Casualty is a long-running BBC television drama serial, first broadcast in 1986 and transmitted on BBC One. It was devised by Jeremy Brock and Paul Unwin. It is based in and around the fictional Holby City Hospital, situated in Holby, a fictional city bearing a close resemblance to Bristol, where the show is filmed. Bristol landmarks, including the docks and the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge, are regularly glimpsed in the outdoor scenes. The exterior shots of the hospital itself were formerly filmed at the city's technical college, but are now shot on a small industrial e ...

Holby City: Encyclopedia II - Elstree Studios - History

The first studio was set up in Borehamwood just before the First World War. Film making took off in the inter-war period and there were several different studios in operation. The largest facilities were the MGM-British Studios and the Associated British Pictures Corporation studio - later known as Elstree Studios. While MGM made many glamourous films with stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Ingrid Bergmann its most exciting time was in the 70s to the late 80s when films like the first three Star Wars films, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and I ...

Holby City: Encyclopedia II - EastEnders - History and popularity

EastEnders - Background. EastEnders was launched at a critical moment in the BBC’s history and was intended to demonstrate the BBC’s ability to produce popular programming. It started airing on the night after a major ident change for the channel, with the show representing the "new face" of the BBC. Critics first derided the new offering, as it was clear that BBC wished to bridge the gap between the network and its competitor, ITV. One news source went as far as to accuse the channel of only having the guts to air the soap after Patricia Phoenix, arguably Britai ...

Holby City: Encyclopedia II - Ross Kemp - Acting Career

Ross Kemp - EastEnders. His first credited television appearance was in 1986, playing Graham Lodsworth in Emmerdale Farm (now Emmerdale). But by far his most famous role to date was his award-winning portrayal of hardman 'Grant Mitchell' in the popular BBC series EastEnders. Kemp debuted as hard-man Grant along with Steve McFadden, who played Grant's brother Phil Mitchell, in February 1990. On-screen, Kemp, as Grant, was often at the centre of EastEnders' plots, amongst t ...

Holby City: Encyclopedia II - BBC television drama - Changing attitudes in the 1980s and beyond

Following Sutton's departure from the Head of Drama role in 1981 and his return to front-line producing duties in Shakespeare plays, his place as Head of Drama was taken by Graeme MacDonald. MacDonald had been Head of Serials and later Head of Series & Serials under Sutton, with the two departments having been merged in 1980, remaining so for most of the decade before separating again at the end of it. MacDonald maintained the status quo, and was only Head of Drama for a short time before he was promoted again to run a channel as Controller of BBC Two. ...

Holby City: Encyclopedia II - Hallelujah song - Lyrics

With each different musical interpretation of Cohen's song, it is interesting to note how the lyrics have changed and evolved. However, it seems that these variations may be more due to selection than actual change. In a 2001 interview with The Observer, John Cale said: After I saw [Cohen] perform at the Beacon I asked if I could have the lyrics to "Hallelujah". When I got home one night there were fax paper rolls everywhere because Leonard had insis ...

Holby City: Encyclopedia II - Elstree Studios - The name

Many newcomers to the town are surprised to discover that, in spite of the word "Elstree" in their names, both of the operational studios are in the Borehamwood part of the town. Indeed, this was true of nearly all of the former studios too. There are a number of reasons for this. When the studios were being established, Elstree was significantly larger than Borehamwood. It must therefore have seemed sensible for anything that needed the name of the town in its name to be called after Elstree rather than Borehamwood. Nowadays, Boreham ...

Holby City: Encyclopedia II - Hallelujah song - Cover artists

A well known cover of the song is by American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, whose copy has eclipsed Cohen's original in popularity. Most subsequent covers have copied Buckley's version, which in turn follows former Velvet Underground member John Cale's 1991 recording. Rufus Wainwright also covered the track, emphasizing the piano – and his version was included on the Shrek soundtrack in 2001, although it was John Cale's recording from the tribute album I'm Your Fan that inspired Wainwright's and was used in the film ...

Holby City: Encyclopedia II - BBC television drama - Children's drama

The BBC has established a strong reputation in the field of children's drama, although children's dramas are almost universally commissioned and / or produced by the BBC's Children's Department rather than the Drama Department itself. There are however occasional crossovers - Doctor Who, for example, would commonly be regarded as a children's or family programme, but has always been produced by the main Drama Department. Throughout much of the department's history, the epmhasis has been on continuing productions of short-run dr ...

Already an established national radio broadcaster, the BBC began test transmissions with the new technology of television as early as 1929, working with John Logie Baird and using his primitive early apparatus. The following year, as part of one of these test transmissions, the BBC produced what is believed to be the first piece of television drama ever to have been screened, an adaptation of the Italian playw ...

Holby City: Encyclopedia II - EastEnders - Social realism

Created in Thatcherite Britain during the worst economic recession in Britain since the 1930s combined with high unemployment and rocketing crime rates, EastEnders tried to represent this in the social realist tradition.
