Hypnotic drugs are a class of drugs that induce sleep, used in the treatment of severe insomnia. These drugs include barbiturates, benzodiazepines, zolpidem, zopiclone, eszopiclone, chloral hydrate, chlormethiazole or the antihistamines doxylamine, promethazine, and diphenhydramine. Alcohol is often tried as a hypnotic drug but it is not particularly effective. A state of mind in which one's focus of attention is narrow and a higher level of awareness of the focal point is attained than is normal when one is awake.

The power of conscious criticism is suppressed and suggestions move directly into the unconscious mind. Suggestions are acted upon more powerfully than is possible in the normal waking state.
