ARTICLES RELATED TO Infectious diseases | | | | Infectious diseases: Encyclopedia II - Infectious disease - BasicsInfectious diseases are mostly caused by tiny microorganisms, often called microbes, that are invisible to the naked eye. Microbes that cause illness are also known as pathogens. The most common pathogens are various bacteria and viruses, though a number of other microorganisms, including some kinds of fungi and protozoa, also cause disease. An infectious disease is termed contagious if it is e ...

 | | | Infectious diseases: Encyclopedia II - Infectious disease - Diagnosis and therapyThe field of infectious diseases also occupies itself with the diagnosis and therapy of infection.
Infectious disease - Diagnosis.
Diagnosis is initially by medical history and physical examination, and imaging (such as X-rays), but the principal tool in infectious disease is the microbiological culture. In a culture, a growth medium is provided for a particular agent. After inoculation of a specimen of diseased fluid or tissue onto the medium, it is determined whether bacterial growth occurs. This works for a numb ...

 | | | Infectious diseases: Encyclopedia - AIDS reappraisalThe AIDS reappraisal movement (or AIDS dissident movement) is a loosely-connected group of activists, journalists, citizens, scientists, researchers, and doctors who deny, challenge, or question, in various ways, the prevailing scientific consensus that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the sole cause of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Their challenges often take one or more of the following forms:
HIV does not exist
HIV is a harmless retrovirus
HIV does exist, and might ...

Most definitions other than the 1991 UK "Oxford", require a number of features, the most common being severe mental and physical depletion, which according to the 1994 Fukuda definition is "unrelieved by rest", and is usually made worse by even trivial exertion (controver ...

 | | | Infectious diseases: Encyclopedia II - Infectious salmon anemia - Spread of the diseaseIn the autumn of 1984, a new disease was observed in Atlantic salmon being farmed along the southwest coast of Norway. The disease, which was named Infectious salmon anemia, spreadd slowly. By June 1988 it had become sufficiently widespread and serious to require the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to declare it a notifiable disease.
In the summer of 1996, a new disease appeared in Atlantic salmon being farmed in New Brunswick, Canada. The death rate of the fish on affected farms was very high and, following exte ...
