Standard Urdu and Standard Hindi are distinct languages. There are two fundamental distinctions between them: the source of learned vocabulary (Persian or Sanskrit), and the script used to write them (an adaptation of the Persian script written in Nasta'liq style, or the devanagari alphabet).
