History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - History of rugby league - From 1910 to 1995

History of rugby league - Rugby league before and during the First World War. The early years of the 20th century also saw attempts to establish the game in Wales, with several teams being formed in the principality. None of these ventures lasted long, however Wales remained a source of playing talent for rugby league. Over the years many hundreds of Welsh rugby union players "moved north" to the major English clubs, attracted by the opportunity to earn money playing rugby. (It was not until rugby union officially allowed professionalism, ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia - Amateurism

Amateurism is the philosophy that elevates things done without self-interest above things done for pay, especially with regard to sports which require participants to be amateurs. A zealously guarded ideal in the 19th century, it faced steady decline throughout the 20th century and is now held to by few organisations, even if they maintain the word "Amateur" in their titles. The term shamateurism refers to the issues which sometimes arose at the elite level of such sports. In some cases it became possible for successful ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Terry Lamb - Western Suburbs Magpies Career

Lamb was a non-playing reserve for the Canterbury Third Grade side in 1979 and was hopeful of a contract with his junior side in 1980. Lamb was told the best he could hope for was a position in the Presidents Cup (Under 21's) side. Lamb believed he could make grade and backed himself when Wests gave him the opportunity. Lamb impressed in the trials to win himself a contract, however he started off in Third Grade where he played six matches. Lamb only played one Reserve Grade match where he was called up to play halfback in the Amco Cup. Lam ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Rugby league - Glossary

‘ball-runner’ vs ‘ball-player’ (also ‘ball-running’ vs ‘ball-playing’) A descriptive categorization of a players technique based upon their favoured ‘action’ (play) when receiving the ball. A ‘ball-runner’ prefers to run at the defensive line and will look to pass/offload to his supporting teammates upon reaching, breaking or busting through the defensive line but not before. Alternatively a ‘ball-player’ prefers to pass before the defensive line rather than at or after meeting it ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Amateurism - Rugby

The team sport which has had the greatest problems with shamateurism is probably rugby union. At one time rugby had been popular with both the middle and working classes in England yet working class players found it hard to play away games or to cope with injuries. 'Boot money' had long been paid to certain players to help them cope with expenses. The struggle between clubs that supported 'broken time payments' and those that supported a stricter interpretation of amateurism came to a head in 1895 when clubs from the North of England broke a ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Terry Lamb - 1995 Grand Final

The 1995 season was to be Lamb's last season and the Bulldogs were keen to send him out a winner but it all went wrong early when the Bulldogs were caught up in the firing line of the Super League War. Lamb's strength and character as a captain shone through when he held the club together and rallied everyone (bar one) in the latter half of the season. Canterbury qualified in 6th position for the ARL Finals Series. The Bulldogs defeated St George, Brisbane and defending premiers ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Terry Lamb - Captain of the Bulldogs

One of the first jobs that new coach Chris Anderson did was appoint Lamb as captain ahead of Paul Langmack and Andrew Farrar, who were commonly the deputies when Peter Tunks (who joined Penrith Panthers in 1990) was unavailable. The decision by Anderson caused plenty of controversy with Langmack who all but made his mind up that his future wasn't at Canterbury. Farrar would also leave the club as well. Anderson's decision proved to be the correct one as Lamb was the only senior player at the club who was on top of his game and was the ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Terry Lamb - Coaching Career

Lamb went straight from playing to coaching immediately after his retirement. Lamb was trainer in Chris Anderson's last year at Canterbury and took on the reserve grade position in 1998 with Steve Folkes promoted to the top grade side. Lamb immediately tasted success steering the 1998 reserve grade side to a premiership and backed that up with a premiership in 2000. Lamb was also trainer for the first grade side and earned the ire for being like ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Terry Lamb - Hanley Incident and the World Cup

Warren Ryan departed Canterbury at the end of 1987 with reserve grade coach Phil Gould taking over the reigns in a caretaker role with Chris Anderson being groomed for the top position. Canterbury was hungry for success in 1988 and the arrival of Gould added renewed enthusiasm. The 1988 season was Lamb's 5th at Canterbury and the first he wouldn't cross the line at least 10 times, but Lamb was to enjoy another fantastic and consistent season. Lamb played a very important role in Canterbury's season as former captain St ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Amateurism - The present day

By the early 21st Century the Olympics and all the major team sports accepted professional competitors. However there are still some sports which maintain a distinction between amateur and professional status, with separate competitions for the latter, most prominently golf. Problems can arise in this situation, for example when sponsors offer to help with an amateur's playing expenses in the hope of striking lucrative endorsement deals with them if they turn professional at a later date, but this is perhaps better seen as corruption o ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Amateurism - Background

In the United Kingdom sport had always been the preserve of the rich who were the only people who had free time in which to pursue sport, the working classes worked six days a week and sport was forbidden on the sabbath. The traditional mass sports that did exist were mostly played on public holidays e.g. Shrove Tuesday when traditional 'mob football' was popular. When the 'Factories Act' gave working men half a day off the opportunity to take part in sport was suddenly available. Unlike the rich where payment had never been an issue working ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Terry Lamb - 1986 Kangaroo Tour

Lamb won selection on the 1986 Kangaroo Tour as backup five-eighth to captain Wally Lewis. Lamb's form in 1986 and his versatility to cover five-eighth, halfback and lock was always going to make him a key player on tour but little did anyone know that Lamb was about to set a landmark that has never been achieved and with full scale tours now a thing of the past never will be achieved. The first match against Wigan saw Lamb come on as a late replacement but he got his chance in the mid-week match against Hull Kingston Rovers where Lam ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Terry Lamb - Joining the Bulldogs and early success

The news that Lamb's Dally M winnings was more than his contract ensured that he would be in hot demand from the richer Sydney clubs now that he was off contract. Easts and Balmain both showed interest but it was always between Manly (the Sydney Silvertails at the time) and his junior club Canterbury for his services. Eventually Lamb chose the Bulldogs for less money than what Manly were prepared to offer. Lamb settled nicely into Canterbury under the coaching of Warren Ryan and playing outside Steve Mortimer. Lamb's arrival did cause ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Rugby league - Playing rugby league

Rugby league is played by two teams on a rectangular field with a length generally double the width. The in-goal areas, located at each end of the field, are used to score a try. At the intersection between the field of play and each in-goal area are also a set of goal posts in the shape of the capital letter H, used for point scoring via a field goal, penalty goal or conversion. History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Rugby league - History

Like most forms of football, rugby league's roots can be traced to early football history, through the playing of ball games which bear little resemblance to modern sports. It is then important to acknowledge the development of the modern codes and two separate schisms in football history. In the nineteenth century football was most prominently played in private schools. Each school had its own rules based on whatever playing field that was available to them. The rules could be categorised as either handling or kicking f ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Amateurism - Figure Skating

Like other Olympic sports, figure skating used to have very strict amateur status rules. Over the years, these rules were relaxed to allow competitive skaters to receive token payments for performances in exhibitions (amid persistent rumors that they were receiving more money "under the table"), then to accept money for professional activities such as endorsements provided that the payments were made to trust ...

History of rugby league: Encyclopedia II - Amateurism - Football soccer

Boot money has been a phenomenon in amateur sport for centuries. The term "boot money" became popularized in the 1880s when it was not unusual for players to find half a crown (corresponding to 12½ pence after decimalisation) in their boots after a game. The Football Association prohibited paying players until 1885, and this is referred to as the "legalization" of professionalism because it was an amendment of the "Laws of the Game". However, a maximum salary cap of twelve pounds a week for a player with outside employment and ...
