The song is about Hernán Cortés, conquistador (conqueror) who conquered Mexico for Spain in the 1500s. The song also references Aztec ruler Moctezuma II and other events that occur in the Spanish conquest of the New World. The song seems to stress the beauty and peaceful nature of the Aztec people. Inspiration: Encyclopedia II - Treemonisha - Inspiration

Joplin's desire in writing Treemonisha was to make it both serious, like the European opera, as well as entertaining, drawing on the ragtime idiom only in the dance episodes of the story [15]. There has been speculation that the inspiration for Treemonisha may have come from Joplin's second wife, Freddie Alexander [16]. Like the title c ...

Inspiration: Encyclopedia II - Hex Discworld - Inspiration

The inspiration for Hex, which evolves through seemingly unexplainable upgrades like extra cheese, a CWL (Clothes Wringer from the Laundry, for crunching numbers and other things) the FTB protocol (Fluffy Teddy Bear) and "small religious pictures" (icons), came from Pratchett`s own early experiments with unfathomable upgrades on his ZX-81. The name is a play on the multiple meanings of the word "hex"; a hex can be a "magical spell" and also an abbreviation of "hexadecimal". It may ...

Inspiration: Encyclopedia II - Kray twins - Inspiration

They were the subject of a feature film, The Krays (1990), in which they were played by Gary and Martin Kemp of the band Spandau Ballet. There are many books about their reign of terror, amongst the most critically acclaimed is The Profession of Violence by John Pearson. They were also the inspiration behind the Monty Python "Piranha Brothers" sketch. This sketch contained frighteningly little exaggeration; even the tale of nailing someone to the floor has its roots in the murder of Jack "the Hat" McVitie, who was ...

Inspiration: Encyclopedia II - Deadpool - Inspiration

Liefeld's critics point out the number of similarities between Deadpool and Deathstroke the Terminator, a character created for DC Comics' Teen Titans by George Pérez in the 1970s. Both characters' costumes share similar themes, both are mercenaries who use similar weaponry, and (most tellingly) Deathstroke's real name is Slade Wilson, while Deadpool's was originally given as Wade Wilson. Deadpool's relationship with Siryn also mirrors Deathstroke's relationship with Terra. Additionally, Deadpool routinely clashes with X-Force, a group of teenage superheroes, which is not unlike Deathstroke clashing with the Teen Titan ...

Inspiration: Encyclopedia II - Battle of Thermopylae - Inspiration

The legend of Thermopylae, as told by Herodotus, has it that Sparta consulted the Oracle at Delphi before setting out to meet the Persian army. The Oracle is said to have made the following prophecy in hexameter verse: O ye men who dwell in the streets of broad Lacedaemon! Either your glorious town shall be sacked by the children of Perseus, Or, in exchange, must all through the whole Laconian country Mourn for the loss of a king, descendant of great Heracles. He cannot ...

Inspiration: Encyclopedia II - Rohan - Inspiration

Several aspects of Rohan's culture and history seem to be inspired by both Goths, Scandinavians and the medieval Anglo-Saxons. Just like the Germanic Ostrogoths, Rohirric culture was a mounted culture. It had separated from the Northmen, moved south, and had settled in close proximity with a civilisation. In the Goths' case it was the Byzantine Empire and in the case of the Rohirrim, it was Gondor. Especially Hervarar saga, with its Mirkwood, Gothic horsemen and shieldmaidens, appears to have inspired Tolkien when creating the Rohirrim, although he exchanged the Gothic tongue with the Anglo-Saxon. Inspiration: Encyclopedia II - Night Lords - Inspiration

The backstory and appearance of the Night Lords, in particular the story of Night Haunter, appears to show a 'dark alternative' to many superhero and crime fighter stories, namely that of Batman. Certain elements of the classic tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde can also be recognized in the story of Kurze/Night Haunter. Konrad Kurze may be an amalgamation of Joseph Conrad (author of Heart of Darkness, upon which much of Kurze's story seems based) and Colonel Kurtz, a rogue officer and 'murderer' from the movie Apocalypse Now (basically Heart of Darkness set during the Vietnam War); M'Shen (the assassin) resembles Martin Sheen ...
