Illyria: Encyclopedia II - Illyria - Settlement of Proto-Illyrian tribes

Some archaeologists propose that the Proto-Illyrians settled in what would become Illyria as early as the Early Bronze Age, and presumably soon mingled with the previous non-Indo-European inhabitants. This mixture would eventually result in the formation of the Illyrian tribes who inhabited Illyria in the Classical period---the Autariatae, Dassaretae, Chelidones, Taulanti, etc.---who were kin to tribes further north, also ...

Illyria: Encyclopedia - Dalmatia

Dalmatia (Croatian Dalmacija, Italian Dalmazia) is a region on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, (mostly) in modern Croatia, spreading between the island of Rab in the northwest and the Bay of Kotor in the southeast. The inner Dalmatia (Dalmatinska Zagora) is fifty kilometers inland in the north but narrows to just a few kilometers wide in the south. Croatian Dalmatia is currently composed of four counties, the capital cities of which are Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Dubrovnik. Other larger cities in Dalmatia include Biograd, Kaštela, Sinj, Solin, Omiš, Knin, Metkovi ...

Illyria: Encyclopedia II - Illyrians - Origins

The Illyrians are considered to have spoken languages belonging to a branch of Indo-European known as Illyrian. A school of scholars maintains the theory of an Illyrian invasion, which involves a great movement of Illyrian tribes from the lowlands of central Europe (modern Hungary), towards South Eastern Europe and the Balkan peninsula. The Illyrian invasion is estimated to have occurred around the 13th century BC. The numerous Thracian names in Illyria have lead many scholars to believe that the region was originally inhabited by Thr ...

Illyria: Encyclopedia II - Dalmatia - History

Dalmatia is a region with a long history. Its name is probably derived from the name of an Illyrian tribe called the Dalmatae which lived in the area of the eastern Adriatic coast in the 1st millenium BC. It was part of the Illyrian kingdom between the 4th century BC until the Illyrian Wars in the 220s BC when it was conquered by the Roman Republic. The Dalmatians rebelled once again in 180 BC, but were again subdued in 168 BC. Dalmatia then became part of the Roman province of Illyricum. In 9 AD, the Dalmatians raised the last in a s ...

Illyria: Encyclopedia II - Illyrian languages - Language affinity

Further than belonging to the Indo-European language family, probably as a centum language, the relation of Illyrian to other ancient and modern languages remains unclear because no writings in Illyrian have been found. Today, the main source of authoritative information about the Illyrian language consists of a handful of Illyrian words cited in classical sources, and numerous examples of Illyrian anthroponyms, ethnonyms, toponyms and hydronyms. A grouping of Illyrian with the Messapian language has been proposed for about a century, ...

Illyria: Encyclopedia II - Spike Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Biography

Spike Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Character History. William Pratt was born in 1860 in London, England to Anne Pratt and an unknown father. William's surname was not revealed in the series and for years was widely accepted to be "Walthrop" in the fandom. However, creator Joss Whedon recently revealed it to be "Pratt". In 1880, at approximately 25 to 30 years of age, William was a brown-haired, ineffectual gentleman who lived with his mother and wrote poetry. He was called "William the Bloody" behind his bac ...

Illyria: Encyclopedia II - Mark Antony - Supporter of Caesar

In 54 BC, Antony became a member of the staff of Caesar's armies in Gaul. He again proved to be a competent military leader in the Gallic wars, but his personality caused instability wherever he went. Caesar himself was said to be frequently irritated by his behaviour. Nevertheless, raised by Caesar's influence to the offices of quaestor, augur, and tribune of the plebs (50 BC), he supported the cause of his patron with great energy. Caesar's two proconsular commands, during a period of ten years, were expiring, and the general wanted ...

Illyria: Encyclopedia II - Dalmatia - Definitions

The historical region of Dalmatia was much larger than the present-day Dalmatia. Dalmatia signified not only a geographical unit, but it was an entity based on common culture and settlement types, a common narrow eastern Adriatic coastal belt, Mediterranean climate, sclereophyllus vegetation of the Illyrian vegetation province, Adriatic carbonate platform, and karst morphology. Among other things, the ecclestiastical primatical territory today continues to be larger because of the history: it includes part of modern Montenegro (anothe ...

Flavius Belisarius (505-565) was one of the greatest generals of the Byzantine Empire and one of the greatest generals in history.
