra cheese, a CWL (Clothes Wringer from the Laundry, for crunching numbers and other things) the FTB protocol (Fluffy Teddy Bear) and "small religious pictures" (icons), came from Pratchett`s own early experiments with unfathomable upgrades on his ZX-81. The name is a play on the multiple meanings of the word "hex"; a hex can be a "magical spell" and also an abbreviation of "hexadecimal". It may ...
