Igor Stravinsky

A selection of articles related to Igor Stravinsky:

A Rake's Progress is a series of the paintings and engravings by William Hogarth made from 1733 to 1735. The eight pictures show the decline and fall of Tom Rakewell, the spendthrift son and heir of a rich merchant, who comes to London, wastes all his money on luxurious living, whoring and gambling, and as a consequence is imprisoned in the Fleet Prison and ultimately Bedlam. In the first two paintings in the series Hogarth paints pictures showing high fashionable society, with the tailors, musicians and riders

In music unified field is often used to refer to the "unity of musical space" created by the free use of melodic as harmonic and harmonic as melodic material. The technique is most associated with the twelve-tone technique, created by its "total thematicism" where a tone-row (melody) generates all (harmonic) material. It was also used by Alexander Scriabin, though from a diametrically opposed direction, created by his use of extremely slow harmonic rhythm which eventually led to his use of unordered pitch-class sets, usually hexachords (of six pitches) as harmony ..

* Encyclopedia II - Clarinet - Usage and repertoire of the clarinet

Clarinet - Classical music. In classical music, clarinets are part of standard orchestral instrumentation, which frequently includes two clarinetists playing individual parts — each player usually equipped with a pair of standard clarinets in B flat and A. Clarinet sections grew larger during the 19th century, employing a third clarinetist or a bass clarinet. In the 20th century, composers such as Igor Stravinsky, Richard Strauss and Olivier Messiaen enlarged the clarinet section on occasion to up to nine playe ...

* Encyclopedia II - Cymbalum - History

The small cymbalum developed from the Persian santur, which entered Europe during the Middle Ages. The instrument became popular with Romanian Roma musicians (lăutari) around the 19th century; by the end of the century was quite widespread, taking over from the cobza. [1] In Wallachia and Muntenia it is used almost as a percussion instrument. In Transylvania and Banat, the style of play is more tonal, heavy with arpeggios. The santur (also called santoor in India) spread throughout the world. It was not only modified by nomadic Roma ...

* Encyclopedia II - Censorship of music - Censorship in classical music

For many years Wagner and even Beethoven were never played in Israel, though they were not formally banned, because of their association with the Nazi era (even though both died long before the Nazis came to power), and Beethoven at least could not conceivably be considered to have held fascist or anti-semitic leanings. The conductor Sir Simon Rattle provoked controversy by performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in Israel. Jewish conductor Daniel Barenboim has also done a great deal to make German classical music acceptable in Israel, but cau ...

* Encyclopedia II - Bass trumpet - Wagner's bass trumpet

Richard Wagner's first intention for Der Ring des Nibelungen was a bass trumpet in 13' E♭, clearly based on the instruments he would have come across during his dealings with military bands. However, while the opening section of Das Rheingold might indicate the use of such an instrument, the part quickly rises to G♭5, which would have been a nineteenth partial on the long instrument originally envisaged and no composer who understood brass instr ...

Historical source for behaviour adaptation to modern 7-tone music

Why the 7-tone scale for modern music?If we go by early Greek, Chinese and Japanese civilisations, many early musical scales were pentatonic (5 "main notes;" still a feature of Gamelan music in Bali). In the 5-tonic, the octave was divided by the simple means of counting the figures on one hand. Russian composer Borodin noticed it in folk song and used it in "Prince Igor" (it was represented in the modern production `Kismet' by the song `Stranger in Paradise'.)
