Some Jewish historians have recounted that the word Poland is pronounced as Polania or Polin in Hebrew, and as transliterated into Hebrew, these names for Poland were interpreted as "good omens" because Polania can be broken down into three Hebrew words: po ("here"), lan ("dwells"), ya ("God"), and Polin into two words of: po ("here") lin ("[you should] dwell"). | | | | Hasidic Judaism: Encyclopedia II - Rebbe - Distinction of rebbe and ravA rebbe is distinct from a 'rav' (a word usually translated as Rabbi, who is a leader of an Orthodox Jewish community, either hasidic or non-hasidic) in that a rebbe need have no scholarly attainments, and as such is not necessarily qualified to pasken halakha (decide points of Jewish law). It is not uncommon for a Hasidic Jew to have a rebbe and to go to a rav for a ruling on an issue of religious law. Interestingly, there has been a female rebbe, the 'Mai ...

| | | | Hasidic Judaism: Encyclopedia II - Israel ben Eliezer - Elements of Besht's doctrinesThe foundation-stone of Hasidism as laid by Besht is a strongly marked panentheistic conception of God. He declared the whole universe, mind and matter, to be a manifestation of the Divine Being; that this manifestation is not an emanation from God, as is the conception of the Kabbalah, for nothing can be separated from God: all things are rather forms in which God reveals Himself. When man speaks, said Besht, he should remember that his speech is an element of life, and that life itself is a manifestation of God. Even evil exists in God. Th ...

| | | | Hasidic Judaism: Encyclopedia II - Israel ben Eliezer - Influence on HasidismThe later developments of Hasidism are unintelligible without consideration of Besht's opinion concerning man's proper relation with the universe. True worship of God, as above explained, consists in, the cleaving to, and the unification with, God. To use his own words, "the ideal of man is to be a revelation himself, clearly to recognize himself as a manifestation of God." Mysticism, he said, is not the Kabbalah, which everyone may learn; but that sense of true oneness, which is usually as strange, unintelligible, and incomprehensible to ma ...

| | | | Hasidic Judaism: Encyclopedia II - History of the Jews in Poland - Jews of Poland within the Russian Empire 1795–1918Official Russian policy would eventually prove to be substantially harsher to the Jews than that under independent Polish rule. The lands that had once been Poland were to remain the home of many Jews, as, in 1772, Catherine II, the tzarina of Russia, instituted the Pale of Settlement, restricting Jews to the western parts of the empire, which would eventually include much of Poland, although it excluded some areas in which Jews had previously lived. By the late 1800s, over four million Jews would live in the Pale.
Initially, R ...

| | | | Hasidic Judaism: Encyclopedia II - Rebbe - Kvitlach and tishTo date there are generally - although there are quite some exceptions - two main characteristics that mark a rabbi as a rebbe. One is reading "kvitlach" (Yiddish, "notes"). A kvittle is a note with names and short requests for which the rebbe to pray. Hasidim believe that rebbes read supernaturally "between the lines" of a kvittle and in every Hasidic sect numerous anecdotes always circulated of how the rebbe saw things that were not written in the kvittle. The kvittle is usually written by the rebbe's "gabbai" (secretary). Usually, but with exceptions, a "pidyon" (redemption) of cash is handed to the rebbe under the kvitt ...

Jews also played a role in the fight for independence in 1918, some joining Józef Piłsudski, while many other communities decided to remain neutral in the fight for a Polish state. In the wake of World War I and the ensuing conflicts that engulfed Eastern Europe — the Russian Civil War, Polish-Ukrainian War, and Polish-Soviet War — many pogroms were launched against the Jews by all sides. As a substantial number of Jews were perceived to have supported the Bolsheviks in Russia ...
