HERBOLOGY

Also known as HERBALISM, is found in practically all the ancient cultures throughout the world, and utilizes plants and trees, and their derivatives for preventative and curative medicine.

It is recognized that herbs constitute the oldest form of healing therapy that we know of. The Whole Herb retains the subtler ingredients and energies necessary to balance the active elements, while transporting the balanced substances into the body, which can be a healing catalyst so effectively.

Herbs are prepared for internal and external use in various ways, including teas, tinctures, extracts, oils, ointments and compresses. Herbal therapy is used to strengthen the immune system, and heal the body naturally.

Herbology is the art of combining medicinal herbs. Herbology is traditionally one of the more important modalities utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Ayurveda and Herbal Medicine

Today, you may think in this technologically advanced society, (as I sit by my computer writing this, and you sit by yours reading it) there are a whole range of patented chemical drugs tailored for all ailments, so why use herbal medicines?

Herbs are as effective for healing today as they were in our grandmothers' day, and for thousands of years before that. We may live in a very different world today but the human body hasn't changed, in fact it's often struggling to cope with ifs new modern environment.

Organic Gardening

What has organic gardening to do with spiritual healing? Allow me a few moments of your time and I shall tell you. A centre such as we are developing will be a place of tranquillity, comfort and revival, both spiritual and physical. I suppose this could be achieved without the benefit of nature on the doorstep but nature itself is a healer, and can offer so much to the troubled spirit. Let us take a stroll through a year in the garden of our healing centre, where visitors will be encouraged to enjoy their surroundings as much, or as little, as they so desire.

nutritional herbology: Form of herbology expounded by author and research chemist Mark Pedersen. It is part of the educational basis of Nature's Sunshine Products, Inc. (NSP), a multilevel marketing organization whose headquarters are in Spanish Fork, Utah. Nutritional herbology theory encompasses the ancient Chinese theory of the Five Elements.

Planetary Herbology (Planetary Herbalism): Integrative system of herbalism forged by Michael Tierra, C.A., N.D., O.M.D., author of the bestseller The Way of Herbs and Planetary Herbology. Tierra dedicated the latter book to all green, growing, flowering ones of this beautiful planet, who embody the universal creative healing energy. In it, he describes herbs partly in terms of energetics and which acupuncture meridian pathways the herbs affect.

Energetics is based on the concepts of:

(a)   energies - e.g., heating, cooling, slightly warm, and neutral; and

(b)  flavors (tastes) - e.g., bland (mildly sweet) and salty.

These concepts stem from TCM and Ayurveda (specifically, tridosha), respectively.

NATIVE AMERICAN HERBOLOGY: Native American healers and spiritual leaders seldom travel far form their homes and even more infrequently publicize their work--it is not the way. However, there is a body of knowledge about the herbal treatments used by various Native People. Much of the information has been tested and incorporated into our present herbal therapies.

History of Herbs

The traditional definition of an herb is a non-woody plant that dies down to the ground after flowering. However, "herb" is often used to describe any plant of which any part is used for medical treatment or nutritional value. In this sense of the word, herbs have been used and studied since prehistoric mankind. Five thousand years ago, the Sumerians kept the first written record of the use of herbs. In 2700 B.C., the Chinese wrote an herb book listing over 365 medicinal plants and their uses. Herbs are mentioned in the Old Testament, and the medicinal practices of ancient Greeks and Romans rose from herbalism.

The first European book on herbs dates from the first century A.D. It refers to more than 500 plants and remained an authoritative reference into the 1600s. During the Middle Ages, the Christian church discouraged the practice of medicine. Herbalism was preserved in monasteries, by monks hand-copying manuscripts of herbs, and planting their own herb gardens.

In the 17th century, the introduction of active chemical drugs and the development of chemistry led to the decline of herbalism, although folk medicine still existed in the home and small villages. By the end of the 19th and into the 20th centuries, orthodox medicine had pushed homeopathic medicine further from the mainstream.

Herbalists today seek to help people build their health with natural sources. The philosophy is that the body is capable of healing itself given the proper conditions. Herbalism, psychic healing, acupuncture, aromatherapy, touch therapy, and massage therapy can all work with orthodox treatments to create a healthy body.
