Holistic Healing

A view of health care focusing on the “whole self” (body, mind and spirit) and natural or spiritual cures. The system embraces both traditional and New Age therapy.

Holistic dentistry treats the teeth, jaw, and related structures with special focus on how treatment will affect the entire body. It stresses the use of nontoxic restoration materials for dental work, and focuses on the impact that hidden dental infections and other dental problems can have on overall health.

HEALING TOUCH

is practiced by registered nurses and others to accelerate wound healing, relieve pain, promote relaxation, prevent illness and ease the dying process. The practitioner uses light touch or works with his or her hands near the client’s body in an effort to restore balance to the client’s energy system

Reiki

Practitioners of this ancient Tibetan healing system use light hand placements to channel healing energies to the recipient. While practitioners may vary widely in technique and philosophy, Reiki is commonly used to treat emotional and mental distress as well as chronic and acute physical problems, and to assist the recipient in achieving spiritual focus and clarity.

HERBALISM

uses natural plants or plant-based substances to treat a range of illnesses and to enhance the functioning of the body’s systems. Though herbalism is not a licensed professional modality in the U.S., herbs are prescribed by a range of practitioners, from holistic M.D.s to acupuncturists to naturopaths.

HOLISTIC/WHOLISTIC

an adjective meaning targeted to the whole person - mind, body, and spirit. Wholistic medicine considers not only physical health but also the emotional, spiritual, social, and mental well-being of the person.

Healing: As opposed to “curing” of a disease, healing is seen as a return to wholeness of body, mind and spirit. Healing may or may not include a cure; its focus is restoring balance. Healing can be physical (disease), emotional (relationships), and spiritual (a realignment with one’s true nature).

SPIRITUAL HEALING, SHAMANIC HEALING

practitioners who regard themselves as conductors of healing energy or sources from the spiritual realm. Both may call upon spiritual helpers such as power animals, angels, inner teachers, the client’s Higher Self, or other spiritual forces. Both forms of healing can be used for a range of emotional and physical illnesses.

MANIPULATION

application of manual force for healing. Term describes the techniques used in osteopathy, chiropractic, massage, and other bodywork therapies. Manipulation may involve various forms of massage, muscle pressure, and joint realignment or adjustment.

in sound healing, projection of a nonverbal sound to balance the body’s energy fields.

Ajna chakra

Spiritual center located between the eyebrows, the sixth spinal centre, see also kutastha chakra. The master or the guru who carries out orders from the Soul to the physical level. This is the centre for Satguru and also for chidakasha.

CAM: An acronym that stands for Complementary/Alternative Medicine, used by researchers, academics and health professionals to refer to complementary medicine.

Infant Massage

Specific massage techniques for infants, these methods can be easily learned by massage therapists, nurses, parents, and others. Premature babies are especially responsive, and recent studies have proven that the benefits of this technique include weight gain, improvement in Central Nervous System functioning, and enhanced emotional well-being.
