Hinduism Relationship with Islam and Christianity
The propagators of both Christianity and Islam have been doing a
great service to Hinduism for the last several centuries, with their vehement
criticism born out of their profound ignorance of Hinduism and their
condescending sympathy for the natives. When they set foot on the Indian soil
in the medieval period, they made every possible effort to declare Hinduism as
a Satanic cult and a religion of the Brahmins in an attempt to draw converts
from lower castes, ignoring its philosophical depths and its true character.
Unknowingly, they helped Hinduism by forcing the Hindus of medieval and British
India to become more defensive, resolute and determined to safeguard their own
religion.

| | | | | | India: Hindu view on Science, Knowledge and EducationHindu
view on Science, Knowledge and Education
Hindu scriptures recognize two types of knowledge: the lower
knowledge and the higher knowledge. Knowledge of the rites and rituals and
scholarly study of scriptures is considered to be lower knowledge, while higher
knowledge is the knowledge of Atman and Brahman gained through personal
experience or self realization. Of the two, the Higher Knowledge alone is true,
because it liberates the individuals from the cycle of births and deaths.

| | | | India: Atheism is a Truly Divine
ScienceAtheism is a Truly Divine Science
In 'The Song Divine', Krishna
classifies nature as material nature and supernature. He says that supernature
is incomprehensible to people who are not in tune with the subtlety of
infinity. We think we choose to live, but the fact is we have no independent
will to be born. Beyond food, sex and territory, animals are not aware of any
other reality; they also do not have any aspirations towards immortality. Since
there is no fear or idea of death in their lives, they have no concept of God
or codified system of philosophy. They live by instinct and die without seeking
to prolong their lives.

| | | | India: Hinduism DharmaDharma
Dharma is a very complicated word, for which there is no
equivalent word in any other language, including English. Dharma actually means
that which upholds this entire creation. It is a Divine law that is inherent
and invisible, but responsible for all existence. Dharma exists in all planes,
in all aspects and at all levels of creation. In the context of human life,
dharma consists of all that an individual undertakes in harmony with Divine
expectations and his own inner spiritual aspirations, actions that would ensure
order and harmony with in himself and in the environment in which he lives.

Hindu MarriagesHinduism and Marriage: Hindu Marriages
According
to Hinduism, marriage between two souls is a very sacred affair that stretches
beyond one life time and may continue up to at least seven lives. A husband and
wife chose to come together more due to spiritual reasons than sexual, though
they may not be mentally aware of the reasons for their decision to come
together.

| | | | India: Tension of
Opposites Central to ExistenceJainism: Tension of Opposites
Central to Existence
According to Acharya Mahaprajna, opposition is
a fundamental rule for existence. "There is no type of existence in which
opposites do not co-exist. In a sense, existence may also be defined as the
coming together of opposites. It is the principle of the quest for unity
between two apparently different characteristics of a substance. It tries to
point out that the characteristics which differences have, also have an
identicality. Reconciliation, which is a principle of anekant
, comes about only with the recognition of the identity principle.''

Three months after the passing of Gautama
Buddha, The First Council was held at Rajagaha by his immediate disciples who had attained Arahantship
(Enlightenment). Maha Kassapa, the most respected and elderly monk, presided at the
Council. Only two sections the Dhamma and the Vinaya were recited
at the First Council. All Arahants unanimously agree that no disciplinary rule laid down
by the Buddha should be changed, and no new ones should be introduced. At this
point, no conflict about what the Buddha taught is known to have occurred, so
the teachings were divided into various parts and each was assigned to an elder
and his pupils to commit to memory. These groups of people often cross-checked
with each other to ensure that no omissions or additions were made.

| | | | | India: Ayurveda and Herbal MedicineAyurveda and Herbal Medicine
Today, you
may think in this technologically advanced society, (as I sit by my computer
writing this, and you sit by yours reading it) there are a whole range of
patented chemical drugs tailored for all ailments, so why use herbal medicines?
Herbs are as effective for healing today as they were
in our grandmothers' day, and for thousands of years before that. We may live
in a very different world today but the human body hasn't changed, in fact it's
often struggling to cope with ifs new modern environment.

Between Science SpiritScience and Spirituality: Symbiosis
Between Science & Spirit
Some years ago, I called upon the
great scientist Prof S Chandrasekhar in Chicago and asked him how seers of the Vedas
and Upanishads had two astounding insights that have
emerged in modern science only recently.
The first is the concept of anantakoti
brahmanda , endless universes. The second is the concept of vast
aeons of time through which creation passes, much like the ancient belief that
a single day of Brahma is 4.32 million human years long, so that his one year
corresponds roughly to the age of planet earth. When I suggested that perhaps
this knowledge came to seers in enhanced states of consciousness, Prof
Chandrasekhar seemed to agree.

KaliyaKrishna and Kaliya: Good fights
Evil - Krishna and Kaliya
It is a universal law: If we have
ego, we will suffer. If we are arrogant, again, we will suffer till we are
forced to surrender. The subduing of Kaliya the serpent by Krishna illustrates
this.
The tenth canto of the Srimad Bhagvatam recounts the
Kaliya daman lila performed by Krishna. Kaliya was a venomous serpent that
lived in the Yamuna river. One summer Krishna's cowherd friends fainted and
died when they drank water from the Yamuna. Kaliya had contaminated the river
so much that vapour from the river was lethal enough to kill birds flying
across.

| | | | India: The Three Jewels in BuddhismBuddhism Beliefs: The Three Jewels in Buddhism
Buddhists seek refuge in what are often
referred to as the Three Jewels, Triple Gem or Triple Jewel. These are the Buddha, the Dharma (or Dhamma), and the "noble" (Sanskrit: arya) Sangha or community of monks and nuns who have become
enlightened. While it is impossible to escape one's karma or the effects caused by previous
thoughts, words and deeds, it is possible to avoid the suffering that comes
from it by becoming enlightened. In this way, dharma offers a refuge. Dharma, used in the sense of the Buddha's
teachings, provides a raft and is thus a temporary refuge while entering and
crossing the river. However, the real refuge is on the other side of the river.
