Holiness: Encyclopedia II - Holy Land - Its meaning in Islam

The term "Holy Land" is used in the Qur'an: And (remember) when Moses said unto his people: "O my people! Remember Allah's favour unto you, how He placed among you prophets, and He made you kings, and gave you that (which) He gave not to any (other) of (His) creatures. O my people! Go into the holy land which Allah hath ordained for you. Turn not in flight, for surely ye turn back as losers ...

Holiness: Encyclopedia II - Holy Spirit - Non-Trinitarian Christian views

In the belief of many nontrinitarian religions — Unitarians and Jehovah's Witnesses, for instance — the Holy Spirit is God's spirit or God's active force, and not an actual person. In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints the Holy Spirit is considered a third and individual member of the Godhead, a different being from the Father and the Son, having a body of spirit (whereas the Father and the Son are believed to be resurre ...

Holiness: Encyclopedia II - Holy Week - Eastern Orthodox Christianity

In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, during Holy Week, Orthros (Matins) services for each day are held the preceding evening. Thus, the Matins service of Monday is sung Palm Sunday evening, and so on. (The services of Sunday through Tuesday evenings are often called Bridegroom Matins, because of their theme of Christ-as-Bridegroom.) Divine Liturgy of the Last Supper is held on the morning of Holy Thursday. Matins of Holy Friday, with its Twelve Gospel Readings, is held on the evening of Holy Thursday; Matins of Holy Saturday is held on t ...

Holiness: Encyclopedia II - Holy Grail - The beginnings of the Grail in literature

Holy Grail - Chrétien de Troyes. The Grail is first featured in Perceval, le Conte du Graal (The Story of the Grail) by Chrétien de Troyes, who claims he was working from a source book given to him by his patron, Count Philip of Flanders. In this incomplete poem, dated sometime between 1180 and 1191, the object has not yet acquired the implications of holiness it would have in later works. While dining in the magical abode of the Fisher King, Perceval witnesses a wondrous procession in which youths carry ...

Holiness: Encyclopedia II - Holy Grail - The later legend

Belief in the Grail, and interest in its potential whereabouts, has never ceased. Ownership has been attributed to various groups (including the Knights Templar). There are cups claimed to be the Grail in several churches like the Valencia cathedral. The emerald chalice at Genoa, which was obtained during the crusades at Aleppo at great cost, has been less championed as the Holy Grail since an accident on the road while it was being returned from Paris after the fall of Napoleon revealed that the emerald was green glass. In Wolfram von Esche ...

Holiness: Encyclopedia II - Holy Grail - Ideas of the Grail

As stated above, the Grail was considered a bowl or dish when first described by Chrétien de Troyes. Other authors had their own ideas; Robert de Boron portrayed it as the vessel of the Last Supper, and Peredur had no Grail per se, presenting the hero instead with a platter containing his kinsman's bloody, severed head. In Parzival, Wolfram von Eschenbach, citing the authority of a certain (probably fictional) Kyot the Provençal, claimed the Grail was a stone that fell from Heaven, and had been the sanctuary of the Neutral An ...

Holiness: Encyclopedia II - O Holy Night - Lyrics

Version 1 Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Savior's birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! Oh night divine, Oh night when Christ was born; Oh night divi ...

Holiness: Encyclopedia II - Holiness code - Embedding in the Priestly source

In the documentary hypothesis, the Holiness Code is considered part of the Priestly source. However, it is believed, under the hypothesis, to have been an originally separate legal code (referred to as "H") which the Priestly source chose to embed into their writing. The hypothesis further asserts that the Holiness code was subjected to editing by the Priestly source. Some such editing is simply the addition of phrases such as And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them,, designed to put the code into the context of the remainder of a code ...

Holy Spirit - Judaism. Judaism as a whole does not have a developed pneumatology. Most Jews consider the Holy Spirit to be a thoroughly Christian concept. "The designation of the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Ghost, stems from a Hebrew figure of speech, the ruah hakodesh ("holy spirit"). In Jewish usage, however, this concept was never identified with a seperate person, but with a Divine power which could fill men, as, for instance, the prophets." - The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, 1943, 1969, see: "Trinity", pp. 308.

Holiness: Encyclopedia II - Holy Prepuce - Modern practices

Calcata is worthy of special mention, as the reliquary containing the Holy Foreskin was paraded through the streets of this Italian village as recently as 1983 on the Feast of the Circumcision (marked by the Catholic church around the world on January 1 each year). The practice ended, however, when thieves stole the jewel-encrusted case, contents and all. Following this theft, it is unclear whether any of the purported Holy Prepuces still exist. In a 1997 television documentary for Channel 4, British journalist Miles Kington travelled to Italy in search of the Holy Foresk ...

Holiness: Encyclopedia II - Holy Cross Iowa - History

Originally the community was settled by Irish and German immigrants in the early 1800s. The settlement became known as Pin Oak in 1844, the name originating from the many pin oak trees native to the area and after the rural post office located near there. In 1855 the settlement's name changed again, to Georgetown. This name honored George Gallon, who offered to donate part of his land to build a town. In 1898 the ...

Holiness: Encyclopedia II - Holy Ghost Fathers - History

The Spiritans were founded in Paris in 1703 by a wealthy young Breton lawyer, Claude Poullart des Places, from Brittany. Having opted for the priesthood himself, he wanted to form a religious order for young men who had a vocation to become priests but were too poor to do so. The community was formed in dedication to the Holy Spirit to minister to the poor and to provide chaplains in hospitals, prisons, and schools. The congregation soon developed a missionary side - some volunteered for service in the Far East and North America - and by 176 ...

Holiness: Encyclopedia II - Holy Prepuce - Allegorical importance

Apart from its physical importance as a relic, the Holy Foreskin is sometimes claimed to have appeared in a famous vision of Saint Catherine of Siena. In the vision, Jesus mystically marries her, and his amputated foreskin is given to her as a wedding ring. However, this has not been traced any earlier than a seventeenth-century anti-Catholic parody, and as such is of dubious credibility. During the late 17th century, Catholic scholar and theologian Leo Allatius in De Praeputio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Diatriba ("Discussio ...

Holiness: A Christian Theological Dictionary on Holy Holiness

A Christian theological definition of Holy Holiness according to CARM - The Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry:

"

Holy, Holiness

A quality of perfection, sinlessness, and inability to sin that is possessed by God alone. As Christians we are called to be holy (1 Pet. 1:16). But this does not refer to our nature. Instead, it is a command of our practice and thought. We are to be holy in obedience (1 Pet. 1:14). God has made us holy through His Son Jesus (Eph. 1:4; 1 Pet. 2:9).
