Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Hat-trick - Cricket

A hat-trick occurs in cricket when a bowler dismisses three batsmen with consecutive deliveries. The deliveries may be interrupted by an over bowled by another bowler from the other end of the pitch or the other team's innings, but must be three consecutive deliveries by the individual bowler. Only wickets attributed to the bowler count; i.e., run outs do not contribute to a hat-trick. Hat tricks are very rare and as such are highly treasured by bowlers. The term was first used to describe H.H. Stephenson's feat in 1858See also:

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia - Bodies

For the usual meaning of this term, see body. Bodies is a 2004 medical drama from BBC3 based on the book Bodies by Jed Mercurio. The series is the channel's attempt to break into hour long dramas, with its most successful shows to date being half-hour comedies (Little Britain, etc.). The series was also broadcast to American audiences on digital channel BBC America during the late Summer, early Fall of 2005. The drama has been described as a "dark, sometimes funny" take on the favourite genre made popular through shows s ...

Alternative comedy is a style of comedy that originated in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s and 1980s which would eventually go on to become mainstream in the 1990s and up to the present day. Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Hat-trick - Football soccer

A hat-trick occurs in football when a player scores three goals in a single game. In most professional games the scorer of the hat-trick is allowed to return home with the match ball as a souvenir. Some regard a "true", or "perfect" hat-trick as one where the player scores with both feet and their head in the same match (or less commonly by a header, leg shot, and penalty or free kick), though this is obviously very rare. The most common definition of a "true" hat-trick is where a player scores three goals in the same half of t ...

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Hat-trick - Hockey

In both field hockey and ice hockey a hat-trick is when a player scores three goals in a single game. The term was brought to ice hockey in the 1940s when Sammy Taft, a Toronto hatter, gave free hats to Maple Leafs players who scored three goals in a game. It is not certain whether he picked up this practice from cricket. If a member of the home team in ice hockey scores a hat-trick, fans acknowledge it by throwing their own hats from the stands onto the ice, often causing a delay in play. In the mid-1990s, Florida Panthers fans celeb ...

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Father Ted - Synopsis

Three priests preside over an island parish: Father Ted Crilly, Father Dougal McGuire and Father Jack Hackett. The three live together in Craggy Island's parochial house, along with their manic housekeeper Mrs Doyle (Pauline McLynn), who is hell-bent on serving tea to all and sundry. Responsible for the three priests' exile is fierce, uncompromising Bishop Len Brennan (Jim Norton). Bishop Brennan makes frequent visits to the island, often to cast his disapproving eye over the three and their backwater parish. The reasons for the priests' exile are only hinted at, but appear to stem from a mixture of ...

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Alternative comedy - Definition

Alternative comedy relied not on punchline-based jokes, like traditional comedians. Instead a typical alternative comedian might rely on one, all or a selection of the following: Observational humour: Making humour out of everday occurrences, and also laughing at one's own foibles and weakenesses (traditional comedians laughed at other people, such as ethnic minorities or "the mother-in-law", while alternative comedians laughed at themselves, their situation, and at the human condition). Political satire: ...

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Have I Got News For You - Format

HIGNFY began on BBC Two on September 28, 1990 and transferred to BBC One in October 2000. Two series of around eight episodes are made each year. Over an hour's worth of the show is recorded for each 30-minute programme on Thursday evenings for broadcast on Friday, allowing the show to remain topical, while the BBC's lawyers have time to request cuts of potentially libellous material. The regulars have commented that if a guest says anything funny, it is usual ...

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Have I Got News For You - Controversy and litigation

When Paula Yates appeared on the program in October 1995, she feigned outrage and offence at Hislop's verbal jabs about her being married to Michael Hutchence, whom he accused of "beating up journalists", and the alleged poor quality of her autobiography, and Merton's and the host's script's jokes concerning her breast enlargement surgery. Yates eventually called Hislop the "sperm of the devil" (she presumably meant "spawn of the devil"), an outburst that earned her more derision. (Including Ian Hislop saying, "Even your insults emanate from ...

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Alternative comedy - Criticism

Many people are critical of alternative comedy and there is a strong generational divide between those who like and dislike it. Older people in particular find the swearing and no-holds-barred nature of alternative comedy to be offensive. In the early days of alternative comedy, a frequent criticism was that nobody found a person standing on a stage simply discussing events in his or her life particularly funny. There was a joke said at the time: "I'm an alternati ...

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Alternative comedy - History

Alternative comedy was a product of its time. In the early 1980s Britain was a politically divisive country, although also had a nihilistic streak running through its core. Margaret Thatcher had come to power and was pushing forward free trade reforms but many still believed that Britain would one day be a socialist country. Punk rock had just come and gone in the late 1970s and Britain was changing forever in ways few people understood. From ...

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Alternative comedy - Transition to mainstream

Spurred on by the actions of up coming television producers, such as Paul Jackson, Geoffrey Perkins and Jimmy Mulville (see also Hat Trick Productions), alternative comedy spilled onto TV in the 80s. It was supported by minority channel BBC 2 in the form of The Young Ones and other sitcoms. These were seen as cult programmes, although there was some mainstream success for shows like Not The Nine O'Clock News and French & Sau ...

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Alternative comedy - Modern alternative comedy

It's debatable whether alternative comedy still exists. Comedians have always been averse to describing themselves as alternative, even during the era's hay day. Comedians like Mark Thomas, Mark Steel and Jeremy Hardy still perform stand-up with a hard political and intellectual edge but their isolation makes them conspicuous, and they're far from being household names. Few of the original alternative comedians appear on stage any longer, least of all performing stand-up comedy. Ben Elton, arguably the epitome of an alternative comedy for much of the 1980s, now considers him ...

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Father Ted - Major Characters

Father Ted Crilly (Dermot Morgan) is the most normal of the priests on the island. He is a bon vivant, exiled to Craggy Island for something referred to only as "That Lourdes Thing." This apparently involved him misappropriating church funds which were intended to be used to send a poor child to Lourdes to go on a gambling trip to Las Vegas. Ted has frequently claimed that the money was "just resting in my account", although Dougal points out "it was there for a very long time Ted... A good long rest". Ted was previously in We ...

Hat Trick Productions: Encyclopedia II - Father Ted - Production details

Contrary to frequent rumours, Mathews and Linehan did not originally pitch the series to the Irish network RTÉ, but rather offered it directly to Hat Trick Productions and Channel 4 in the UK. Nevertheless, it is a rich irony that what went on to be one of the most popular TV shows in Ireland, performed largely by an Irish cast, and containing so many accurate (albeit comically exaggerated) depictions of national Irish eccentricities, was paid for and shot by a British broadcaster. Somewhat controversially, RTÉ initially did not buy the ri ...
