Inner Self or Higher Self - N

Refers to the inner divine nature possessed by human beings. All people are said to possess an inner self, though not all are aware of it.

The mysteries of the universe fascinate every human being. As we observe its manifold phenomena, we marvel at how this entire process of creation came about and wonder if we can ever fully understand what it is all about. We see the innumerable stars in the night sky, and we want to discover those distant worlds. When we see a bird flying in the sky so effortlessly, we too want to soar high.

Every soul that is currently experiencing life on any level begins and ends as a whole. Our essence - the very core of our spiritual being - remains One with God. We always have been, and always will be, a part of Ôthe whole' that is the God- consciousness level.

Our soul essence, which began as whole, remains whole throughout the soul growth process, and will still be whole when the growth process has been completed and we no longer leave the whole to pursue our own life studies. It is not that we, as spiritual beings in physical form, must learn something new in order to become whole, regardless of what aspect of our growth we may be working on. It is not that we need to make a 360 degree change in direction from the way we are living our lives now.

The outer is always a reflection of the inner. In silence and solitude the seeker makes a concerted effort to fill himself with the highest and most positive of energies Ñ and then carries that holy space around him wherever he goes. In spreading serene and tranquil vibrations a seeker is serving the world. Sathya Sai Baba says: ÒThere are many ways to serve the world. You can serve, if not actively, then at least by your serenity. Everyone need not do all things. Only a small minority can delight in serenity and remain still. God has ruled it so; otherwise how could the world function? If stillness be your destiny, dare to be so...Ó

We're evolving. Our perspective is changing. When events come into our reality, we're looking at them with more loving hearts. Understanding and compassion are replacing judgment and condemnation. Yet, there are still souls on this Earth who see things very narrowly and demand punishment for anyone who steps outside the prescribed mold.

There exists a misconception in the field of western psychology, that one who is self-centred, turns out to be selfish. Spirituality or the goal of self-realisation is perceived as creating self-engrossed and selfish people who vitiate the character of society.

Self-realisation may mean self-engrossment but a self-engrossed person cannot be selfish; these are two different things. A selfish person does not know his inner self. There is an inverse relation between selfishness and self-realisation. The higher the degree of self-realisation, the lesser the selfishness.

 Most of the time, we take a longer and more involved "route" to fulfillment than we need to, because we tend to focus on working toward our goals through physical action rather than manifesting them through inner vision. When we employ the law of attraction and focus our full attention on what we desire, we fuel the creation of what we want in our lives. The more we focus on a particular goal, the stronger its potential becomes. Through repeated thought or focus, we actually create a thought form that becomes self-sustaining.

To find peace in this life, it is essential to walk the walk, facing what you would rather not face, but doing so in faith. Often what you face changes its countenance completely in the light of the faith you have in the Divine Essence within you. Situations that are faced with Divine peace radiating from the center change both in perception and hence reality. I am not one to confront, but I have confronted my own fears and found little to fear.

In a conversation with his consort Parvati, Shiva is believed to have said that through self-knowledge, one can attain salvation. People are born as human beings due to their past good samskaras, but to attain liberation they will have to attain self-knowledge.

In ancient times, Parvati symbolised the spirit of enquiry. She would pose questions to Shiva, and Shiva's answers provided deep insight into the nature of spirituality. Parvati's questions are collectively known as the Nigama shastra. Shiva's answers are philosophical; they are also of great practical value.

Why do children refer to themselves by name rather than in the first person singular? If you were disembodied in one location and reconstructed in another, would you still be yourself?

What about that tune you were humming when you morphed? We may still be a long way from Star Trek, but scientists in Australia have recently managed to teleport a beam of light. 'I' has literally been the bugbear of religion, philosophy and science, across all cultures. Conceptions of the self invariably lead us down slippery slopes of exploration into the nature of identity, and possibly ethnicity.

A human being is not a scarecrow with a head and body full of straw. A human being is an embodiment and channel of God's light and power. Yet there are times when confidence runs low, and we do not feel quite up to the mark. While this happens to the best of us at times, some people who live by a defeatist attitude all the time. This is not just undesirable but detrimental to one's psychological and spiritual growth.

The important point to be noted is that it is changeable.

Spirituality is man’s realisation of the spirit. According to advaita , the non-dualistic philosophy of Vedanta , this spirit, which is also called the Brahman , created this entire universe through matter and energy.

All objects are the outcome of one primal matter. All natural forces like gravitation, and thoughts and feelings on the consciousness level, are the outcome of a primal energy called prana .

The sense of "I" pertains to the person. When a man knows his true self for the first time, something else arises from the depths of his being and takes possession of him.

That something is beyond mind and body; it is infinite, divine, eternal. Some people call it the kingdom of heaven, others call it the soul and still others nirvana . Hindus call it moksha or liberation.

You may give it what name you like but when it happens, a man has truly found himself. The recognition of pure being - the absolute - is the supreme and ultimate truth.

The mind as a separate live entity does not exist, for it is an instrument in the hand of God. The only thing that remains is 'Being', which covers both existence and non-existence, which is beyond words or ideas. Pure awareness dawns through an understanding of one's own nature. The sage's instruction demands no strenuous effort either through physical rigour or austere practices such as chanting.

The nature of the mind is to accumulate. A gross mind wants to accumulate things; an evolved mind wants to accumulate knowledge. When emotion becomes dominant, it wants to accumulate people.

The mind’s basic nature is to accumulate. The mind is a gatherer - always wanting to gather something. The mind of a person on the spiritual path starts accumulating 'spiritual’ wisdom. Maybe it starts gathering the guru’s words but until one goes beyond the need to accumulate - whether it is food, things, people, knowledge or wisdom - it does not matter what you accumulate.

True realisation takes place on knowing and seeing God in His transcendental form. It is a metaphysical experience within the human body. The manifestation of inherent divinity is in reality the revelation of the divine self of man. This is not different from the Supreme Self that permeates even the tiniest particle in the universe. It is accessible to all human beings.
