Wizarding world - Fundamentals.
The society of the wizarding world is centred around two facts. The first and most obvious one is that its members can use magic. Presented as an inborn capability to do otherwise impossible things, magic is honed through study and training into a skill. It permeates every facet of the wizarding world, both as a near-universal tool and imbued in objects, such as wands, vital amplifying/focusing devices for spells, and creatures, including dragons and phoenixes. Spells can have almos ...

A letter is sent to the magical children in Britain during the summer of their eleventh year. If, for any reason, this letter does not reach its intended recipient, owls will continue to deliver letters until one reaches its intended recipient.
The letter also contains a list of supplies, including spell books and cauldrons. The prospective student is expected to buy all the necessary materials, normally from shops in Diagon Alley, a street in a wizarding neighborhood near Charing Cross in London. Letters to Muggle-born wizard ...

Parts of the School's buildings date back to the eleventh century, and it is quite likely that the first schoolb ...

Hogwarts - Early History.
Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago by two wizards and two witches: Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Helga Hufflepuff. Shortly after founding Hogwarts, Salazar Slytherin fell out with the other founders. Slytherin wanted to admit only pure-blood students, but the other three founders disagreed. Slytherin left the school, but not before secretly building the Chamber of Secrets. When an eventual successor, the Heir of Slytherin, returned to the school, he or she would be able to open the Chamber, unleash a horrible Basilisk, and purge the s ...

| | | | Houses: Encyclopedia II - House - Inside the houseHouses consist of many specific designated rooms. Basic design consists of a living/eating area, a sleeping area, and (if indoor facilities are available) a washing/lavatory area. Often, in traditional agrarian societies, domestic animals such as chickens or larger livestock share part of the house with human beings. In the West, where plumbing is common and the standard of living fairly high, each house will at least contain a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen or kitchen area, and a living room. These rooms should be designed to meet the needs of ...

There is a magic quill at Hogwarts that detects the birth of a magical person and records his or her name. | | | | Houses: Encyclopedia II - Westminster School - Notable buildingsThe 14th century Abbot's state dining hall, now named 'College Hall', may be one of the oldest and finest examples of medieval refectory in existence. The School uses it for its original purpose every day in term-time, whilst during the holidays it reverts to the Dean, as the Abbot's successor. Elizabeth Woodville took sanctuary here in 1483 with 5 daughters and her son Richard, but failed to save him from his fate as one of the Princes in the Tower. In the 1560s Queen Elizabeth I several times came to see her scholars act their Latin Plays on a stage in front of the attractive Elizabethan gallery, which ...
