High-heeled shoe: Encyclopedia II - High-heeled shoe - History of the High-heeled Shoe

Men invented heels circa 1500 to keep their feet from slipping out of their stirrups while riding. By 1533, both men and women throughout the French courts were wearing heels of varying styles and heights, some as high as 5", even for men. This continued for approximately 250 years, migrating to a lesser extent as a style for both sexes to other countries, before the style was relegated primarily to women's wear in the late 1800s. As early as the the late fifteenth century, horsemen grew tired of their feet slipping out of their stirr ...

High-heeled shoe: Encyclopedia II - High-heeled shoe - High Heels Today
Today, high heels are typically worn in public only by women, who are often expected to wear high heels at work and on formal occasions. High heels have seen significant controversy in the medical field lately, with many podiatrists fed up with seeing patients whose severe foot problems were caused almost exclusively by high heel wear. Today's high heels, regardless of heel's shape, are generally limited to women's footwear. Some men's footwear, such as cowboy boots and shoes with a cuban heel are considered by some to be a high heel, ...

High-heeled shoe: Encyclopedia II - High-heeled shoe - The Future of Heels

While it's impossible to predict the future of fashion, there are several interesting trends. First is a return to leather, which for heels makes a lot of sense, since leather excels at providing support while gently remolding and conforming itself to the wearer's foot to provide better distributed support, thereby eliminating hot spots. Furthermore, in addition to providing comfortable, but not excessive levels of warmth, ...

High-heeled shoe: Encyclopedia II - Heel shoe - High-heels: not just for women

Mongolian horsemen were among the first to use heels as means to keep their feet from sliding out of their stirrups. It is also well known that Egyptian butchers wore high heels so they would not step directly in offal. Although most people equate high-heeled shoes with women, this is not only not the case throughout history, it's still not the case today. Many men throughout the Western world, including Europe, the U.S., Canada, and other countries, wear high-heeled shoes on a regular basis, and for a variety of reasons. High-heeled ...

High-heeled shoe: Encyclopedia II - Heel shoe - History

High heels are not a modern invention. Rather, they enjoy a rich and varied history, for both men as well as women. Controversy exists over when high heels were first invented, but the consensus is that heels were worn by both men and women throughout the world for many centuries and for a variety of reasons. Although high heeled shoes are depicted in ancient Egyptian murals on tombs and temples, the earliest recorded instance of men or women wearing an elevated shoe comes from Hellenic times. It's suspected that the wear of an elevat ...

High-heeled shoe: Encyclopedia - Climbing shoe

A climbing shoe is a piece of foot wear that is specifically designed and worn for climbing. To increase the grip of the foot on a climbing wall or rock face due to friction, the shoe is covered with a rubber layer. Usually, the shoes are only a few millimeters thick and will have a very tight fit around the feet. High performance shoes are made of a special vulcanized rubber that becomes flexible as it gets warm due to friction. This vastly increases the surface area between the shoe and the rock thus providing a better grip for the climber. Some of these shoes are asymmetrically shaped so climbers can ...

High-heeled shoe: Encyclopedia II - Beauty contest - Beauty contests and politics

Many feminists regard beauty contests for women as degrading to females in general, as well as to the women who compete in them. A common comparison made by feminists is that beauty contests are like a cattle market for women. They have particularly objected to swimsuit rounds in competitions, where the contestants parade dressed only in swimsuits and high heeled shoes. Partly because of this, beauty contests have declined ...

High-heeled shoe: Encyclopedia II - Shoe polish - History

Shoe polish - Before the 20th century. Since medieval times, dubbin, a waxy product, was used to soften and waterproof leather; however, it did not impart shine. [3] It was made from natural wax, oil and tallow. As leather with a high natural veneer became popular in the 18th century, a high glossy finish became important, particularly on shoes and boots. In most cases, a variety of homemade polishes were used to provide this finish, o ...

High-heeled shoe: Encyclopedia II - The Red Shoes film - Production

To create such a realistic idea of a ballet company at work and to be able to include a 15 minute ballet as the high point of the film, Powell & Pressburger decided to create a ballet company of over 50 dancers. The principal dancers were Robert Helpmann (who also choreographed the main ballet), Léoni ...

The traditonal boundaries of the Christopher Newport University campus have been Warwick Boulevard, Shoe Lane, and Prince Drew Road in Newport News. In recent years, however, the University has "jumped" Warwick Boulevard, buying and demolishing properties in the immediate area to expand. The University also purchased the former Ferguson High School, located across Shoe Lane from the main campus, and demolished most of it to build the Ferguson Center for the Performing Arts. This has involved rerouting Shoe Lane, and has been met with some re ...

High-heeled shoe: Encyclopedia II - Shoe polish - Composition toxicology and disposal

Shoe polish consists of a waxy colloidal emulsion, a substance composed of a number of partially immiscible liquids and solids mixed together. It is usually made from ingredients including some or all of naphtha, lanolin, turpentine, wax (often Carnauba wax), gum arabic and if required a colourant or dye. It typically has a specific gravity of 0.8, is negligibly soluble in water, and is made of between 65 and 77 percent volatiles—usually naphtha. The high amount of volatile substances means that the shoe polish will dry out and harden after application, while retaining its shine.See also:

High-heeled shoe: Encyclopedia II - Brake lining - Structure and function

Brake linings are composed of a relatively soft but tough and heat-resistant material with a high coefficient of dynamic friction (and ideally an identical coefficient of static friction) typically mounted to a solid metal backing using high-temperature adhesives or rivets. The complete assembly (including lining and backing) is then often called a brake pad or brake shoe. Using a typical bicycle brake as an example, the backing would be the metal shell which provides mechanical support, and the lining would be the rubbe ...
