HELLEBORE

According to Pliny, an increaser of intelligence, but latterly used in treatment of the mentally ill. The poisonous root of this strange weed is also an extreme purgative, heart stimulant and insecticide. It has various old world and new world names: Christmas rose, stinking hellebore, American false hellebore, Indian Poke and Itch Weed.

UNGUENTI SABBATI: Flying ointment usually prepared with the darker herbs/worts of a specific narcotic nature (Hellebore, Hemp, Henbane) -- can be dangerous and deadly if used unsupervised.

baneful: Baneful herbs are poisonous. Such herbs - including henbane, hemlock, hellebore, mandrake and datura - were popular in Renaissance magic for inducing visions, creating the illusion of psychic awareness, drawing love, tormenting the mind and even dulling the pain of those about to be executed for the “crime” of magic.
