Humility: Yoga and humility

The essence of yoga is humility! Therefore, it is not surprising that the symbol of yoga or yogamudra is a posture that fosters an attitude of humility. Can one say more on the importance and vital significance of humility in the practice and philosophy of yoga? The phrase 'practice and philosophy' itself is redundant because, in Indian Ontological systems, philosophy translates as darsana , which suggests a first-hand personal experience of the seeker. So, philosophy in India was totally devoid of mere armchair ruminations or meanderings of white collared scientists in their ivory towers.

Humility: A Christian Theological Dictionary on Humility

A Christian theological definition of Humility according to CARM - The Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry:

"

Humility

The attitude of the Christian that teaches us not to "...think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment..." (Rom. 12:3). It teaches us to prefer others over ourselves (Rom. 12:10). It is knowing our true position before God. It is not self-abasement or demeaning one's self. "God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6). Humility is necessary to be a disciple of Jesus (Matt. 18:3-4). The humility of Jesus is described in Philippians 2:5-8, "Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death - even death on a cross!" (NIV).

Humility: Learning To Take A Back Seat

Some people are compulsive exhibitionists. You can find them almost anywhere; they would do anything to get noticed. At a wedding, they want to be the bride and at a funeral, the corpse.

Julius Caesar, who was an incorrigible egotist, was kidnapped when he was a child. He was held for a ransom of 11,000 gold pieces. Horrified, he exhorted his captors to raise the ransom amount to 2,50,000 gold pieces so as to preserve his prestige!

Humility: Encyclopedia II - Hovot ha-Levavot - Humility

The sixth gate, "Sha'ar ha-Keni'ah," deals with humility. Humility is said to be manifested in gentle conduct toward one's fellowman, whether he be of equal standing or superior, but especially in one's attitude toward God. Humility springs from a consideration of the low origin of man, the vicissitudes of life, and one's own failings and shortcomings compared with the duties of man and the greatness of God; so that all prid ...

Humility: The Serene Jewel Of the Deccan

TS Eliot wrote in Four Quartets : "The only wisdom one can hope to acquire is the wisdom of humility...humility is endless..." I mulled over these words as I strolled through the bazaars of Hyderabad; its unique multicultural and multilingual tehzeeb an eloquent testimony of the richness of life itself, a flavour one couldn't possibly acquire from books alone.

Spiritually, Hyderabad stands out as a wonderful link-bridge between the north and south, imbibing the best of both in its culture, cuisine and character. The Deccan festival, conducted every year in March, celebrates the city's composite and secular character.

Penance is that goodness which refrains from killing.

Humility: The Agnya Chakra

Sixth Chakra: The Agnya Chakra

The sixth chakra is the chakra of forgiveness and compassion. Forgiveness is the power to let go of anger, hatred and resentment and to discover, in humility, the nobility and generosity of the Spirit. It is the one that dissolves all our ego, conditionings, habits, false ideas of racialism, and all our misidentifications. It is the narrow gate which opens the way for our consciousness to ascend to its final destination, which is the seventh center.

Roving eyes, watching impure things, or self-centeredness damage this chakra. Watching the sky, earth or nature can help cleanse it.

Humility: Situation Vacant - Saviour Wanted

India needs rejuvenation. This rejuvenation will come only with the revival of our great Indian ideals. India needs shakti. For this, extensive re-building needs to be initiated for the country to acquire physical, mental and spiritual strength.

For creating this stupendous energy, India needs a new spiritual awakening. A new direction. The inspiration for such an awakening could come from a prophet of peace, for instance, someone like Guru Nanak, who proclaimed: "Love the saints of every faith, Put away the pride! The essence of religion is Humility, service, and sympathy.  Not fine clothes, Not the yogi'sgarb and ashes, Not the blowing of horn, Not the shaven head, Not long prayers...".

Humility: Faith is Devotion, Not Ostentation

Ostentation has today taken precedence over observance of faith in the true spirit. Picture any festival or place of worship, and the extent of this malady at once strikes us: Blinding illumination, blaring loudspeakers and colourful pageants, all horrifyingly self-indulgent and, of course, indifferent to the essence of faith.

Ignoring the fact that it is from the seed of austerity and humility that most faiths have germinated, this idiom of ostentation still appeals to a section of our populace, who, starved of sensible pursuits, yearn to give an outlet to their energies.

Humility: From Self-reliance To Self-surrender

Weak people say: "I resign myself to God because I am helpless to proceed further". But such words are not convincing for they reveal that there is, still, a trace of the crude ego left.

The exhibition of humility is only a pretence, a cover. And this is misinterpreted by others as piety. Hanuman says in the Ramayana: "I have surrendered everything to Rama and I have installed Him firmly in my heart. I am His faithful servant". Such a statement is convincing because it comes from a strong, fearless and intelligent person.

Humility: Rise Above Dogma, Realise The Truth

Oneness: Rise Above Dogma, Realise The Truth

When I pass by the neighbourhood mosque, I bow my head in respect just as I do when I pass by the temple. The mullah's call to the faithful turns me towards prayer and God. I go through the same upsurge of emotions when I visit a church or gurdwara. When I bow my head in humility to Christ and the Guru Granth Sahib, I see in them my beloved Lord Krishna. Similarly, when I hear the Buddhist chant: ''Buddham Sharanam Gachchhami'', it continues to reverberate within me for long after, giving me the same sense of peace I experience when I say my usual prayers.

Humility: Encyclopedia - Obedience

Obedience is the willingness to follow the will of others. Obedience is often associated with social dominance and submission. Some animals can easily be trained to be obedient by employing operant conditioning that places the human being in the role of a dominant animal. Other animals do not respond well to such training. Obedience schools exist to condition dogs into obeying the orders of human owners. Humans have been shown to be surprisingly obedient in the presence of perceived legitimate authority figures, a ...

Humility: Encyclopedia - Circumcellions

The Circumcellions, also known as the "agonistici", were a donatist sect in North Africa that overvalued martyrdom and had a special devotion for the martyrs, rendering honors to their graves. The Circumcellions had come to regard martyrdom as the true Christian virtue (as Church Father Tertullian said, a martyr's death day was actually his birthday), and thus came to disregard chastity, sobriety, humility, charity, and other virtues. Instead, they focused on br ...
