Indian philosophy: Encyclopedia II - Culture of Asia - Nationalities and ethnic groups

There are an abundance of ethnic groups throughout Asia, with adaptations to the climate zones of Asia, which can be arctic, subarctic, temperate, subtropical or tropical. Indian philosophy: Encyclopedia II - Culture of Asia - Architecture

Until contact with European influence, some cultures would build renewable buildings. For example, in Japan, the temples of Kyoto and Nara might be over 1,000 years old in style, but be completely rebuilt, in the same style, every few generations or so. The primary reason for this was that the materials might be wood and thatch rather than stone and tile. Other cultures might build from stone, but the jungles and forests might overgrow the buildings, as in Angkor Wat. ...

Indian philosophy: Encyclopedia II - Jainism - Universal History and Jain Cosmology

According to Jain beliefs, the universe was never created, nor will it ever cease to exist. It is eternal but not unchangeable, because it passes through an endless series of cycles. Each of these upward or downward cycles is divided into six world ages (yugas). The present world age is the fifth age of one of these "cycles", which is in a downward movement. These ages are known as "Aaro" as in "Pehela Aara" or First Age, "Doosra Aara" or Second Age and so on. The last one is the "Chhatha Aara" or Sixth Age. ...

Indian philosophy: Encyclopedia II - Hindu philosophy - Hindu Philosophy: The Six Main Schools of Thought

The philosophic and theological diversity of Hinduism is limitless, being nurtured by the fundamentally eclectic and liberal universalism that is its defining characteristic. It is impossible to summarize all the schools of thought and inquiry produced or harboured over the millennia by the peoples of India. Some of the more ancient and long-established philosophies are elaborated upon below, all of which accept the Veda ...

Indian philosophy: Encyclopedia II - Ishopanishad - A most powerful profile of the Self, in all of Upanishads

“The Self pervades all. Radiant is He, bodiless, without scar of imperfection, without bone or flesh, pure, untouched by evil. The Seer, the Thinker, the One who is above all, the Self-Existent – he it is that has established perfect order among objects and beings from beginningless time”. This is Verse #8. But the English translation does not do justice to the original. Each word in this verse is a profound commentary on the Ultimate. The very first word paryagaat has in it two words pari, indicating omnipresence ...

Indian philosophy: Encyclopedia II - Lev Shestov - Philosophy

Lev Shestov - The Philosophy of Despair. Shestov's philosophy is, at first sight, not a philosophy at all: it offers no systematic unity, no coherent set of propositions, no theoretical explanation of philosophical problems. Most of Shestov's work is fragmentary: with regard to the form (he often used aphorisms), the style (which is more web-like than linear, and more explosive than argumentative) as well as to the content. He seems to contradict himself on every page, and even seeks the paradox. This is b ...
