Hugo Borchardt: Encyclopedia II - Recoil operation - How they work

When a projectile is accelerated down the barrel of a firearm, all or a portion of the firearm will begin to move in the opposite direction, as required for conservation of momentum, according to the formula: :Bullet mass * bullet velocity = recoiling mass * recoil velocity In non-recoil-operated firearms, it is generally the entire firearm that recoils. In recoil-operated firearms, however, only a portion of the firearm is allowed to recoil, while inertia holds another portion motionless relative to the recoiling mass. T ...

Hugo Borchardt: Encyclopedia II - Georg Luger - Early life and military service

Georg Luger was born to Bartholomaeus Luger, a surgeon. He went to school in Padua, Italy, and later to the Vienna Commercial High School. Luger volunteered for military service with the 78th Line Regiment on December 19, 1867. He was promoted to Corporal on June 1, 1868. Luger's good marksmanship enabled him to attend the Military Firearms School; his interest in automatic loading systems was gained here. In 1871 Luge ...

Hugo Borchardt: Encyclopedia II - Luger pistol - Service

The Swiss Army evaluated the Parabellum pistol and after a change to the more potent Parabellum or 7.65×23 mm cartridge (.30 Luger in USA), it was adapted in 1900 as its military sidearm, and designated as the Ordonnanzpistole 00 or OP00. In 1900 the US purchased 1000 Lugers (in 7.65) for field trials, on the heels of a Late 1890s/1900 competition that included the Colt M1900, Steyr Mannlicher M1894, and an entry from Mauser. Later, a small number were sampled in the then brand new, more powerfull 9 mm round. Field expe ...

Hugo Borchardt: Encyclopedia II - Recoil operation - Short recoil operation

The short recoil action dominates the world of centerfire automatic pistols, being found on nearly all of 9 x 19mm or greater caliber. Short recoil operation differs from long recoil operation in that the barrel and bolt recoil only a short distance before they unlock and separate. The barrel stops quickly, and the bolt continues rearwards, compressing the recoil spring and performing the other actions of cycling. During the last portion of its forward travel, the bolt loc ...

Hugo Borchardt: Encyclopedia II - Luger pistol - Operation

The Parabellum uses a jointed arm mechanism (the joint is called a knee, or in German "Kniegelenk" (knee joint)); it is also called a toggle action, as opposed to the slide actions of almost every other semiautomatic pistol. Upon recoiling with the barrel, the toggle strikes a cam built into the frame, causing the knee joint to hinge and the toggle and breach assembly to unlock. At this point the barrel stops moving rearward, but the toggle and breach assembly continue moving rearward due to momentum- extracting the spent casing from the cha ...

Hugo Borchardt: Encyclopedia II - Georg Luger - Family

Luger married Elisabeth Josefa Dufek in 1873. He moved to Vienna with her and they had three children (in order): Georg Franz Luger Julius Wilhelm Bartholomaeus Luger (born March 16, 1880) Friedrich Alexander Georg Luger (born April 26, 1884) Luger's first son, Georg Franz, became an engineer and joined his father in military weapons development. His second son died during Worl ...

Hugo Borchardt: Encyclopedia II - Recoil operation - Long recoil operation

Long recoil operations are found primariy in shotguns, particularly ones based on John M. Browning's Auto-5 action. In a long recoil action, the barrel and bolt recoil all the way back as a unit. Once its rearward movement is absorbed by its recoil spring, the barrel is forced forward by the spring, where it unlocks from the bolt and returns to battery. The bolt, after compressing its own recoil spring, is held in the rearmost position until the barrel returns to battery. At this point, the fired shell has been extracted and ejected, and a n ...
