Hesperides: Encyclopedia II - Libra - Mythology

The constellation, which had originally formed part of the claws of the scorpion (Scorpio), is the youngest of the Zodiac and the only one not to represent a living creature. In later Greek mythology, the constellation, which when considered on its own looks vaguely like a set of scales, was considered to depict the scales held by Astraea (identified as Virgo), the goddess of justice. Since Libra was originally part of Virgo (as scales), and before that part of Scorpio, it was not a distinct entity for which a zodiac sign was named. I ...

Hesperides: Encyclopedia II - Nyx - Other Greek texts

Night is also the first principle in the opening chorus of Aristophanes's Birds, which may be Orphic in inspiration. Here she is also the mother of Eros. In other texts she may be the mother of Charon (with Erebus), and Phthonus "envy" (with Dionysus?). The theme of Night's cave or house, beyond the ocean (as in Hesiod) or somewhere at the edge of the cosmos (as in later Orphism) may be echoed in the philosophical poem of Parmenides. The classical scholar Walter Burkert has speculated that the house of the goddess to which the philosopher is transported is the palace of Night; this hy ...

Hesperides: Encyclopedia II - Nyx - Cults of Night

In Greece, Night is only rarely the recipient of cult. According to Pausanias, she had an oracle on the acropolis at Megara (Paus. 1.40.1). More often, Nyx lurks in the background of other cults. Thus there was a statue called Night in the temple of Artemis at Ephesus. The Spartans had a cult of Sleep and Death, conceived of as twins (Paus. 3.18.1) - no doubt with Night as their mother. Cult titles composed of compounds of nyx- are attested for several gods, most notably Dionysus Nyktelios "nocturnal" (Paus. 1.40.6) and Aphrodite Philopannyx "who lo ...

Hesperides: Encyclopedia II - Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact - Lost continents flying saucers and La Merika

The 19th century saw the spread of several "lost continent" theories such as the Atlantis of Rosicrucians and Theosophists, and James Churchward's proposals of Mu and Lemuria. In the 20th century, extra-terrestrial civilizations have been added to the long list of conjectural visitors to the Americas. According to popular writers like Erich von Däniken, these celestial visitors were the real builders ...

Hesperides: Encyclopedia II - Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact - Claims based on cultural and biological similarities

Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact - Polynesians. The realization that Polynesians had been able to spread as far as Easter Island by boat led to theories of trans-Pacific contacts with Oceania. The presence in Polynesia of the kumara (sweet potato), a plant native to the Americas, has been cited as possible evidence of contacts. Over the last 20 years, the dates and anatomical features of human remains found in Mexico and South America have led some archaeologists to propose that those regions wer ...

Hesperides: Encyclopedia II - Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact - Late contacts

There are many historically-based claims of trans-oceanic contacts in the 15th century — before Columbus, but too late to have had any influence on the development of the New World civilizations. Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact - Zheng He. The achievements of Chinese navigation have been widely known in the West at least since the work of Joseph Needham and John King Fairbank in the 1950s. Gavin Menzies, in his book 1421: The Year China Discovered The World, popularized the further and highly ...

While most claims of trans-oceanic contact are about non-Americans traveling to the Americas, there are a few reports of trips in the other direction Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact - Caecilius Metellus. Pomponius Mela (Lib.III,Chap.5) writes, and is copied by Pliny the Elder, that Quintus Caecilius Metellus Celer, proconsul in Gaul received 'several Indians' (Indi) as a present from a Germanic king. The Indians were driven by a storm to the coasts of Germania (in tempestatem ex Indicis aequo ...

Hesperides: Encyclopedia II - Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact - The Vikings in Newfoundland

The case of the Viking trips to North America stands out as being fairly well supported by both historical and archaeological evidence. The so-called Vinland sagas of Icelandic and Norse literature tell of travels by Leif Ericson and other Vikings, around the year 1000, to a land called Vinland to the west of Greenland. The speculation that Vinland may have been North America has been fairly popular since the 19th century, and was even accepted as fact on some countries. The shipbuilding and navigational skills of the Viking were well-known, and any ...

Hesperides: Encyclopedia II - Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact - Feasibilty of trans-oceanic travels

The isolationist "dogma" was particularly weakened by the realization that pre-Columbian trans-oceanic voyages were technically quite possible. After all, the only essential requirements for a successful trans-oceanic trip are a boat that can withstand the open ocean weather for a few months, and means to store or obtain enough food and water to keep the crew alive for that duration. The historical and experimental evidence gathered over the last few decades shows that these ...

Hesperides: Encyclopedia II - Opera seria - Structure

Opera seria built upon the strict dramma per musica ('drama through music') conventions of the High Baroque era by developing and exploiting the da capo aria, with its A-B-A form. The first section presented a theme, the second a complementary one, and the third a repeat of the first with ornamentation and elaboration of the music by the singer. A typical opera would start with an instrumental overture of three movements (fast-slow-fast) and then a series of recitatives containing dialogue interspersed with arias ...

Hesperides: Encyclopedia II - Opera seria - Metastasio

More than anyone else's, the dramatic conventions expressed by the librettos of Metastasio crystallized the format of opera seria. In 1722 Pietro Trapassi, called Metastasio, a brilliant and personable young poet, was called upon to supply a libretto as part of the festivities for the Empress of Austria's birthday. The piece was termed a 'serenata' (literally an 'evening's entertainment') but it was less like what we would recognize as a musical serenade and more in the tradition of the court masque. It was titled Gli Orti Esperidi ...
