Ingmar Bergman: Encyclopedia II - Ingmar Bergman - Biography and style characteristics

Born in Uppsala, Sweden, to a Lutheran minister of Danish descent, Bergman grew up surrounded by religious imagery and discussion. Bergman attended the Stockholm University and became interested in theater, and later in cinema. His films usually deal with existential questions about mortality, loneliness, and faith; they are also usually direct and not overtly stylized. Chaos is about two teenagers who go to a rave in the woods to score some ecstasy, and are then raped and murdered by Chaos, the film's titular character, and his two accomplices. This movie is extremely reminiscent of Wes Craven's Last House on the Left, itself a remake of Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring. However the director has denied any connection to these two movies, and neither Craven nor Bergman were given a ...

Ingmar Bergman: Encyclopedia II - Die Zauberflöte - Adaptations

It is one of the most frequently performed German language operas, and the libretto has also been translated for performance in numerous other languages. In Trollflöjten, Ingmar Bergman's 1975 highly acclaimed film version, the opera is sung in Swedish, although the sound was not actually recorded in synch with the photography. Bergman daringly made a major change in the plot: Sarastro is Pamina's father, and has a good claim, morally and legally, to her custody. The Three Boys introduce themselves, instead of being introduced by the Queen's Three Ladies. Thus, in Bergman's version it is obvious from the first tha ...

Ingmar Bergman: Encyclopedia II - Culture of Sweden - Film

Swedish cinema is one of the most widely-known national cinemas in the world. This is much thanks to its early days. Sweden had a large scale film industry that spewed out low-quality movies every so often, just like Hollywood. Soon, however, some quality was discovered in people like Mauritz Stiller and Victor Sjöström, who eventually sought fame in Hollywood. Ingmar Bergman, whose father was a harsh vicar, had his share of the dogmatic protestantism which outlined Sweden in the 19th century. His life was filled with shame and dece ...

Ingmar Bergman: Encyclopedia II - British Board of Film Classification - Attitudes to censorship

Historically the Board has faced strong criticism for an over-zealous attitude in censoring film. Prior to the liberalising decade of the 1960s, films were routinely and extensively censored as a means of social control. For example, Rebel Without a Cause was cut in order to reduce the "possibility of teenage rebellion". Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night was cut to remove "overtly sexual or provocative" language. The BBFC's attitude moved extensively towards liberalisation during the 1960s - concentrating on cens ...
