They were originally named 'The Hot Chocolate Band' by Mavis Smith, who worked for the Apple Corps press office. This was quickly shortened to just Hot Chocolate. Errol started their recording career making a reggae version of John Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance", but he was told he needed permission. Much to Errol's surprise, he was contacted by Apple Records, and discovered that John Le ...

Apple Records is a British record label which was founded in 1968 (as a division of Apple Corps Ltd.) by The Beatles. Earlier Beatles albums had been released on Parlophone in England, and Capitol Records (or United Artists Records) in the US. In a new recording deal, EMI and Capitol agreed to distribute Apple Records until 1975; Apple owned the rights to records by artists they signed, while EMI retained ownership of the Beatles' records, though issuing them under the Apple label. The label became successful, surviving the breakup of the Be ...

The name was influenced by Robert Altman's film McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), which featured the Leonard Cohen song of the same name ("because The Captains of Industry weren't as funny"), and was supposed to reflect the ambiguity of a rock'n ...

Hot Chocolate: Encyclopedia II - Hot chocolate - History

The first users of cacao were most likely the Olmecs, a Native American people of Mesoamerica and the oldest civilization of The Americas (1500-400 BC). Later, the Maya civilization consumed cacao-based drinks made with beans from their plantations in the Chontalpa region of present-day Tabasco, Mexico. They created a drink which in Nahuatl was called "xocolatl" (xococ, bitter + atl, water), the "x" being an archaic Spanish phoneme with a similar pronunciation as the modern English "sh". This drink was made from roasted cocoa beans, water, and a little spice. ...
