In Your Honor: Encyclopedia II - Nirvana band - After Cobain's death

Several Nirvana albums have been released since Cobain's death. The first came in November of 1994 with the release of the band's subdued and eerily morbid performance for MTV Unplugged, Unplugged in New York. This album included guest appearances by members of the Meat Puppets, as well as cover versions of songs by the Meat Puppets, Leadbelly, The Vaselines, and David Bowie. Two weeks after the release of Unplugged in New York, a video compilation of Nirvana performances, titled Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!, was rel ...

In Your Honor: Encyclopedia II - Foo Fighters - History

Foo Fighters began as a studio solo project for Grohl while he was a member of the hugely popular group Nirvana. Unbeknownst to most of Nirvana's fanbase, Grohl had gradually written a stockpile of songs that he had held back from the band for fear of ruining their chemistry. Following Kurt Cobain's death, Grohl entered Robert Lang's Studio in Seattle with friend/producer Barrett Jones to put many of his new and old songs to tape. With the exception of a guitar part on "X-Static" by Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs, Grohl played every i ...

In Your Honor: Encyclopedia II - John Paul Jones musician - Led Zeppelin

During his time in the session world, Jones often crossed paths with fellow session man, guitarist Jimmy Page, who himself left the session world for The Yardbirds in June 1966. In 1967 Jones contributed to Yardbirds Little Games album; the following winter, during the sessions for Donovan's The Hurdy Gurdy Man, Jones inquired about joining Page's post-Yardbirds band. Later that year, as Chris Dreja had decided to leave Page's post-Yardbirds group and take up photography, Jones was Page's first choice for bass player in The New ...

In Your Honor: Encyclopedia II - Dave Grohl - Foo Fighters

Following Cobain's death in April of 1994, Grohl retreated, unsure of where to go and what to do with himself. Initially, Grohl believed his future might be in drumming for other bands, and took a brief turn with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, including a memorable performance on Saturday Night Live. The band asked him to join permanently, but Grohl realized that his future lay elsewhere. Grohl decided to schedule studio time, again at Robert Lang's Studio, and quickly recorded a fifteen-track demo. With the exception of a single gu ...

DualDiscs appear to be based on double-sided DVD technology such as DVD-10, DVD-14 and DVD-18 except that DualDisc technology replaces one of the DVD sides with a CD. The discs are made by fusing together a standard 0.6 mm-thick DVD layer (4.7-gigabyte storage capacity) to a 0.9 mm-thick CD layer (60-minute or 525-megabyte storage capacity), resulting in a 1.5 mm-thick double-sided hybrid disc that contains CD con ...

In Your Honor: Encyclopedia II - Nirvana band - In Utero

For 1993's In Utero, the band brought in producer Steve Albini, perhaps best known for his work on the Pixies album Surfer Rosa. The sessions with Albini were productive and notably quick: the initial version of the album was recorded and mixed in two weeks, a far cry from the months spent recording and mixing Nevermind. Bringing in Albini appeared to be a deliberate move on Nirvana's part to give the album a rawer, more unpolished sound, as if the band wanted to alienate or distance some of their new "mainstream" ...

In Your Honor: Encyclopedia II - Nirvana band - Early years

Cobain and Krist Novoselic met in 1985. Both were fans of The Melvins, and both were interested in forming a band. In the initial months, the pair worked with several drummers, including Aaron Burckhard and Dale Crover of The Melvins, who played on their first demos. At the same time, the band went through a series of names, including Skid Row, Pen Cap Chew, and Ted Ed Fred, before finally settling on Nirvana in February of 1988. A couple of months later, the band ...

In Your Honor: Encyclopedia II - Nirvana band - Nevermind

Following repeated recommendation by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, David Geffen signed Nirvana to DGC Records in 1990 and the band began recording their first album for a major label. The result, Nevermind, is now widely regarded as a classic. For the album, the band decided to continue working with Vig. Rather than recording at Vig's Madison studio as they had in 1990, the band shifted to Sound City Studios in Los Angeles. For two months, the band worked through a variety of songs in their catalog. Some of the songs, including "In ...

In Your Honor: Encyclopedia II - Dave Grohl - Early life

When Grohl was a young child, his family relocated from Ohio to Washington, DC. Three years later, his parents divorced, and Grohl grew up living with his mother. At the age of twelve, Grohl began tinkering with the guitar. He started with lessons, but eventually grew tired of them, and began to play in bands with friends. A year later, a summer stay at his cousin's house spawned Grohl's interest in punk rock. Grohl's cousin Tracy took him to numerous punk shows during that su ...

A few months later, Scream unexpectedly disbanded following the departure of its bass player, and Grohl placed a phone call to Osborne for advice. Knowing how much Cobain and Novoselic liked Grohl's drumming, Osborne gave Grohl Novoselic's phone number. Novoselic invited Grohl up to Seattle, where Grohl attended Nirvana's infamous show at the Motor Sports Garage, the one Nirvana show that featured Dan Peters on drums. (Grohl admitted to Rolling Stone in 2005 that he spent most of Nirvana's set outside talking to a friend.) Grohl subsequently auditioned for the ban ...

At the age of sixteen, Grohl scored an audition with local DC favorites Scream to fill the vacancy left by the departure of drummer Kent Stax. To Grohl's surprise, the band asked him to join. After waffling for a brief period, Grohl accepted the offer. Not long after, he dropped out of high school to play drums full-time. Over the next four years, Grohl toured extensively with the band, recording a couple of live albums and one studio album, Fumble, on which Grohl penned and sang ...

In the years following Nirvana's disbanding, both of its surviving members have remained active musically.
