Heart - Heartbeat: Encyclopedia II - Heart - Diseases and treatments
The study of diseases of the heart is known as cardiology. Important diseases of the heart include: Coronary heart disease is the lack of oxygen supply to the heart muscle; it can cause severe pain and discomfort known as Angina. A heart attack occurs when heart muscle cells die because blood circulation to a part of the heart is interrupted. Congestive heart failure is the gradual loss of pumping power of the heart. Endocarditis and myocarditis are inflammations of the heart. Cardiac arrhythmia is an irregularity in the heartbeat. It is sometimes treated by implanting an artificial pa ...

Heart - Heartbeat: Signs Of Death

It is very difficult to find out the real signs of death. Stoppage of the heart-beat, stoppage of the pulse or breathing are not the actual signs of death. Stoppage of the heartbeats, pulse and respiration, cadaveric rigidity of the limbs, clammy sweat on the body, absence of warmth of the body, are the popular signs of death. The doctor tries to find out whether there is corneal reflex in the eye. He tries to bend the leg. These signs are not the real signs of death, because there have been several cases where there were cessation of breathing and beating of heart and yet they were revived after some time.

The death and dying and the life after death has always fascinated man. This is an excerpt from the book What Becomes Of The Soul After Death by Sri Swami Sivananda.

Heart - Heartbeat: Poetry For and About Indigos - Girl Indigo

Girl Indigo

Shattered glass sparkles

through a broken window

refracting reflections

into backlit hallways

deep, deep inside, flashing

strophic light, then dark.

A figure, a shape moves

into and out of shadow

a child, a woman reverberates

in silhouette.

Broken nail, broken heart

her hair, dyed jet black, fades

in heartbeats and tears.

She is here, she is now

screaming forever.

Dimensionless and expanding

beyond the edge of visible light

she hovers in her own luminescence

untouchable, yet yearning an embrace

Beyond a grasp, colors fail

pastels wither and crimsons bleed

into neutral shades of gray

as she absorbs the sun

into her deepest indigo.

Heart - Heartbeat: Metta Bhavna For Good Health

Metta Bhavna is a Pali word meaning meditation of loving kindness. The Buddha taught this meditation in Metta Sutta to 500 monks to cure them of their ailments and to protect them from evil spirits.

Metta Bhavna is also practised to purify our mind of defilements like anger, jealousy, hatred and self-pity. We cannot stop the suffering of the world. We can only stop it in our mind, because we know our minds and we generate anger, hatred, and jealousy in our own mind. The only way we can still our minds is by practising Metta Bhavna.

In medicine (obstetrics) cardiotocography (CTG) is a technical means of recording (-graphy) the fetal heartbeat (cardio-) and the uterine contractions (-toco-) during childbirth. CTG can be used to identify signs of fetal distress. Recordings are done by two separate electrodes, one for the measurement of the fetal pulse and a second one for the contractions. External measurement means taping or strapping the electrodes to the abdominal wall, with the heart electrode overlying th ...

Heart - Heartbeat: Encyclopedia - Cardiac arrhythmia

Cardiac arrhythmia is a group of conditions in which the muscle contraction of the heart is irregular or is faster or slower than normal. Cardiac dysrhythmia is technically more correct, as arrhythmia would imply that there is "no rhythm," but this term is not used frequently. Some arrhythmias are life-threatening medical emergencies that can cause cardiac arrest and sudden death. Others cause aggravating symptoms, such as an awareness of the heart beat palpitation that can be annoying. Some are quite benign and normal. ...

Heart - Heartbeat: Encyclopedia - Congestive heart failure

Congestive heart failure (CHF) (also called congestive cardiac failure and heart failure) is the inability of the heart to pump a sufficient amount of blood throughout the body, or requiring elevated filling pressures in order to pump effectively. CHF is an abnormal cardiac condition that reflects impaired cardiac pumping and blood flow. The pooling of blood leads to congestion in body tissue. The term heart failure is frequently misused, especially when given as cause of death: it is not syno ...

Heart - Heartbeat: Encyclopedia - Vasovagal syncope

Vasovagal syncope (also vasodepressor syncope, neurally mediated syncope or neurocardiogenic syncope), a form of dysautonomia, is the most common cause of fainting ("syncope" in medical terminology). Although it is particularly common (both historically and stereotypically) among young women, it is seen across all ages and genders and in otherwise completely healthy people. Heart - Heartbeat: Encyclopedia - North York Moors

North York Moors National Park is a National Park in the north of England. Its size is 1,436 km2 (554 square miles), and it is one of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the United Kingdom. 83% of the Park's area is in private ownership. The area is very well defined; on three sides rampart-like escarpments rise up from the flat Yorkshire countryside, whilst the fourth (eastern) side is a cliff-edged coast. Many visitors to the moors are engaged in outdoor pursuits, particularly walking; the parks h ...

Heart - Heartbeat: Encyclopedia - Brain death

Brain death is defined as a complete and irreversible cessation of brain activity. Absence of apparent brain function is not enough. Evidence of irreversibility is also required. Brain-death is often confused with the state of vegetation. Traditionally, death has been defined as the cessation of all body functions, including respiration and heartbeat. Since it became possible to revive some people after a period without respiration, heartbeat, or other visible signs of life, as well as to maintain respiration and blood f ...

Heart - Heartbeat: Encyclopedia - Cardiac arrest

A cardiac arrest is the cessation of normal circulation of the blood due to failure of the ventricles of the heart to contract effectively during systole. The resulting lack of blood supply results in cell death from oxygen starvation. Cerebral hypoxia, or lack of oxygen supply to the brain, causes victims to lose consciousness and stop breathing. Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that, if left untreated, invariably leads to death within seconds to minutes. The primary first-aid treatment for cardiac arrest is cardiopulm ...

Heart - Heartbeat: Encyclopedia - Nervous system

The nervous system of an animal coordinates the activity of the muscles, monitors the organs, constructs and processes input from the senses, and initiates actions. Prominent participants in a nervous system include neurons and nerves which play roles in such coordination. In animals without brains, the nervous system does not generate or conduct thoughts and emotions. Thus it is the system that animates "animals" (sponges are an exception). Chemicals that target the activity of nerves generally are the most rapidly act ...

Heart - Heartbeat: Encyclopedia II - Cardiac arrhythmia - Diagnosis

Cardiac dysrhythmias are often first detected by simple but nonspecific means: auscultation of the heartbeat with a stethoscope, or feeling for peripheral pulses. These cannot usually diagnose specific dysrhythmias, but can give a general indication of the heart rate and whether it is regular or irregular. Not all the electrical impulses of the heart produce audible or palpable beats; in many cardiac arrhythmias, the premature or abnormal beats do not produce an effective pumpin ...
